View Full Version : 10.5 new serial numbers again?
v-empire 10-04-2007, 01:59 PM Hi,
I just received 10.5 and found a new temp serial number.
Does anybody know if this means a new basic serial number,
so the whole relicensing process with all the plugins begins again
like in the 10.0 Update?
This would be Horror, I remember how long it took me to get a new serial for stormtracer after 10.0.
Thanks
Holger

no. if you look in the registration dialog 10.5 is a new registration on top of 10 in exactly the same way 9.5 was an additional registration to 9 (so no plug-ins should be affected).

Puuuuh, that was close
Thanks

Like with 8.5 and 9.5 the basic CINEMA 4D serial number remains the same. As Simon pointed out a new .5 number is needed that works similar to the number of a module.

Why does Maxon send a temporary serial number to a customer who buys from them directly? It means I have to remember to re-contact Maxon to get the 'real' number. And I forget. And then my v10.5 expires, like it did sometime before today (I've not been working for a while due to holiday cheer) and then I'm locked out of my paid-in-full product. It sucks. Yes, I emailed maxon_us and yes, they will get me the 'keeper' number fairly quickly. But why the extra dance step?

I always wondered about that myself - but it sure beats dealing with dongles. :)

I guess. My six-year-old was just playing with my 'dongle string', that is about ten serial-port dongles attached in a row. I have another four or five attached to one computer or another.
But the question remains about a temp. serial number from Maxon when you buy from them. I don't get it.
What I did get was the super-prompt email response from Maxon with the new number.

Well, for single users this looks like it can be a pain in the ass. However, companies will purchase Cinema 4D and a lot of times, the person purchasing is not the one who will be using the program. So then what that would require is for the people who use it to be around in order to get it registered.
And while speaking about registering, giving the temp serial number is a sure fire way to get people to register their product (because if you don't you can't use it after 3 months!). This makes it possible to keep track of people who try to re-use serials and etc.
I personally don't think of it as such a big deal. I mean once you get your temp, you can immediately send it in to get it registered and have the permanents the same day.
CINEMA 4D and it's modules can be purchased from many different sources. The temporary serial numbers ensure that you can purchase a module or .5 upgrade from any of those without having to go through the process of identifying yourself and without any delay before you are able to use it with your already registered license.

I've never had this issue with MAXON. The only time I had to register for the final serial number was when I first bought C4D, R8.5. Ever since when upgrading I 've received the final numbers along with the disk. That's direct from MAXON UK.

Interesting. Maxon US makes me do the serial number square-dance. They were quick yesterday to get the final numbers to me, I'm just glad I went to use C4D on that day, a Friday, and not the following day--part of a long New Year's weekend. I might have been shut out of my product until next Wednesday.
At least the recent versions have the 'from clipboard' function which drasticly reduces the work of entering the list of temps and then the full list of perms.

if i remember correctly most people who phone maxon to register their products get the permanent serial number immediately - the delay only happens when you use other methods to contact them.

What about people who phone Maxon to buy their products? I call them, we talk, I read them my creditcard numbers, they send a box...with temp serials. Then I have to call or write or fax or email them back again to request perm. numbers, and if I forget, they let my product expire like its a surprise that I would want perm numbers.
I don't mean to make a big stink over this, just wondering why the extra step for Maxon-direct customers.

as bjorn said they deal with distributors and several maxon offices. Its the quickest easiest way to get all customers no matter what source a usable serial number immediately. The extra step imo has always been part of your installation you should contact maxon by phone when you get them.
Yes maxon themselves could be able to get you serials immediately, but it means an exception to the system and most companies function better when things are all done the same way.

I purchased my 10.5 upgrade (from 8.5) through NovEdge.com They contacted Maxon and Maxon provided me with my temp serials, via email, before my box was even shipped. I immediately registered them online and received my permanent serials via email 2 days later. So I was able to get my upgrades and/or serials for Splinepatch, FusionThing, Xfrog, StormTracer, Cactus Dan's and InterPoserPro, all before my C4D box arrived.
