Title: After the rain...
Name: Diane Özdamar
Country: France
Software: Photoshop

This is my entry for Saimain (http://saimain.deviantart.com)'s contest on Medowhaven (http://meadowhaven.net/php-bin/textdisp.php?module=Contest.txt).

The characters are Faeren, a young elf knight and Snoots, his little enchanted pet. The theme of the contest was to depict the relationship between Faeren and the Forest of Illusions, since he's part of this forest.

I wanted to make him look as a tree and also live as a tree, growing after the rain.

I've had a lot of fun painting it, I hope you'll like it :)

Photoshop CS3
Wacom intuos 3A4
50 hours approx
No reference used (it has been challenging and fun to paint ^^ )

Please take a look at the CLOSEUPS (http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/5676/detailsvy4.jpg), everything is lost in this version, there are lots of details that can't be seen in small size.

You can see the whole progress HERE (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=31&t=541707&page=1&pp=15)

Faeren and Snoots belong to Adele.

Your work is just magnificant, and you're constantly improving your techniques. It's pretty amazing to watch I must admit. This is easily one of your strongest pieces. The composition, color scheme and details are all working. The concept itself is really strong, and you managed to blend the human and tree quite well. As for the foilage... Flawless. 4 stars, quite possibly your best piece to date. :applause:

But, I can comment here, as well. Absolutely amazing! I love everything about this piece. The details, the mood, the whole thing is definitely a "WOW" factor. I wish I could display this as an oil painting for my living room wall! :applause:

(those spider webs look so real!)

Hi Diane! Wonderful mood you've captured. Love how you incorporated the (lovely:)) boy in relation to the tree. The whole painting is rich and full of interest. The little spider web and mushrooms are a great touch. Good luck in the contest but I know *luck* has nothing to with it! (5 stars and well deserved)

Thank you very much Eladamri and Darek :)

Eladamri : the colors may look weird on some monitors, it looks fine on mine but the web optimized jpg killed the colorscheme... How does it look on your monitor? Too dark? Too light?

Ok, I was impressed upon looking at this image. It is definitely deserving of top row. Next I looked at the close-ups (http://http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/5676/detailsvy4.jpg)...wow! You can get a true feel for the amount of detail and work put into this painting by looking at those. This is a beautiful piece with very rich color and texture. As always, I'm amazed by what is possible in 2d. Great work, keep it up.

superbe work.

may Cambronne's words be with you for the contest :buttrock:

Oh wow, thank you so much for the frontpage! Thank you! :)

Thanks a lot for your comments people!

About the lack of black, it could have been darker indeed, although I wanted to avoid using black as much as possible (even very dark areas are still colored, although it may seem black), I'll try to balance it better next time. The subject was the theme of the contest, I usually tend to paint nastier creatures ^^Thank you for your feedback :)

About the girl thing... erm... "she" is a boy, although he looks a bit feminine indeed, I tried to stick to the guidelines :)

Thanks again for all your comments and critiques, it means a lot to me!

Hi Dianae, this is such a awesome work, i just couldn't stop staring at it...
there is a small thing i wanna say...the purple-ish butterfly at left bottom( the one standing on the tree) looks clearer than the tree it's standing on..so that it looks a bit nearer than the tree...may be it's just me...i feel it's not landing on the tree...Please kindly ignor me if you don't think so hahaha~Xp. Anyway it's already really really lovely!Love it!

Great piece!!!

Saw it on the front page.

I have to say though, he looks ALOT like the girl from Harry Potter!
Like he could be her brother.
I thought it WAS her from the way it looked on the front page.

About the likeness with the girl in Harry Potter, I am as surprised as you :D I've had to browse some google images to figure out how she looks like, I had not thought about her face at all when painting him (and I didn't even remember her face so it's pure coincidence), that's funny :D
