View Full Version : WIP: Autumn Unicorn
howlinghorse 10-06-2007, 12:08 PM This is for a challenge on DA and I'm a little stuck.
The idea: Palomino unicorn running through a shallow river stream in a forest at sunset. Pretty simple concept!
This is the sketch...

I want to get it super-photo-realistic and detailed type thing. Think reflection, leaves, water etc.
Well... back to photoshop!

Update... still not really 'feeling' it. Think the composition needs changing. There's too much negative pull to the right, and the unicorn doesn't pop out at all.

My poke at it.
Dark vs light contrast, one of the best eyepoppers there is, make the horse the main dark entity and BAM he's the center of attention.
Composition is easier in BW values.
Things I changed:
-tilted the head up for a more readable silhouette
-changed the height of the canvas to 500, so I could place the head of the horse on a third without clipping. This adds a lot of focus on the head.
-added splashes, instead of the wrinkles, he's running right?

Thanks for your input! ...That rocks. The composition looks so much better.

Putting the splashes round him makes him stand out much more nicely.
I have to stop the colours being so strong, somehow, I think it looks more like a forest fire than a nice autumn sunset!

I really like the concept and the colors you've got going so far. What bothers me about it is the horse's front-most leg, it's sort of in an odd position visually i think and kind of leads my eye off the page and centered around it.
Mayber it would help if you bring some of that darker tree line background down around it instead of having it light colored there? Lessen the contrast around that leg so your eye goes elsewhere?

Got a few more greens in, and done some general detailing while I think about where to go with it next.

I'm not sure about that leg... anatomy wise I'm ok with it, for the moment, and I'd rather it stay prominent as its really the main feature of the equine and seems to help the perspective a lot (I tried changing it a few times but the horse didn't come out of the page so well, I felt)
I know what you mean though - it leads your eye away... though that to me helps the movement of the horse, it is distracting. Maybe if I add something to the right? Hmm...

It looks very good so far although I agree about the leg issue. Adding something on the right would indeed help to keep the eye into the picture :)
Great colors!

I am wondering, though, if it is required to be an autumn sunset, as you mentioned. Would a different season help resolve some of your concerns? Just a thought.
Also, the body seems a bit thick (to me) if this is to be a palimino variant.
I'm looking forward to the finished piece.

Dianae: Thank you! I do have an idea about what to put there...
colt51: Palomino's technically a colour (at least in the UK!) rather than a breed, so I'm calling this a palomino draft unicorn... hehe. Oh - and it does have to be autumn, though I think I may do a variant on each season next.

I knew that, but my mind was going in some wierd circles, since the only ones I've seen in person are all saddle horses...jusy a "brain-fart" from an "old fart".:scream: Also...too much coffee with not enough sleep and (Dianae will identify with this) nowhere near enough chocolate!:D (Working nights can really suck!)
