I have just completed my demoreel, a compilation of work I have done during my Master degree at ATI université paris 8. All done with maya, real flow, and after effect for compositing. 2 minutes of work plus 1 minut of breakdown.
Hope you like it. Crits and comments welcome.

SPECTACULAR, BREATHTAKING. I felt like I was watching some great space epic.

Yes indeed, fun demo - I don't watch many of these twice. It definitely has the feeling of a larger story with all these small sub-plots. I really dig the ship crashing through the atmosphere - that's almost spooky to watch. All the clouds, smoke and debris are great.....

incredibly tasteful work. every single shot has some epic quality to it. great compositing also. i love the bokeh effects, dof, flares and glows. 5 stars from me.

seems like your server's being hit by a lot of traffic right now. i was downloading the reel at work at about 300kb/s but now at home i'm having just 2kb/s.

I have only 1 point i'd like to criticise.. at 0'40+ there's a water closeup shot.. to me it looks like if only the bumpmap was moving and the displacement stood still. I had to look twice at it but I still have that impression.

Rebolt : As you can see in the breakdown I used several passes of santard maya particules, to get trails and traces. I also used Trapcode particular (a greaaaaat AE plugin) to get flicking stars, it's realy easy to have color random particules and nice motion with it.

Eisman : Yep the bump map moves faster than the displace, I thought it was not so obvious, so I dont fixed it, but you are right :) .

Excellent reel! Very well done. The way the imagery worked with the music reminded me a lot of a movie called Baraka. Both the demo section and the breakdown worked really well together, and got the point across very effectively.
Feels like I just watched a Film and A good one!
The music was beautful as was your reel.

Did you generate all that smoke&clouds and similar from Maya? I didnt know Maya Fluid FX is so powerfull...
And your reel is an awesome visual expirience!
Congratulations on your consistently excellent reel.
I have a couple of questions about the fluid effects, I assume the water splash (like in the example pic) was done in realflow, did you simulate it with a really high fps, or did you do it in realtime with a lot of drag? Also, did you get that flow straight from an emitter with some noise, or did you splash it out of a container? Sorry for such specific questions, but I'm doing a realflow project that has some similarities and I really like the look of the sim you got.

I just have to say one thing: Wow! That was one of the most stunning reels I have ever seen, like Lman said: 'like watching a movie'. Good job man.

Concerning lighting and shading it was quite easy because a lot of elements are metalic surfaces and for that one you just need a good HDR environement. Some spotlights to get shadows and enhance edges brightness (rim lights). The cathedral shots were more difficult to light, I calculated a FG solution at different time steps to gather all areas covered by the camera. I have rendered an HDR panoramic of my cg set to get correct reflections on chromed elements. For each shot I usualy render a main pass (reflection, shadows, and specular), an occlusion pass, a zpass, dirt pass (to alterate some areas of image) and sometimes I used soft and hard specular pass in false color, to adjust each specular individualy in comp.
For the spacecraft I have used custom passes, color, diffuse, shadows, specular,AOV, occlusion, certains of these passes are in false colors ( one light per channel : 1light in R, 1 light in V,...)
For color correction. I always try to have cg renders with good exposure, that means, no black or white spots in the image. After it's easy to dark or bright those areas in compositing. To get the final look, I just used curves, it 's very interesting to play with all channels to get what you visualy need. I looked for old pellicules texture with a washy and grainy look. It's a very subtel process, and if you are working in 16 bits it can be more subtel and interesting (for my demo I was not able to deal with 16 bits pictures). I also was focusing on cameras artefacts, that means DOF, dust particles, scratches and stains on lens, lens flare, highlights bloom...
To have a bohek DOF I used Lenscare, a plug for AE. It's very good plug with hilights and iris control. You can apply DOF with a depth map, and get a focus zone with a cursor. But it has some issues with aliasing ( if you want a very pronounced dof with geometries overlapping it 's easiest to render your elements in layers according to their position in camera space (Z))
Concerning RF, all the simulation here are made with fields (noise or wind are good ones :) ) and circle emitter, no geometry was used to sclupt the fluid. For the slow motion shot you can see in the breakdowns, it's little tricky, there is no simulation, I just import a single mesh (1million poly) that I keyframe, just a slight rotation and translation... You can also experiment with non linear deformers to had some turbulences and deformations on the mesh, but I never tested it with a 1million polys geometry. I never used RF before my demo works, I have learned a lot with the last gnomon dvd, RF sculpting fluid and some digital tutors for very basics lessons.
All the fluids are Maya Fluids, I used differents techniques depending of the smoke passes I needed. It 's important to check the visor examples, there is a lot of good stuff in it. I used 3d fluid containers with dynamic simulation that I parent to the spacecraft. I also used particules with 3d fluid textures. With this solution you combine the nice shading of fluid with the flexibility of particules. Look for Overburn plugin by Peter Shipkov.
But as you can in the breakdowns, smoke on the impact was not a one pass render. Instead it needs a lot of differents pass : dust particules, particular trapcode, fluid fx, stockshots, instanced geometries,...
I will post some MA scenes of fluids.

Not bad, Not bad at all. I really enjoyed your reel, I felt that the most important thing youve achieved in your reel was that it was very proffessional, and consistant. Alot of reals show flashes of greatness, but are week in other areas. For the most part you had good balance. Keep up the good work, and keep improving.

I work at Gnomon as a labtech. At work we all gathered around the monitor and watched your work and were just stunned. I keep grabbing students and making them watch your reel. Very very inspiring stuff.:)
