Just a picture of one of the Characters I built for my first book. (He comes already Rigged and ready to animate, 'cause hey, just because you want to be an Animator doesn't mean you want to be a Technical Director.)

You know, I hadn't noticed it before, but you're absolutely right, Wolfie's hands _are_ quite tiny! I was just doing Characature, trying to capture the certain _feeling_ I envisioned Wolfie to evoke from someone looking at him. Hey, Artists through the ages have "pushed reality" to create emotional responses from their viewers, right? :P
Even, (or perhaps especially,) in Cartooning, you are drawing a commentary on something. (I can't remember the Master Artists who said, "Within every good drawing is the element of Characature.")
The most powerful pieces, whether representational or non-, are drawing a commentary _about_ something, rather than just trying to do a perfect "copy." You see this most markedly in Photography, where the subject is by nature, "perfectly" reproduced.
Every line, every comparative size ratio of the Character, every balance of line type, weight and style evoke a feeling within the viewer. It is within these _feelings_ that you work as an Artist... what we create on "paper" is merely a catalyst... a Symbol.
Fantastic stuff, the second pic looks better to me because the character appears more like a sheet of paper, in the first shot the shading on the top of the characters left foot and to a lesser extent the shadow from his left arm reduce the effect. It would be really great to see an animation and see how the flatness effect works in motion. Yes the hand is small and dainty but it makes a great character with small hands, it would also be good to know what point (involving small hands?) it has to get over.
