Hi Cgtalkers. I've been working on a quick portrait in my spare time at work, however I've come to a bit of a art block. I'm not sure where to take the image... or if I should dump it and start something new.
Some feedback and suggestions for alterations/direction would be great! :D

ohhh is looking good! perhaps adding more hues to the skin (like blue) will help adding it more life and of course some hair :) .

Thanks for the comments VincereCaos. I'm not totally sure if this is working, but I've started moving the picture in this direction.

I'm thinking I need to do more work to the skin (still looks pastey), a bit more detail to the eyes and lips, and perhaps some variance to the background.

I reckon it's looking great so far, although you probably faded your contrast a little too much between hot and cold spots.
Playing with adding hues would sure be a good idea, although I think I would start defining more the specularity of the skin, like giving the forehead a more reflective touch maybe and also a few highlights here and there such as nose line and the definition and hues of the lips especially the lower one.

Hi

I actually quite like the skin effect, it looks like watercolor over inks. I also like the black area. In your shoes I'd call it done now and do another - if you overwork this I think it will lose some of it's spontenaity.

it is working! I agree with you on the skin it does look pastey. That muddy effect happens when you put the dark color next to the light color, I don't know if I'm making myself clear here but for example in her left cheek there should be a middle tone between that dark brown and the kind of orange tone, perhaps blending it more detailed will work. Anyway I think that muddy effect is only on the cheeks, other than that the pic is looking great!

looks great! i love the way it is compositioned now with nothing but the blackness in the back...it looks like she is coming out into the light! I would just work on refining her more as people have already suggested. Great job!
