Anyone got any tips that can speed up rendering (that don't involve throwing money at the problem)? I was thinking of any of the more obvious general techniques as well as more specialised ones to make the thread useful to as many people as possible.

what area of rendering? ao? gi? raytracing? particles? etc etc. how about some specifics, then an idea of what you're currently doing in these specifics. that way we can look at your settings and help you optomise.

STRAT makes a good point. Without knowing what areas you are concerned with specifically it's hard to say what you can do. However, Per-Anders posted awhile ago on how to minimize bad renders and within it he went into great detail on how you can speed up a render (generally speaking) without having to buy anything ... Hope it helps you as much as it helped me:

Sorry to be so vague - I do have a project where the render times are greater than I thought but I have no way of making them quicker so that's why I asked (i posted on a similar subject recently but think my phrasing of the question was wrong).

The link is superb - I'll be printing that out and adjusting my scene accordingly. Thanks for that.

What I have is a walkthrough of a shop - it doesn't need to be a GI fest as it's for a technical guide. I wanted to know if there were tips for really speeding up renders on jobs like this, techniques for speeding the flow, with lights, textures etc whilst still maintaining reasonable quality.

yes. area lights and shadows drastically slow rendering. be clever with useage of them. (if at all. maybe use raytraced instread). reflections also slow rendering, try optomising these. also, good speed enhancements can be found by optomising your AA settings. maybe try a different filter or sample setting.
