Hey all,

Thought I'd start a sketchbook thread so I can evolve a little bit as an artist. Or so I hope. Need to have something to put some pressure on me. A little push to create! Started taking drawing seriously like two years ago. About 25 years too late. =P Thought I'd see how much fun I could have with it. And it's way too much fun. Never regretted it. But I still have tons to learn. And that's where you guys come in.

So far I've done a fair bit of drawing, but I'm really curious about this digital painting thing. So I've been cluttering with some brushes in painter for a while now. Must say it's quite difficult. Need to get some mileage at it before I can start creating some art.

My first paintings:

Yesterday I placed this beer bottle in my window and opened up painter and started painting it. Realized quickly that my construction and perspective was a bit off about 10 minutes into it. But I wouldn't wanna go back, so I continued on anyways. I know, shouldn't have done it. Lesson learned. I blame it on drinking it before I placed it in the window. =P Oils in Painter.

A color study I did tonight. This time a still from a movie I haven't seen. 'Wet Hot American Summer'? Looked like a silly movie. But I had to have something to practice on... Oils in Painter again.

Crits and so on.. Bring it on.

Cheers

Did one off a photo painted in photoshop this time. Learned about a ton. But I caught alot of things I need to work on. Not quite happy with this one. Maybe I'll give it a go in painter instead. Or stick to PS so I can learn more about painting in PS? Anyhoo..

great to see another Painter fan here :)
I like your loose brushwork...

looking forward to see more

Thanks NR43 =) 'Painter fans unite!' haha, yep, I really enjoy Painter. Kinda weird software at first, but it grew on me. Needs to grow some more. I really like that I can relate physically to the brush I'm using instead of having weird shaped brushes in all shapes and sizes al a PS brushes. Gets a bit abstract. But that could be an advantage too. I'm good at making up my mind you see. =P

ok, some femmes with pencil on thin paper. Need to do this more too. Hm.. Kinda see a pattern. 'Draw draw draw...'

Hey I really like your colour studies in painter, the one of the girl especially. Its really nice to look at it and pick all the different colours in the face. I never really quite understood how there can be green in flesh tones? Nice quick pencil sketches too. Look forward to seeing some more :)

D4ng3rmouse, Elnaz: Thank you guys. =) At the moment I try to keep it loose. Something about me not being 100% confident enough of rendering things to death. A reminder to self; Get down the basics first! Did I mention I should get down to basics? =P

Some heads out of my head. No refs:

http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/4327/2007100401vo6.jpg

Kinda freaky colors in this one. Dunno why I always pick these weird refs. I'll try to pick a more natural looking ref next time. Started off with likeness in mind, but I quit after several Painter crashes and just abandoned it.. Thought I'd bring it into my sketchbook since I spent some time on it. Now it's here to haunt me forever..

batte812: Thanks, I will! =)

BabKe: Thank you. I'll keep on doing those =)

Djampa: Np, I always enjoy watching other peoples work, so thank YOU. =)

Ok, one last painting before I turn the lights off. This is a portrait of a good friend of mine. I sort of own him that. Got him yesterday after being two years apart. Sad stuff, but hey, we're back together again! =P I know I shouldn't post non-figurative stuff that much (sketchbook rules), but I consider 'Bamsen' as a person, so there you go. =)

Hey it's your sketchbook... to my knowledge, you can post any kind of art you want here (as long as it's the product of a creative process), especially portraits of cute friends :)

do keep an eye on the size of the head when drawing gestures though (ref. post nr4)

the girl with the bluegreen background... awesome!

NR43: Thank you and thanks for commenting my gesture head sizes. I see they are off in size. I've added it to my 'things-to-think-about' harddrive. i.e my mind. =)

Shading experiments:

Wish I could've put in some more likeness, especially gotten the same character as the ref in the eye/brow area.

You guys. You're too nice. =) But there's still lot of untread ground..

Ok, so one last one tonight. Photo ref again. I wanted to paint something in Painter reflecting the season we're in now, so I tried to find someone who looked like fall somehow. So here goes:

Nice portrait you have there, quite nice. Your thread looks like it's onto an excellent start. Have you painted a full figure before using Painter. I'm Curious to see your technique on renderting the figure because you have nice touch with with color. Keep up the awesome work Vaaken.

Rangerman: Thank you! =) Actually I haven't. I'm still trying to find my voice in painting. I bought painter like in june, so I haven't got that much experience yet. I'll take that 'full-figure' thingy as a challenge. =)

Ok, some more practicing in painter. A danish bronze sculpt this time:

jtico, Intervain, NR43: Thank you so much =) and yup, it's in copenhagen. =)

Ok, so I have a plan; I'm gonna draw all the gesture ref images at www.characterdesigns.com (http://www.characterdesigns.com/) during the next months/years. I think it will be usefull and I'm doing it slow in the beginning. Thinking, observing, learning, absorbing. Don't mind the thick, bad lines, it's just me thinking, observing, learning, absorbing. =) A bit rough start on the first one there and I gave #1 a slight beard. *sorry* Anyhoo, it's a beginning.. And I really want to paint some more, but I don't have the time tonight though ... doh

PS: I'm a lefty, that's why the drawings start from right to left...

reaveress: Thank you!! =)

A'right, found some time to do some creative stuff. Gestures continuing on. I feel I need to loosen up a bit and maybe look into some anatomy/gesture bible of some kind just to keep things interesting. What do you guys think? Maybe I could try different mediums? Rangerman: Thanks man! =) I'll probably have a hands/feet session soon so I can experiment some more in that area. I keep them simple now, cuz I focus mainly on the body. =)

System404: Thanks! Ooh, have I improved? =D Yep, those first ones we're a bit on the plain side.. What I'm working on now is adding those humps and bumps into my drawing. And it's quite fun. =)

-voraz-: Thank you, glad you liked them. =)

Oo'right, my first set completed. Only 20 something to go... But that means plenty of quality time and learning. I'm starting to speed up a bit now and I've been doing some different stuff this time too. I guess I will continue to vary what I do with them. I'll just do whatever I feel like. =)

Did I ever mention what a great resource this part of cgtalk is? Thank you whoever has put in the effort to make this a great site. (just had to mention it)

WIP

So I decided to make a baby. :) or at least the head. I'll sculpt in a smile on him. I don't have any plans on animating it. We'll see how it goes. I'm currently at level 4 and I feel like re-topologizing it, cuz the nose and nose ridge area have become a little dirty. Started this one with ZSpheres. There's still some proportional things I need to work out before leveling up...

vaaken

Tried to create a better starting point. I'll refine the proportions as the next step. Don't mind the high poly count as I just needed a smoother surface to re-topologize on.

Thanks Anand! :) I regret topologizing it actually. Sorta kills the creative process a bit. Lesson learned. I should get used to sculpt from start to finish without re-topo the model. Long term goal. :D

Ok, so I made the baby a bit younger than I initially wanted to. And the expression ... Hm, not sure what to do there. I'm also thinking of putting the baby in a basket, draped in warm cloth. We'll see what happens. Need to fix the eyes... Leather hat should be replaced maybe? With some more modern, funky hat?

Sunday ZB doodle. Well it's actually off a ref so it isn't a doodle really. More of a study doodle I guess. I wanted to ZB a cartoony character just to feel how it was to sculpt those kinda forms. And it's quite enjoyable, but kinda diffiicult. I'm amazed of how rythmic those forms in a toon character maquette really is. Anyhoo, here goes:

So I've been sketching to some degree lately, and also trying to grasp my head around construction of the human head in any angle without reference. I saw that the sketches I've posted earlier needed some attention in that area. :D

Things I'm focusing on:
- Perspective. Getting used to think about my whole characters in 3d space on the paper. Foreshortening and all that stuff.
- Line quality.
- Shading.
- Sharpening of my pencil. Keep it sharp! (I know, I'm such a n00b)

Need to look into:
- Poses
- Hands
- Clothing/Fashion using this site for refs http://facehunter.blogspot.com/

I'll post some sketches soon in that focus area. For now I'll just put out these. Painted yesterday. Really weird stuff, but hey.. :)

Hi..vaaken..:)

Nice studies, and experiments...
You might try doing the hips/pelvic and toso first, then add the legs and feet..then the arms and hands,.then neck,...and last but not least, the head and face....If you get used to doing your figures in that order, you will not have the head with an added on body effect, which usually ends up with an oversized head...just a suggestion that might be of help to you while you are experimenting and exploring...:)
Really looking forward to seeing more of your work, and progress.. :)

jtico: Thanks man! :) I'll try!

anandpg: Thanks! :) I'll revisit that head after/during my upcoming head studying. So I hope it will turn out better when I know more.

NR43: Thank you for the "plus" mate! Especially when they come from such an active user such as yourself :) *appreciated* Funny you should mention the thing about pose - looking back on my sketchbook I see alot of stiffys. Hence, I need to look into poses. I should try to avoid stiffy poses in the future, but how? So I figured this out: If they're gonna be standing straight up and down, at least give them a cool pose or something. For all the other future sketches I should make the character have focus on something - make them do something like doing the dishes, be on the phone arguing, killing a monster, stroking a cat ... etc anyhoo ...

Cyanid: Thank you! Paper textures in painter are fun :)

SpiritDreamer: Thanks :) Killer advice there. I tend to start with the head on my imaginational stuff. Probably cuz it's my comfort zone at the moment. But starting with the torso will maybe allow me to create more dynamic poses as well. Next thing to try out!

Inside out!

Right, so posting my 'thinking sketches' as I learn about the head. It's been such a revelation learning about the bones of the head. I knew some of it, but why didn't I think of using that info in my drawing!? Geez, things will change - from now on I'm looking into drawing from the inside out taking in new knowledge about bones and muscles. Ambigious project, but I've realized that if I want to create believeable stuff I should know what's under the hood. So I'm starting out with the head, just because it's an important feature and I want to start on something familiar. And after the head, I'll work my way downwards the body. I'll try to apply the above goals as I go as well. And ofcourse, getting used to invent heads in 3d space on the paper.

So I see from my new sketches now that I need to stop putting down marks without thinking some first. Alot of proportions being off. And I need to do some more skull drawings and start on the features, especially the nose and ears.

Anyhoo, next time - less typing *phew*

ZB feature exaggeration. Basemesh level I'd say for the look of it as with everything else I've made in ZB.. I toyed around with rythms in the face. Trying to grasp it. The nose is a bit far out there...

Great update!

About the stiffness in the poses... Vilppu, Loomis and Hogarth tell me (through their books and dvd's) that it's ok to exagerate, but it's best to exagerate in the more dynamic direction.
Me too I have to work a lot on that and what I try is to force myself to exagerate the curves.
Eg if you have a pose in which a certain flow line could be defined as a big S, make the curves of that S wider than you originally intended.

Ah it's not easy to explain but I guess it all comes down to practice and you're a very productive artist so I'm looking forward to see the results of your experiments

btw, I think you did great on that profile of that girl in your last post, not much stiffness there :)

NR43: Thank you for input ! :) True what you say there. Btw, I just got a copy of Mattesis' 'Force' book and that's sort of his take on it as well. He's got really exaggerated curves, but he spends them wisely. Yep, it's all about that hard work and some day I might be able to see those forces in my drawings eh? :D

Not sure if your're familiar with Shane Glines, but his figures have got that schwung to them. Big time. Toon characters though.. I love'em. Anyhoo, here's for inspiration >> http://www.shaneglines.net/ Cheers!

Geez, started on this thing and couldn't let it go, and I thought I HAD to post something today. So here's tonights struggle. Swapped constantly between PS and painter. Double power. Yay! But the setting is a bit weird in this picture. Strange composition as well. You live, you learn..

HEY ..vaaken ..:)

Great studies...
If you are trying to understand the nature of curves to bring your figures to motion and life, do studies of the old masters who have mastered that effect...RUBENS, MICHELANGELIO, PONTORMO ECT.
To find out how they did it, get Burne Hogarth's book ..DYNAMIC FIGURE DRAWING..:)
Keep up the great work, and PROGRESS...

Gord-Macdonald: Thank you. :)

Spirit-Dreamer: Thanks! I'm a bit confused over all the art that exists in the world sometimes. Where I should get my inspiration from have up until now mainly been contemporary artists, concept art, production art. Probably because I'm self-taught and don't know any better. =P If I could unwind time I wish I could go to an art school to get soaked in all the history of art and get a solid foundation and understanding. But I can take those first steps now and look up the ones you mentioned. Go explore :)

Some thinking/phone doodles. I need to remember not leaving such hard marks all over the place and leave more of the drawing up to the viewers eyes. And shading... sheesh

That's a cute painting, very styalized and I like the backlighting on her. I like the comment you made on post # 63, it's humbling to see that sometimes things just don't work out. I try to save my drawings too when I know I'm on sinking ship. Your work looks stellar so far, keep up the good work.

Rangerman: Thank you :) Hehe, there's been some sinking ships in my world of artistic endevaours. My pile of horrible sketches is a proof of that. The weird thing is that if you just stick with it, it somehow works out in the end. There's alot of stuff in here which I know if I'd just stuck with it, it would look better. But then again, it's a sketchbook/thread right? :)

Finally got maya 2008 up and running and I created a very crude basemesh to do my first full figure in zbrush. Goal is to learn more about anatomy and focusing on gesture in muscles, bones and what not. I'm using all sorts of refs when I feel I don't know enough about what I'm sculpting. And my beloved Peck anatomy book has been worn down even more. When I start staring at how everything works leaving my preset anatomy knowledge on the side, I get the feeling I really don't know anything about it. :D But that's ze joy of it eh?

Started yesterday and reached level 4. I won't go any further until I feel comfortable with it.

Hi Vaaken. Very nice stuff, as always  . The metallic texture on the vase in the Ikea drawing looks great. Nice start with that body. Hope to see updates on 3D (but don't forget your paintings, cos they are great)

Cheers

jtico: Thank you so much! :) Oh yes, I'm updating this 3d project. I'll probably pick up my other ones later. Just need to build some more confidence I feel. I'll work on my paintings as well of course. But there I feel I need more confidence with the pencil first. Which will make, hopefully, my paintings better. I sound like an in-confident person don't I? =P

Right, so more studying of anatomy. Still on level 4 and trying to understand things. I haven't started on feet and hands yet as you might notice. :D A truly a daunting task this, but i feel I see things clearer each time I lay down a stroke of standard-brush.

Intervain: Thanks! :) I had an idea giving that clowns nose a slight tint of red actually emphasizing the clown going:"I'm just the nose, aren't I?" Could be the title of that painting.. Maybe I'll revisit that idea later on.

New QT turntable. Needed to go to level 5 so I could avoid those polygonal artifacts on the back. I'm planning on pushing the curvature on the muscles a bit more. He's appearing a bit dull and angular shaped at the moment. Make it more rythmical and fun! :bounce: I've learned alot so far by keeping my mind open and trying to grasp things.

Tried a different approach to blocking out shapes in ZB. Started off things a bit more traditional. Defining main shapes by 'adding clay' onto the model with clay brush. Leaving a square looking result with almost finished proportions. And then rubbing down shapes with other tools. This was for me a pretty effective method. Felt more creative. I'll explore some more later.. :) This was a quick test btw...

Fixed most of the proportional issues and started deciding on body type. Think I've got what I'm going for soon. I've been importing the model into maya just to get a second look at him. Apparently I got a bit confused by the focal length in ZB which is 70 by default. And I got some wrong impressions of the model while sculpting. The human eye's focal length is 50? Dunno what you other people do about this...

It's really great getting learning anatomy in 3d. There's alot of pieces that have fallen into place for me. :) I'm thinking about doing a female model as well. But there's still alot of work to be done on this guy! :bounce:

Alot of subtle work. Still got alot of work to do on hands, feet and head. And I fixed up the arms a bit. I did a small pose test and discovered something scary, anatomically speaking. :)

There's not really much art in this though. Just cold and boring realism I'm trying to aim for. But I gain learning from it so what the heck. :D
