View Full Version : Character - Carly - ProtoType
FrizzyCube 04-07-2003, 11:07 AM Hi everyone. :)
Although I've been checking this forum out for a while now, this is my first time here signing in and posting something.
I'm a bit nervous since I have very little experience in 3d, plus this is only my 2nd week in to using 3ds Max. (I know, where the heck was I? LOL)
Needless to say this is my first model, although as you can see it's a WIP as I maneuver my way through the painful curves of the 3D path.
I named her "Carly".
Some C&C would be appreciated...
But please be gentle.

Man, I haven't even got one reply yet and already my palms are sweaty. LOL
CG talk is full of top notch talented CG artists so it's a bit intimidating. Hope you don't mind my rambling. :wip:
Dude, for having so little experience in 3D you've managed to model a very nice head! You don't seem to have fallen into the trap of other early head models: eyes seemingly popping out of the head of surprise, small foreheads or mangled ears. It all seems to fit well in your model. Great job! I prefer Prototype A actually. The mouth just seems better modeled there. I think the outer edge of the eyebrows (or rather the skull underneath) could stick out a bit more. And for a neutral pose, maybe give her less of a pout (unless you went for that look).
Nice one!

Thanks for the C&C Wiro :) I'm taking note to what you said so far. I agree, I do need to put a dent (?) around the outer edge of the eye.
And the lips... LOL well the funny thing is I did do it intentionally to make it look like she's pouting. (Sorry, I have this thing for women who do that. But that's just my thing. LOL) But yes, I think I'll make a neutral version of this as well.
Ironically ProtoType A & B's lips are really no different as they weren't altered in anyway, except maybe for the texture. I had to repaint and UV map it over since Prototype A's method wasn't working in my favor. (Embarassingly enough, Planar)
I have to admit, I had to go through a whole bunch of trial and error this past week to get to this head. But then again, it was mostly due to getting used to the learning curves of 3ds Max...
Heck! ... getting started & used to 3d modeling/texture all together!
I was a 2d type of artist till now and ironically it looks nothing like my original work, since I do a lot of Anime/Manga styled art. LOL
Thanks so much again for the C&C. :)
Heya, I like Prototype A too! :D

hehehe, oops then, must be the lighting. But PA looks smoother there where as PB has a sort of shadow along the mouth rim that doesn't fit there at all. Alltogether PA looks a bit smoother.

Hmmmm I was just working on it right now. Can't seem to get rid of that shadowy area on the side of the mouth. :hmm:
I may need to cut it up a little more (?) since it doesn't seem like there are any extra vertexes/polygons. Hmmm I wonder what I'm doing wrong here. :surprised
P.S. By the way Wiro, been following your site and have it bookmarked for a while now. Hehe I'm a fan of your work. :)

LMAO!!! It's funny you guys should mention, it originally started out as Carly Pope (hence, the name) and then it slowly mutated in to Gina Gershon which was not intentional. I was like "Hmmmm she looks familar." LOL I guess this all changed while I was drawing the face.
sebek27:
I used the poly by poly method since I feel I have more control over it like drawing. I tried doing the box method 2 weeks ago but I noticed it getting progessively worse.
And yes, I used Photoshop 7 + wacom tablet for the texture.
I had to go back and forth 3dsMax and Photoshop. I would have used the 3D paint softwares out there but hey I guess what ever works right?
As for the tutorial my friend showed me this which was by far the most comprehensive and helpful one out there.
The link is...

Although I think Wiro's tutorial on the ear is better. LOL
Does anybody have a good recommendation on tutorials in making a human figure?
A Brazil tutorial would be nice too.
::Hint hint:: ;)
Thanks for the comment all :) I reallllllly appreciate it.

When I see the flat shaded view, it looks kind of plain, but your texture work is what makes this model 'jump' out.
Can you post the different layer of texture you use (bump, spec, etc) to map her?? I would like to see how you achieve what you did here, because I think it's good.

Thank you Vorlon :)
Texturing, since it's like drawing to me is probably one of my stronger points,
as the modeling part is where I really need to improve upon.
But in your request I'm posting some textures / bumps / opacity maps here.
(Some I left out, and some are a work in progress)
These are all hand drawn by the way, and not sampled from anywhere as you can see.
(Although I think I should sample from elsewhere)
The resolution is reduced so forgive me if it's a bit fuzzy.
(Either that or too big? LOL)

Thank you :)
I like the hair part too although I know it needs more improvement. (I'm particularly picky with hair)
By the way does anyone have any tips on making a good semi-translucent ear? Kinda like where you can see the pinkish redness through it when the sunlight hits it.
I tried using a transparency map for this but am having a hard time. :hmm:
