CGTalk - cell division?

I'm trying to figure out a good way of making cells divide on a surface for a visualisation of cancer growth. I want it to work like when the cell particle spawns a new one it pushes the existing cells aside. Would that be possible, if so, how?
I'm after the kind of effect shown in this clip http://www.bitspin.net/tmp/snutt.avi
but with a lot more cells involved.
Any suggestions appreciated, thanks.

use a blobmesh compound object...

i used a noisy sphere as position object and shape instance. then i used a scale operator scaling particles up on particle age. thats the whole trick...

attachment is a max8 file. no plugins needed :)
