View Full Version : Displacement Maps
rusted_nut 04-08-2003, 05:16 AM Hi,
Is there any way to adjust the depth of a displacement map like you can with a bump map (bump depth attribute)? Right now I am doing a test using a procedural checker texture as a displacement map on a nurbs plane - the texure which is 100% black and white displaces the geometery so little it is barely visible - what am I missing?
Thanks

hey rusted nut!
....in order to control the depth of displacment, you need only edit the ALPHA GAIN in the file textures attribute editor (im assumin you are using a file texture.....)
anyway, i hope this helps, just knowing i have helped is my reward...
BTW.. if you have any other questions...you can get in touch with me during the day...

ahhh,
that makes sense, but I am using a procedural texture which does not have an alpha gain... perhaps I could render out the procedural texture (which has animated attributes) as a seqence of still images and map them as a displacement, hmmmm
thanks sedric, your the man!

You can play with the Alpha offset aswell, but for some really kickass fun go into the hypershade, into the utility section, and create this thing called...what's it called...ummm....shit.
It's this crazy utility that allows you to adjust displacement in real time in your viewport. It's in the online help. Look up 'displacement utility' and that should tell you what it's actually called.
