View Full Version : Pulling a "Houdini" in 3dsmax?

I'm going to do technical animations using 3D Studio Max for something though I am not sure how to go about it. Say I want to move an object from one area of the workspace to another without actually dragging it -- i.e. dematerialising it in one location, and then rematerialising the hidden, moved model elsewhere in the scene.

Is there a way to cause this effect during a rendered animation? Also how do I move the now hidden model without creating a brand new animation?

Let me get this right, you want the object to fade out, then fade in at another location? Or at least that's what I'm reading into it.

How about an animated texture?

To make this easier for the client, all the models will be untextured. This is so that anybody viewing with something like, say, colour-blindness, doesn't have any problems.

If it makes it easier, isn't there just some way to have an effect that makes one copy of the model disappear and then a duplicate of it seem to appear?

This is just a guess, but I'd think it would work. I assume Max has layers (Maya here) - put your items in layers, turn off visibility, move timeline, turn on visibility --?

You could always just have 2 separate objects with individual animated materials. Animate fading one material out with the opacity material slot while fading the other material in. You could even use a black and white colour gradient and animate that which would determine where the alpha starts fading etc. That's how I would go about it, sure it's not so procedural but little tricks like that make people's life alot easier ;) Hope I've been able to help.
