Hey guys. I have spent the last few weeks just watching these forums, trying to learn what I need to learn, but I am still stuck with this model. This is about my 3rd or 4th attempt at facial modeling.

The obvious: There is a texture issue on the neck, easy fix so it keeps getting put off. Also obvious, the ears or lack thereof and the obvious line down the middle, will be taken care once modeling is complete.

Having trouble with: I am terrible at 2d. This face texture is a combo of a photograph and a big fat rubber stamp. :) I need serious help learning to hand create a more photorealistic facial texture. Also, I cannot create and have not been able to find a good eye (Iris) texture so the eyes are not modeled yet.

I could really use the advise of the experts here. Modeling issues, texturing help, eye help, and anything else you can think of wouold really be appreciated.

Oh and don't be shy, after all, she can't hear a word you are saying. :)

eyes are too far apart and the nose is too wide. your getting there but the features are too far apart for the face.
doing faces is hard, reference material is essential, of different faces, and look at biology books for muscle and bone structure.
thats my 2p worth.

my best bit of advice in general is to finish the model to the level your happy with before applying textures. Its tempting to add them before finishing. The model has to be right.

I think the proportions are pretty good on this head-- it's wide enough and there's volume to the cheeks and jaw, which are some of the main problems most people wrestle with in the beginning. Just get those eyes closer together!! There should be 1 eye width of space between them, there's half again too much distance between them right now. After that, the top portion of the head could stand to be narrower-- one eye-width of space between the outside corner of the eyes and the side of the head.

If I'm not mistaken, you probably DO have a photo reference for your the profile of the head, don't you? It's tilted forward, making her forehead look really bulgy. If you draw a line straight down the screen from the foremost part of the brow, it should be very close to the foremost part of the chin. Her whole face needs to be ROTATED a little in relation to the rest of her skull, if that makes sense.

If you are using photo reference, you might want to take a look at this page I wrote (http://www.logrhythms.com/Leah/tuts/BHhome.html) for some tips.

You are correct, I did use reference shots for this model. They are the shots of Sandra Bullock from fineart.sk

What can I tell ya? Sandra has a mal-formed head. :) If you measure off of the reference shot, her eyes are more than one eye apart. More like one and a quarter. While my eyes are a bit wider due to the mirror modifier, bringing them to one eye width apart, gives them a really un-natural look.

You are also correct about the nose, it IS too wide so I need to narrow it up some. And I do need to tilt the face back on the head as the side ref was tilted forward. Also of course I will need to redo the texture which is very bad news because even as mediocre as this texture is, its the best one I have come up with, and it was mostly by luck I am starting to think.

I will get back with updates as soon as possible.

Any other questions/comments/or suggestions out there?

Ok. I took my texture off due to some pretty big changes to the mesh. I found a proportions tip on one of the other WIP posts and have nearly perfect proportion measurements. I know that most people say there should be one eye width between the eyes but after measuring several model shots, I find that it varies and hardly ever did I find a person with one eye width or less so my model is about 1 1/4 eye width between.

I really need help now in determining if the mesh is good because I have an itch to start on the texture (not doing ears yet, not up to the challenge).

So please, let it all out. Gimme all of your criticisms and suggestions. Thanks in advance.

that last render looks like a male head, i think you should smooth the cheeks, give the jaw a little better definition and the nose looks pretty masculine.

I think the majority of the problem is the lack of texture. Majority of the features in the first render are exactly the same as in the last render. The jawline is very defined, in-fact it is exaggerated in comparison to most meshes. This model is based up two actresses with very strong jawlines. (Sandra Bullock and Claire Forlani) Also, Claire Forlani has very noteable cheekbones. Her cheek bones are very strong leaving the cheeks below inset quite a bit. I love this feature and that is why I modeled the cheeks this way. When texture with makeup is applied, I am sure it will pay off.

I did however feel that the brow was a bit thick, so I made it more angular. Also, the nose was rather large. It fit perfectly on the Sandra ref pics, but still didn't look natural so I thinned out the nose some.

Keep the comments coming please.
