Hi everyone, i have a character and i'd like to create a normal map from a higher detailed version of that character done in Mudbox.

I'm afraid that Max won't be able to handle the file cause of all those polys. Does anyone know if Mudbox is able to render normal maps of the mesh or should i try to find some program to optimize my mesh before bring it back in Max.

Thanks everyone :)

Mudbox is of course fully capable of rendering the normal map (and displacement map), since that's one of its main purposes, next to sculpting.

Assuming you have the base mesh and the corresponding high resolution version inside MB, just go to the 'Utilities' menu, pick 'Texture baking' and 'New operation'. This is really basic stuff that you'll find covered in your MB manual.

Oh, and there is a Mudbox-specific sub forum here too -> http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=221

Good to know, i haven't looked really yet, but i'm looking forward to. I also presume that your base mesh must be unwrap before so that the normal map can be rendered properly. Again thank you for your time
