View Full Version : Complementing 3d Packages?
negative9 04-08-2003, 01:33 AM Currently I have Softimage XSI, Maya PLE, Blender, AC3d, K3d, Milkshape, gmax, nendo, and Wings 3d installed on my computer - all for the purpose of learning 3d - I've spent the most time on Wings 3d - which I like the best, thus far.
All have thier strengths and weaknesses.
Milkshape was good to me because of Video tutorials by ISO; http://www.planetquake.com/polycount/cottages/blackboard/tutorials.htm
And Maya...well...A little daughting but http://www.digital-tutors.com/digital_tutors/maya/
...Collapsed the fear factor a little.
Now, here on the Wings3D forums most people seem to Complement thier Wings3d with Lightwave, the only one i've never played with!
My question breaks down like this, what is the best purposed complementing 3d package to use with Wings3D (I Need animation features)?
If Lightwave is the answer, can you point me to the best place for tutorials for it?
And as a complete side note, among the fourms I had read that a long term plan (beyond 1.0) might be to implement animation in Wings3d, can anyone verify or squash this notion?

I haven't heard about them implementing animation in Wings but if they do...I'll be permanently hooked on wings...hehe
also about complementing with lightwave...my guess is yes about animation and probably also about rendering....guessing remember...sorry if i'm wrong

Complementing Wings3d with animation would diffently put this program over the top.
Guess I start looking into Lightwave Discovery Ed.

Take a look at Kaydara motionbuilder , the freelancer edition is $100 which is the best del on the planet.
Also you can use Lightwave discovery , Maya PLE , XSI Exp or houdini apprentice , all of them import wings models just fine and you can save your files in them.
So there is no shortage of software out there that you can animate in.
Just a couple of things. Yes, Bjorn is planning to add animation (and I think morphs and fog and ?) to Wings AFTER version 1.
Don't hold your breath, version 1 is still a long way off, version 2? a lot longer.
I use Lightwave Discovery edition and it is excellent BUT, you can save models of up to 400 points per layer in modeller, you don't seem to be able to save in Layout at all, certainly not scene files. I haven't attempted animation with it but my guess would be that you'ld have to complete an animation in one session. Probably a tall order!

i wished wings3d would stay what it is - the best poly modeller i have ever used
extending wings3d with rendering, animation and all the other features a full blown up 3d solution needs will sooner or later make this a big pile of half-arsed features - especially considering the limited person power behind this project and the awkward programming language (at least pretty well unknown) it was written in
hopefully bjorn will keep this project focused
just my 2 cents of course

I totally agree!
I think it should stay as a modeller (one of the best and most intuitive) as it is.
That way you can stay focused in the modelling and you can master this aspect without having other things in your mind to distract you.
Mabe Wings should be developed as a modeler alone, letting other people develop exporters and plugins, keeping it easier to bjorn to finetune wings alone.
Sometimes is dificult enough to master all the aspects of the modeller even as friendly as wings is, so it would be even difficult to master other aspects as well, like animation, atmospheric effects and alike.
Environment effects should be included in the exporter plugins (as many times they are application specific) although I must aggree that including bones in wings would be a must! :D
This is just my oppinion and it might change of course, I'm not a "guru", a "know it all" and if I see I am wrong I have no problem in admitting it.
Wasn't it bill gates who said 640kb of memory would be enough? :P
Best regards.
This has been discussed (Actually, a few times IIRC) on the official development forum or on CGChat. There is nothing to worry about.
Even if at some point Wings starts to go in a direction you don't like the earlier versions are available at sourceforge :)

I'm using Wings side by side with my lightwave, even though lightwave is known for its modeling I'm using both for a faster workflow.
With regards to your question on the best place for tutorials there are tons in the web but try checking the newtek's site first
http://www.newtek.com/products/lightwave/tutorials/index.html
then http://members.shaw.ca/lightwavetutorials/Main_Menu.htm
and for more Q&A just hop in to the Cgtalk lightwave thread.

My perspective on animation in Wings 3d is this, the interface is extremely simple, and addictive. I'd like to stick with the same way of learning for animation, which the Wings way I feel would be best.
I'm not saying it should be the same program, but be the same program. For example, by your responces on complementing 3d programs, most (all) said Lightwave, So I picked a up Lightwave tutorial to see how it operates, and it has two modules, one for modeling and one for animation(rendering too i think), but the interface is the same!
WINGS DIFFERENCES WOULD BE:
Your Selection Icons would change to BONES, JOINTS, MOTION...or whatever. The Tell-tell directions at the botton of the screen would provide information on what you need to do next.
So you rig (create a skelleton) for your model, and if you need to see what is assigned to what you open up a WINDOW with the bones/objects ect.
After rigging your character, you begin animation with another WINDOW (or have the anim controls at the bottom) with the FRAME RATES ect...
I think it would be extremely effective and easy to come to grips with, and you'd have a common interface (right-click menus and such).

sure, i wish bjorn and whoever is behind this project would just replicate mirai's functionality - and give it away for free - but i fear that's wishful thinking
i think it will be hard enough to keep this the best poly modeller either - we are still missing a smooth smoothed or subdiv workflow (ala lightwave's tab key or maya's cps or real subdivs) - and plugins like slide don't integrate well into the workflow already (you can't take an edge selection and just slide it - you have to execute slide and then make your selection - what a mess)
