There is plenty of research (http://wsupsy.psy.twsu.edu/surl/usabilitynews/42/text_length.htm) around showing that reading benefits from a shorter line length, why is CG Talk set at such a huge width?

Is there any way to change this?

To a ceratin degree it depends on your screen resolution. A forum is no news contents system with tidily formatted text. The ease of reading depends on those who post their texts by using the formatting features...

A very interesting article, though! I bookmarked it

Well, there are about 100 characters per line here, as opposed to the recommended 60.

Screen resolution doesn't change this, just the size of the text block (since the text size is defined in pixels in the css).

In a place like this where text isn't well formatted, it is even more important to make the reading as easy as possible.
