Greetings fellow artists!

Well I have a challenge/problem that I think will possibly benefit others also on here if it can be resolved.

I have a new project that i'm currently working on which is titled "Cold Storage" it's for a publisher and as such will be a front cover.

Amongst other things i'm going to try 3D aswell as traditional digital post work for creating this book cover.

However as i'm still in the early concept stages here's what the client has decided so far.

The title "Cold Storage" will be possibly created out of Icicles, the premise for the background will be something like a Refridgerator | Freezer | Butcher's Cold Room.

Now i'm ok with modelling aspects, I think i'll be able to build a nice enough Fridge scene, but i'm stuck with two pretty tricky elements.

1: Ice Materials | Shaders

2: Cold Air | Atmosphere Etc

So i'll post below what I've managed myself at the moment, it's pretty poor, but there are so many many talanted artists on here, hopefully some of you can point me in the right direction.

Also i'm a total newbie when it comes to things like pyrocluster, could it be possible to make cold icy air with that? if yes could someone tell me, and talk to me like a newbie, i'm a bit thick when it comes to learning lol.

I think a freezer or fridge would look great, what other elements should I place in there alongside the icicle text?

What would you do? Would you got for a Fridge? A Freezer? Or A Butcher's Cold Room?

It's a tricky one I think.

Any help on this one would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

I know my progress at the moment is poor, but i'm trying to figure out how to go about this, these are tests i've got done so far :)

Hi. Sounds like an interesting brief.

I think a heavy use of caustics will greatly enhance the ice and cold effects - I'm sure you've already thought of this though. I've picked up a couple of decent ice shaders over the years. I'm unsure of their origin though so I wouldn't want to tread on anyone's toes if I post them. But then, maybe that would be OK. I'm not sure.

How about having the lettering either carved out of a block of solid ice (you know, like when your refridgerator ices itself up occasionally) or maybe even have the lettering 'Cold Storage' printed on a bottle label and the bottle itself is iced up?

Anyway, just throwing ideas out there. Disregard or take on board as you see fit.

You see, that's why I thought i'd share this with the CG community, i'd had never of thought of that!

Definately food for thought there!

A little help with caustics might be in order, I have a pal who has Vray and has very generously said I could try that with the scene also.

From what I've gathered it doesn't have to be totally realistic, but a decent enough icy/snow dramatic scene will help.

Thanks for the advice and suggesions :)

A very good ice example, with scene included, can be found here:

It's the one by guillaum.

Ok well sorry for not updating in a while, it took me a few pages to find this original thread it had gotten lost and I didn't post that long ago lol.

Here's a few concepts that have been posted to the client, i'm not sure if they will like/choose any of these or mix and match a few and get me to make a hybrid concept for the book cover, but it's been hard to get the ice to look right. So are 3D some are photoshopped.

Kind Regards

The project sounds interesting, something i'd like to do :)

But i have to say you still have a long way to go until you have reached convincing ice, these results you have posted so far feel more like plastic than ice. You should get much better referencematerial and real icecubes and something and look at them close up to see their internal structure and how they behave when light hits them and what happens to light when it hits the surface and where does the light go.. maybe you see where i'm going with this.

Ice depends as much on the light as it does on the background/enviroment. If it's poor then so will your ice look. Everything has to be taken into account if you're looking for realism.

Good luck! :)

I completely understand what you are saying, but so far my client has expressed that the cover should be Icicles, but she said she's not especially concerned about photoreal renderings, she want's it to look cold and like icicles, her previous book cover that she's designed before herself were just text on a picture or a coloured background, I just wanted to offer her something different aswell as the type of thing she's designed herself in the past.

So no it doesn't need to be convincingly real, I think what I really need to do is make some text splines and deform the splines into drooping icicle texts and go from there.

Thanks for the comments

Well the client has viewed the concepts and likes the inside fridge of concept 02, she doesn't wan't it especially realistic, but she does want icicles on the text, which'll be easy enough to work out :)

Thanks
