I'm about to make facial shapes, a la Osipa, and I'm confused about construction modes. My mesh is enveloped, and I have some facial bones, so do I create the shapes in secondary shape mode? How is this different than shape modeling mode? Is there anything I have to know concerning Osipa's methods when using XSI? Thanks a lot for helping a noob :D

If you use the Shape Manager (which I recommend) you might want to turn on Edit>Display with animation deformation.

As for the modes:
You should always be in shape modeling when creatiing shapes
if you have an envelope and you want to say, moves some points and create a shape from that, then you switch to Secondary Shape Mode to visualize the effect of the move point with the envelope. When you hit "Store Shape" it does the necessary calculations and stores the shape back in shape modeling mode, and removes the move components

Secondary Shape Mode is ONLY A VISUAL GUIDE to see the effect of tweaking a shape which has an envelope
