Sorry for doubling up, I've posted this in the general maya section as well.

Hi, I'm having a problem with smooth skinning a referenced mesh. As soon as I apply Bind Smooth Skin, the mesh turns to wireframe in the viewport and also refuses to render. Anyone shed any light on why this might be happening?

For some reason, whenever you apply any deformations to a referenced mesh, the Shader Group is disconnected from the mesh. This hapens whether it's a non-linear deformer, a blendShape, a cluster, skinning, whatever. What you get with no Shading Group (material) applied? Wireframe objects that don't render cuz there's no material to render.

The solution I've used is to find the appropriate Material for the mesh in the hypershade and re-apply it to the mesh. That should do it. At least that's my experience.
