View Full Version : Constraining a bullriders hand to saddle
mtheory 04-07-2003, 03:47 AM Any advice on how best to constrain the left hand of a bull rider to the bull's saddle? We'd like to be able to animate the bull rider, leaving the hand on the saddle handle..and letting the IK do most of the work for the bending of the arm.

Maybe root the rig in the hand that;s on the saddle? Would that work? It is unconventional... and means no copying of weights and stuff. Probably not what you want but then i suck at rigging ... still ...
If you group the handle and the saddle?
[perhaps what i say here is really wrong but i would like to know the right answers too]

This might work.
Parent a locator under the saddle and move it to the handle of the saddle.
Group your ik arm controller.
Move the pivot of the group to where you want the hand to constrain from. Like just in the palm where the fingers attach.
Point and orient constrain the group to the locator.
The group should pop to where the locator is, and if the locator gained rotations from the parent the hand would rotate too.
If the hand rotates, then first orient the locator(while still child of sadle) to the group, then delete the constraint.
Now where ever the saddle moves the group should move. The hand controller is the child of the group so should move with it. As well you could still move the hand controller.
That should work, its just off the top of my head though.

Umm, this is off topic, but bull riders, as in the rodeo sport, don't use saddles. They hold on to a rope tied around the animal's girth. But bulls of a certain disposition, even among the Bos indicus derived breeds can, in fact, be tamed and trained to the saddle (trained, not broken--bulls do not respond at all well to force).
