View Full Version : Maya robot animation

Some time ago, I start to medeling in Modo Optimus prime ( Before the movie), now I will to animate it in Maya bake the animation and back to modo to render the scene.
In the Maya help files there is a tutorials that explain how to rig a mechanical arm, but I don't think this is a right way, can you help me to start riggin the robot?

Maybe if you post some images of the arm you are having trouble rigging, it would be easier to help you.

There are lots of ways to rig a mechanical arm
I would suggest adding joints (bones) inside of the model.
Just click the "Animation" tab on your shelf (or Skeleton > Joint Tool in Animation Menus). Place the bones in the places where you want the parts to pivot. You will need to play with it for a second to see how the heirarchy chain works... it's very simple.
After all of the bones are in place, select a mesh, then select the bone that it will be attached to and hit P (or Edit > Parent). Do this for all of the mesh/bone couples and you will have a rig.
This isn't going to make a very good rig at all, but you will be able to animate it. Now you can go in and grab any of the bones and move them around.
If you are wanting to know how to make a better rig, you are going to have to do a lot of learning/research as character rigging is an entire field of its own, but maybe this bit here will get you through this project.
