Latest Update: Final Image: A Spot of Undersea Tea
10-03-2007, 07:45 AM
Hello all. This is the 1st of my concept sketches...the idea is sharks having a tea party.

More sketches and compositional exploration...
10-03-2007, 07:55 AM
I was considering incorporating a sea turtle as a table for the sharks....these are a couple more sketches.

Fantastic creature sketches, looks very promising. I especially like the fat shark on your latest image, shows a lot of character and gives it a very humorous edge. Good luck, I'm curious to see what comes next. :)

Here is the sketch for my final composition.
This is wonderful, I love the 'character' in this piece, very strong personality and gestures. Your final compositon is very well done, especially the triangle composition of sharks and how they are craddled by the background. I look forward to your progresses. Excellent start, and I wish you the best of productivity:thumbsup:

Black and white quick value study...

Thanks guys. :-) I've started on adding color to the image. This is what I've got so far. Later, I plan to add some coral/sea fauna and add some blood diffusing in the water (from the teapot).

Nice update! One suggestion - you may want to glaze just a wee bit of blue over the sharks with digital water to give them the appearance of being in the water. Good job!

 wow! very cool scene! the characters are well thought of :p
just a few ideas, while your adding the rest of the elements ..
- the part where light it penetrating through the water .. can you show school of fish? plus some rays of light ?

- since there's blood diffusing in the water, it's gonna attract more sharks .. how about a silhouette of them in the background? .. (not too big though :) )
hope this helps ya :p :bounce:
cheers! and good luck!

oh my gosh, this picture made me chuckle :D i love love love the expression on the saw fish! he's all 'oh thanks awfully for this cup of tea ol' chum! pip pip!"

Thanks to everyone for the great suggestions and encouraging comments. This is my latest version of the piece. Haven't added the blood in yet, but I've painted some more details.

Nice update Megan - you may want to nock back the jellyfish on the right just a bit and add some small silhouetted ones on the other side against the ship. Excellent work!
10-11-2007, 07:39 PM
Thanks everyone for the feedback.
Hiun--yes, that is a sunken ship in the background. I'm planning to lighten it a bit to push it further in the background and make it less overpowering in the image.
nwiz25, thank you for the feedback and the reference photos.
SideAche--thanks again for the suggestions. I agree that the jellyfish are a bit overpowering and I'm definitely going to do something about them.
hollietree and Okmer, thanks! I'm happy that you guys think the image is humorous.
Everytime I come to your image I have to giggle and laugh:D I found myself saying "A spot of blood anyone?" as the shark pours a cup. Hahaha... Never mind me I'm being stupid.
Lovely work Megan:thumbsup:

Hey there, I've been keeping an eye on your artwork and I think its great. Keep up the good work and I hope to see more.
10-12-2007, 06:14 PM
Hey megan, your work is really funny. I loved Finding Nemo and I get a feel for that. I like the color and the mood of the whole painting. I look foward to seeing more of your progress.
10-12-2007, 06:35 PM
Thank you. Finding Nemo was a good movie. Speaking of which, vegetarian sharks would've been a great strange behavior, but alas, the folks from Pixar took that idea already. More updates to come soon.
10-17-2007, 12:59 AM
Almost done. I've added some blood to the image, and pulled back on some of the lights on the shark (which were looking a little too intense for an underwater scene).
10-25-2007, 06:38 AM
My "strange behavior" illustration is of a trio of sharks with a slightly unusual preference for tasting blood. I have depicted the three sharks enthusiastically enjoying a quaint "tea party," in which they serve and enjoy the blood from a dainty tea set as other fish and invertebrates look on in disbelief.
10-25-2007, 07:23 PM
Hey Megan, everything is looking amazing. I wish you the best of luck in the challange and I think you can probably give most of them a run for their money. Funnny Stuff.
