okay, here's the problem

when I try to skin my model , i get something like the picture below, real ugly.
But when I try it on a simple box with a couple of bones in it, i don't have the slightest problems..

What could be the cause of this error?

Your model is probably very small. Try rescaling it (use the Utility "Rescale World Units")

I wish it were that easy, it was the first thing that jumped to my mind, but it didn't help

any other suggestions? normals, holes in the model?

Reset Xform, Collapse, re-apply Skin modifier.

Had this problem once, too :/
Luckily you can still adjust the envelopes via Keyboard etc. but itīs very annoying.

It looks like the scaling problem is in the bones, not the mesh. Try resetting the scale on the bones and see what happens.

Yeah, bone scale.

If that doesn't do it, or even if it does, go and get Grant Adams skin scripts. He lets you scale multiple envelopes at the same time. Very helpful. Three skin scripts there.

problem is, when I scale the envelopes in one direction, that direction is correct, but another direction is way too small then

gonna check those scripts asap

thnx for the help guys

LFShade has the right idea I think. Check your bones for non-uniform scale.

A quick way I check bones for non-u scale is by using the FBX exporter. It pops up an error telling me which bones are bad.

thank god for backups. I tried it on one of my older files, the ones which didn't have IK in it, and it worked flawlessly. Man, that was such a relief...

Anyhow, thnx for the help you guys

okay, can't find the solution to this problem, max corrupted all of my backups, I put my file online , if someone could take a look at it, it would be really appreciated.

Reset Xform, Collapse, add Skin modifier.

Hmmm, thought I heard this somewhere before. :)

[edit] Oops, I realise I didn't install your Attribute script. That may be what's causing the problem. Without it, the Reset Xform works fine.

and after you have done that, the envelops work flawlessly?

[edit] thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you

Yep.

Using 3ds max 5.1

[edit] Ummm, I mean I never installed your .ms but I was able to Reset Xform and the new Skin's envelopes intialized fine.
