View Full Version : Character :: SPY Flie (in progress)
Ryder 04-07-2003, 11:58 PM Hi everyone!
this is my first WIP here at CgTalk..
annyway..
here is the idea..
a cool "fisheye fly-around scene" with the fly with a "mini camera" atached , in a long corridor/air vent system, that ends up at Saddams/bush (some known persons) desk
not that much.. annyway.. a fun chapter in a future demo reel i think..

well... i will try to make the scene done, now that i got the time
actually im sick.. :thumbsdow

yo DA rydah!
I´ve said it before and say it again, for the record
A fine dandy model, with very fine dandy shading.
Looking forward to facettes in the eyes

Superb idea man.
Besides the "not yet" facetted eyes, I would add some bump on the wings, because it looks to clean at the moment.

Is it a CIA or FBI spy ? :p nice work, but the eyes are usualy faced on fly. I think it's missing... but it's not very important ^^

Superb!
Imho red eyes will do better and make the facettes smaller...
I hope you'll make an animation

There's no way that bug could fly like that. They're very balanced creatures, and something that heavy would throw it way off (it would probably hang upside down from it). A camera would have to be much smaller, with weight distributed about the body. A good chance to have wires everywhere. Right now it's just not believeable in any way. Your modeling is good, but the execution itself is poorly thought out.

timothyD - if i were a fly, i think i could fly with that... besides, the "inspector gadget" look of it seems a bit refreshing to me, IMO it's pretty standard to do the mech war things with wires running to parts unknown... this, to me, is a simple fly out to do some spywork. he wasn't raised by robots, he just had to make due with what he could find and put on.
i too liked the red in the eyes better, and would agree to the smaller facets...
looks great! keep it up!
hahaha thats really funny. i love the camera as it is. i'll be waiting eagerly for an animation!

*nod - nod*
infact a green flie (the big ones) can lift up to 20 times their weight...
and.. yes... i know they are well balanced creatures.
but i agree about the blance problem..
annyway this is not a Dead-serious-must-be-a-real-thing-project
http://etrusken.redbull.nu/bandet/media/jobbet/cgtalk/flie_blanced.jpg
this was just suposed to be a cool/funny animation :hmm: :hmm:
cheers!..
i just finished the rigging of it... (having a lite problems with expressions thou...)
later dudes!
yeah that's cool :D and i agree with doing the facets a little smaller...
this is good :D

Yeap, make the facettes smaller AND bring back the maroon velvet-ish look on the eye.
And maybe add bevels to the spy-cam  cos it looks very CG

Realy good job!
The eyes are well shadered, but you should make the hexagones smaller. And you could choose another color than black... Keep spy with a dark purple.
Right done for the camera and the fur render!
Don't forget to break the symetry during the animation. With a litlle random in the wings animation expression. And move the legs function to the direction.

is this better??
http://etrusken.redbull.nu/bandet/media/jobbet/cgtalk/flie_facette_RED.jpg
did some colour adjustment... and bevels to the camera
i will post some rigging/wires later on
anny ideas to improve the cam?

Here's my shot at a fly eye. No geometry all shader. Only standard max materials + scanline.
http://www.jayjun.com/flyeye.jpg
And since you need to take normal sized pictures with a camera this super duper small. Maybe you need a super wide-angled lens to go with it?? Looks more believable me thinks.
sorry for the low sampling on this one ...
http://www.jayjun.com/wideeye.jpg
much better eyes..but i still don´t like the color of the red button fix it...mångå..

too bad i dont got the 3dsMax Metal shader hehe (nice curve controll thou) but thouse metal shaders in max could be a problem..
if you got a nice GI and alot of lights... then the eye would shange colour and tint as it flies trough the room... (max)
Btw i´m an old max user. 4 years in max.. but i converted to Lw :)
about the cam, yes.. that was a good idea! i will try that out
i´m thinking of making the flie a little fater... is that a good idea you think?

I really liked your work.. It is good you are doing it with LW :)
The faceted eye is with procedurals, right?
Did you use any pixel filters like glow or something else?
Thx.
nja.. you could make it just a little fatter then.. not to much..

yes i used a Bump array for the bump and
a black fill (same as bump) to make the facettes more clear
no pixel filters used...
wow, great idea can't wait to see close-ups of people swatting at this fly. As for the camera being too heavy I came up with a theory... this is no ordinary fly. Obviously it was bred and gene spliced to be a "super" fly so it has no problems carrying that extra weight around. I hope your set won't be too extensive because from a fly's point of view you'll have to make all the little details...
Great work can't wait to see where this goes.

Asking too many questions :)
How far will you go with the automation? Will you use the expression for clever morphing or is it possible to make it walk thru expressions given the start and end locations?
Good job, keep it up man. :buttrock:

Well the only thing i will use morphing for, is the mouth (sucking device hehe : ) ) i wanted to use expressions for the head..
but i i got some problems with it... (i´ll skip that part.. :) )
BTW. does annyone got a good tip how to animate the wings.. (i think i will do it with motion mixer)
