First scribbles of gesture and general idea of image. Searching myself to find alternatives to the grand image I already have developed in my mind. These are meant to play, experiment and discover anything new that interests my eye. No details at all.

Warming up
Hi everyone I am new to CGSociety on a whole, I just signed up last week:bounce: . I am already obsessed with this network and a big fan of all the artists and art I see produced here. I know it's a bit late in the challenge as I just discovered it, but better late than never I say. Anything is welcome... all input will be more than appreciated. I love this environment and I hope to develop greatly from your critiques and support. Happy creating to all of you!
I will try to break the story down as I go along without spilling it all out immediately before you can see some solid imagery. Final evaluation of composition and line art sketch coming up soon.

Hi Hiun, just saw you've also entered the challenge, cool!
You're not telling much about your ideas yet - but the sketches let me hope a lot. Something about ripped out hearts (if I'm seeing it right) is always good :)
I'll watch your tour, looks promising! The woman looks sad...

Arne (painpainting) - You have a good eye my friend. I shall speak more about the story on my next post. Nice to have you along for the ride, thanks for the support.:)
http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/19/14054/14054_1191455647_medium.jpg (http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/19/14054/14054_1191455647_large.jpg)
Concept/Story: A woman found the person that she was really in love with, saw everything that she wanted in him and loved his heart and soul. But, the man is only human and so he is never perfect all the time and she wants perfection all the time. So she figures if she just had the part she really loved (his heart) and got rid of the man (the imperfections) then she would be fully happy and pleased all the time.
The subtle smile on her face makes her seems as if she is in a dream and everything she has ever wanted has been made possible.
The man, who will be covered in blood doesn't look like he was murdered or even in distress, he looks relaxed and calm as if he was just sleeping. Reason being because he also loved her so much that he willingly gave her is heart so she could be fully happy.
I started with the idea of them facing each other, but as I progressed I didn’t want them to be on the same level and seem as equals.
The structure of the image is the woman and the heart on the same height (face to face) with her arm cradling it and giving it a point of focus and to show also a high level of importance (as if to guard and secure it). I thought of having her grasp the heart and hold it close to her, but when I did some trials it seemed too harsh and cold as if I were to draw her with her back turned, and I didn’t want that feeling. So not touching the heart gave it a sense of delicacy, something pure that should not be touched and tainted in any way.
I moved the man further down in the composition to signify being below her, but not in a demeaning sense. I have the woman placing her hand on his head to show that she is still in touch with him and he is not discarded, even in death. The meaning I had in mind for the man being lower in the composition and below the woman is because in truth he places her above himself.
I would like to use the saturation of color to tell the story instead of just painting the image. I will also be leaning toward abstract qualities to explore the unknown and strange things that can just happen in a painting. The color will be strongest in saturation at the focal area and desaturate as it drifts away. The color palette chosen for this piece is in itself a part of the story (blue, red, violet, purple and white). I chose those colors based on their meanings and also the flowers they represent;
Gloxinia – love at first sight (purple, red, white)
Heliotrope – Devotion, Eternal Love (purple)
Forget Me Not – Faithful Love, True Love, Memories (blue)

Testing colors and focusing on capturing the expression of the female along with focal area. (Reference: pictures I took of friends and self in sleeping position)

Great progress so far, the fabric is spot on! :)
Curious to see where this is going, keep it up!
Hideyoshi - Thanks a lot,:bounce: I am curious myself where it will end up

I have gone a completely different direction than I originally planned. I will try to keep the color compositonal idea, but this process is so much fun, anything can happen. I have already discovered new approaches to take. I am just letting my feelings guide me from this point on.

Last variant for today. I believe the final image will end up being much more controlled... maybe. Let me know if anyone has any suggestions, I always appreciate the input.

Great concept, great image so far!!
I like this "wild" nature of that last image - so don't become too controlled :)
One thought from my side. The last image looks great, specially the moody darkness at the bottom und the clear white at the top. But the bedsheets (?) are nearly vanished, I couldn't recognize them if I wouldn't have seen the previous stages. I think it's helpfull to recognize them maybe a little more, to underline that they are lying and not standing - imo
I can't wait to see more progress

Arne
Arne (painpainting) - Thanks for the support and critique:thumbsup: I too like the last image, but as you said, the sheets have disappeared and I will have to bring them back eventually. Another concern of mine that I noticed are the circles (graphics) that are too recognizable... I will have to destroy those also :D . I don't know where this will end up yet but getting your input sure helps a lot in making decisions. Thanks so much again!

Hey Hiun,
First thanks a lot for stopping by my thread and leaving your generous comments dude... Secondly, I'm really impressed with the way you introduced your story, your explainations on the subject, and the level of symbolism in the image are just the right amount! I say that because I think it's hard to be successfull and not-cheezy, when people take on the topic of romantic relationships.
the way you handled the placement of the hart and other elements just works. your logical explainations for them already formed you a balanced composition itself. i like the poses and proximities. your canvas shape is pleasant, and energy of your collage is attracting. Your color comps look amazing; considering your story, I liked the purple-blue toned compositions better. I also see the lady being very soft and glowy, quietly washed in whitish colors, like you see in insurance or bank commercials, while the heart being sat red with blood splashes around it; though, that's just what i see :D Transitions from that softness at the top, to the crazy paint marvels towards the bottom will play a decisive role in this image I think. Keep it up!

I really like the play between the warms of the flesh and the cools elsewhere in the last two posts. Nice detail in the face. The back shoulder looks a bit odd, however it could be the deep cast shadow causing that. Nice work!
Jassar - Haha, I am actually very happy you find it cheerful because that's exactly a feeling I want from it. It's not intended to be a sad moment, can go as far as warm, but not sad. Thanks for sharing your opinion, always welcome.:D
Jeff - Hey Jeff thank you so much for dropping by and sharing your insight, greatly appreciated; Very kind and uplifing comments. Nice that you mentioned your take on it and how you see it because I too like the purple-blue tone, which is actually meant to be the main colors. I like pushing things till they break and then step backward and see what works. I learnt something new from the last post (the wild graphical feel) and because of that I see where not to go:) . I will be stepping backward a little and warming up the background with a low saturated orange to compliment that blue and pull slight greens into the blue to compliment the purple and richen the feeling of the blue. At first what bothered me was the vast amount of white, but now that I have got rid of most of it, I can now see where I need to go. I will start pulling the white back in slowly after warming the entire image and setting in the main focus colors (Blue-purple). Let me know what you think?:D
Marco (medunecer) - Excellent, I will be following along with your updates as well. Great to have you along Marco!:bounce: You too have a creative day!
Cliff (SideAche) - Thank you so much for your input and critique. Nice eye on the shoulder, it does seem to have separated away from the arm (resulting cast shadow from some kind of super dramatic lighting, haha):D Need not worry, I am going to pull the figure out from all the chaos, so that area won't be so deep. Great you noticed that because I could have missed it. Thanks a lot! Nice to have you along.

wonderful colours! plus the fabric folds are simple fantastic!
can you do a combination? ... like keeping the fabric in #12 and overlaying the colours present in your latest update .. somehow the details in fabric are fading into the black area and crops ...
your work has got a deep meaning .. but im not able to pin point what it is ... very very curious to know about it .. :D and the next steps too :p
cheers dude! god bless ya!
Daniel (Omnidzyne) - The software I am using to create the entire piece is Corel Painter X
Neville (nwiz25) - Great to see you! Thanks a lot for your support, comments and critique:bounce: To answer your question... Yes I can certainly do a combination. In fact, that is exactly what is going to happen :D I am going to pull the original back out from underneath all the later versions of my experiments. It's great to know what appeals to everyone because the input sure helps the decisive process along:) I greatly appreciate the input! As I move further along I hope to achieve something you touched on; being able to have the viewer grasp the meaning without having to read the background story. I hope to provide an updated visual soon.
Have a splendid day! Good to have you along for the ride.

Greetings Hiun,
Very deep, waxing poetic with quite a story and in the end I get the point! Your image has great soul and heart! It is refreshing to see an artist that is not afraid to blend technologies and media, way back when (long ago) some photographers got all upset when one altered a photograph. It is great to see this work unfold.

hey Hiun, thought I should also drop my 2 cents here if you don`t mind
first of all I like the idea alot; in the very first moment I thought it`s perhaps too much of a stereotype, but after I read your story I have this "yeah that`s cool"-grin^^
I liked your first version the most, the two bodies in this huge white bed, the bedcover waving around this wonderfull focal point, the red heart would come out really nice that way I think...very stylish and a bit of understatement ;)
keep it coming man
Mathias (guterrez) - I accept your 2 cents, and I am now 2 cents richer:D I certainly don't mind at all, infact you were a great help. My biggest concern was straying too far away from the initial feel of the image, but the vast amount of white disturbed me. Now that I have got my canvas dirty I can think more clearly. I am more leaning towards pulling back to the intial, but still leaving traces of all the buildup I have done which should enhance the depth. I need to complete the figures too, I think that would help a lot in knowing how far to push and pull the paint around the focal point. You opinions are always welcome.
Much appreciated Mathias! Thanks a million and 2 cents! haha:thumbsup:

Hey there. Thanks again for your comments! I really like what you've been doing with this piece. I think the imagery is very dramatic, and you're definitely communicating the ideas and emotions you've described. I also like the colors and textures you're incorporating into the image; it's very different from other paintings I've seen here. I'm curious to know how you're going to address the male figure (painting wise) or if you're going to leave him as is?
Megan (VitruvianMango) - Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing your thoughts with me. I am glad you like the direction in which it is going. To answer your question... I won't leave the male as is, I am going to fully develop the figure, but he won't be as prominent as the female. After I fully develop the figures I will then be able to better relate them to the rest of the image. I am not able to see all the options available to me because the figures aren't fully developed; so that will be my next step. I can always subtract later on, but I best get my main subjects done soon:D
Thank you so very much for your kind comments and for supporting me Megan.
I wish you the best of productivity and a fantastic week!
Hey Kamal, that its a really evocative piece of art my friend, I like a lot your texture style painting, really cool!! Perhaps diminish the "chaotic" lines from the man face to the top of the canvas, only a comment :) Really great work mate!! Cheers!
Ferx - All comments are welcome friend:) Your input helps a lot, so whatever you have to offer I am all ears. I greatly appreciate you stopping by and providing your thoughts on the piece:thumbsup: Thanks!

Poetic, thoughtful and mesmerizing work, I'll definitely stay suscribed to this thread.
As for suggestions, I think you are on the right track by searching for a balance between the first version and the more dramatically colorful ones. It would be a pity to lose completely either the intimacy of the first version or the drama of the others.
Just my opinion, of course. :)

Hi Kamal! You have an unique style, I'll watch your progress. Good luck! Cheers!
Tiziano (Thaldir) - Thank you so much for checking out my thread Tiziano, I greatly appreciate it. You are so right about it being a pity if I were to lose completely any of either versions. I am finding it difficult to narrow it down, mostly because I keep finding new interesting elements and in addition I am having so much fun with the process. Today was supposed to be my day to relax but here I am working on the piece:D You know how it is, once you start...... hahaha. Good thing is that I have found what it is I have been looking for (good thing I didn't relax afterall). I hope to share it soon.
Thanks again for the encouragement and I wish you a great week!:bounce:
Ashiataka - Thanks a lot Ashiataka, great to have your support!
Hey guys! I will be posting a few variants soon just based on the feel of the color comp. It would be great to have your input and thoughts or maybe just which one/s you favor. Wish you ALL the best!

I have a small suggestion in the bottom portion of your pick is there any way you can keep the texture and color you have and still faintly put in a pic. The pic I’m thinking of is a bust shot of the guy at the table with a wine glass in front of him, but the woman is standing to the right of the scene looking down at him smiling with left arm crossing her waste and holding her drink in the right. If can try and get that drink up sucka kind of body language and facial expression. I’m thinking it might give the viewer more insight but its looking great cant wait to see what your going to do.
Haha, that is quite sinister Wesley:D Your concept is possible, would only take a slightly larger canvas. But in this case, it would go very far away from the story, because the man willingly gave his life:) The image is chaotic and is still visually vague at this point, but it will come together very soon. My process is such that I let the piece go anywhere and everywhere until it tells where I should stop and focus:D I find the works turn out much more expressive and oddly enough often times subconsciously still linked to the theme.
Thank you so much for sharing your idea with me:bounce:

Yep. there's something about the first one that just make for a great image, and the simplicity helped for a easy catch of the message. Now is much harder to read, the curly line formed by the arms conected the hearth to his former owner in such a nice way!! and the black in my opinion would be a good addition if you keep it in smaller mases maybe, right now it is all around the area of the guy's body and I think that makes him almost disappear from the image. Other than this you have an amazing picture and concept, keep it going! and good for you for letting your guts take control every now and then!! !! !!
Gabriel (SteevieWoo) - Thanks a lot Gabriel, for your comments, critiques and support. Great to have you around:thumbsup: I am dying to see what's new on your canvas :D

Argh... I should have come by here a long time ago, sorry  Well, on to your great work:

Hi Kamal! I like a lot the style and mood you are going for! I wish you best of luck! and the colors are great!
Martin (MartinNielsen) - Great to have you stop by Martin! You're here now that's all that counts:thumbsup: Thank you so much for the compliment. It's a comment like that which lets someone know they are going right somewhere. Thank you. I always loved expressive strokes and mark making rather than controlled applications when it came to me and the paper one-on-one. If I had everything my way the image would just complete itself and I wouldn't have to worry about tighting up :scream: hahaha. It's nice to just let go and have the media take over sometimes and just not think about what you are doing, you can always make sense out of it later:). I guess you could say painting with your feelings before your logic.
You like Variant 6 :) Maybe later you will figure out why you like it, but at least you just know what appeals to you, and that helps!
Maybe you like 6 because it's the most soft of all the variants, blends well and just works:) I too love 6, but I also like the heat in the warm orange of 5. I feel a blend is in order!:arteest:
Great to have to stop by Martin, thank you so much for your support!
Axel - Thank you so much Axel, greatly appreciate your support. I am very happy you are pleased with the color, as it is very important to the piece. I wish you all the best as well

Lovely! This one's prmising!
The fabric looks sweet!
My only crit is that it looks a little left-heavy right now. Maybe you could crop some of the right area or add something there...?

It looks slightly unbalanced weight wise, if I may say so, but on the other hand I dig your work with hues and harmonies. Great piece!
Csik (chile88) - Thank you so much for the support! I will:thumbsup:
Arne (painpainting) - Hey Arne, thanks so much for your input! I love 2 also:D Good to know we are on the same page:thumbsup:
Neville (nwiz25) - Hey Neviille nice to have you drop by to help out.:D You hit the nail on the head because 2 and 6 are exactly what I brought together with a touch of the orange in 5 to heat up the lower portion. The image is looking amazing and the blood has made it's intro. I decided to make it graphic to keep that touch of wildness in there; which I have stepped back from almost completely as you might have seen in these variants. I am still letting the blood conform to the fabric a little, but not too much, as I find the more expressive laydown of the paint is in keeping with the emotion and feel of the image. I am working like crazy on the fabric, refining it untill I am happy. I will give much further info and a lot more detail as I go along.
Back to work!:bounce:
Thanks a lot for the time you take to support me, greatly appreciate it!
p.s. Yes you are right, the figure of the guy is me:D
Mark (mdavid) - Thanks for the support and encouragement Mark. Your input lets me know I am on the right path. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughts.
Best wishes!
Raul (harachte) - Thanks for stopping by to share your thoughts with me Raul, greatly appreciated. You are absolutely right about the weight, it is unbalanced in it's current state but it will be cropped to it's original compositional proportion. I just made the canvas bigger so I could flow my strokes out of the border rather than restrict them within it.

Hi Hiun,
Great to see this work come to life (except the one guy). I like this piece but the reds looked a bit too happy maybe 20% darker red (more oxidized blood like) and the top right needs something.
file:///G:/DOCUME%7E1/Me2/LOCALS%7E1/Temp/moz-screenshot.jpg
Ralph (Korendo) - You are absolutely right Ralph on both:D I have been working so hard on refining the fabric that I have not got around to posting the update. The blood is a lot deeper and rich, I am sure you will love it . I kept some of the graphic feel to it as well; I think the right amount. As for the something to the top right, I have an idea of what will go there, but it won't be exactly top right. I am going to crop the image and then figure out the layout of the flowers. The flowers are what I will use to balance the composition:) I want to give them a rythmn:D so I am saving them for last.
Thanks a lot for your critique Ralph, I always appreciate the input:thumbsup:
Hey Kamal, that fabric is amizing and superb, i love it!! really great!! I´m think perhaps the blood can form a sort of flower , that can be a nice touch and put a peaceful note on the concept, .... only a bad idea ... hahahahaha :D Again, awesome work my friend! Cheers

Hiun, great to see the blood stained bed sheets, always ready to see some blood'n'gore
You wrote that there is already an updated version, so maybe some of these blood thoughts are already not up to date any more:
- normally I would say that there can't be enough blood, but in this case I would try less blood
- for me the blood structure at the borders looks too painted, nearly as done in watercolours. I would assume that the blood would have more "straight" borders with a gradient, especially if the bed sheet is laid over the body after the "crime" (a slowly blood-soaked sheet), maybe with some spots
- the blood structure should maybe fit a little bit more to the bed sheet structure, concerning the shadows and lights of the folds
Can't wait to see the blood in progress

Hey kamal, it's looking good man!
The dance of the soft colors around bottom and left edges of your canvas are just delicious.. Only thing I want to comment on is the coloring around the heart. Now the heart has a very strong and saturated red, dark edges, and a strong and saturated blue around it. I feel like the heart and its surrounding is fighting against each other colorwise right now a little. You could try softening that blue, or maybe another solution, so that whichever one you want to emphasize has a stronger appearance. also, the red of the heart and the red of the blood are very close to each other now, thus trying to draw our attention from each other. these are my 2c buddy, feel free to ignore...
keep it up!
Ferx - Hahaha, thanks Ferx for the idea, funny enough that very thought crossed my mind, but not about the blood, the fabric. I went back into the fabric and did some folds that aren't really possible and added a pattern feel like that of a flower. The petals of a flower emmerge from a set point but looking at it from outside it just seems like a pattern of overlaps and folds, so I figured I would add that little touch in the large focal area of the image (I changed the texture also for that area)
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and generous comments!:D
Arne (painpainting) - Arne my pal, good to see you. You touched on something that was of concern to me at first, with the blood being a lot more real to life, especially about the edges. You should have seen it before I came to this point I am about to post :D I did take into consideration the fact that some of it would need to conform to the fabric and seem like it's actually soaked in, so I did do that. I then remembered that the feel of graphic expression was lost, something which I wanted to be key in the piece. I don't want it all to be too real because then you end up just relating to the image as a 'scene' instead of an 'expression'. I do agree it is very important for things to read as what they are, so I spend hours pushing and pulling and it's only getting harder as I go (trying to stay true to the feel rather than being taken aside by the look. You know how easy it is for that to happen  ) So I am taking it step by step and not trying to see the end too much (just along for the journey). Your feedback really does help, reminds me to be cautious and aware of what others see too. Great to have you around!
Jeff - Hey Jeff, great to see you dropped by, thanks for the comments! You are right about the heart in that image, I never really paid attention to it knowing it would change later. But the final decided color composition, even though there is a lot of RED, somehow the eye can't help but go right to the blue and the face of the woman (exactly where the eye should be hahaha). So much red and yet it's not the primary focus. I knew I found the balance at that moment. :D Let me know if you agree!
http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/19/14054/14054_1192115872_medium.jpg (http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/19/14054/14054_1192115872_large.jpg)
Finalized color. With all that red my eye still couldn't help but go to the primary focal point(woman and heart). I knew this was where to stop for now with color.
http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/19/14054/14054_1192116845_medium.jpg (http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/19/14054/14054_1192116845_large.jpg)
I decided to change the feel of the fabric in the large focal area, giving it more life. Along with the texture I altered the fabric on a whole to be more like a flower (folds and overlaps emmerge spontaneously from a point). Most noticeable in saturated color areas.
http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/19/14054/14054_1192117127_medium.jpg (http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/19/14054/14054_1192117127_large.jpg)
Refining the fabric to be very smooth further away from the focus and more textured closer to the focus.

Closer view of fabric refinement.
Hey guys! I figured I would share with you the main brush I created for this piece. I made it from the flowers which are key symbols in this work (I just thought it would be cool to use the very thing which is a big part of the artwork to paint it :D).
For those who don't know Painter X well, you can create brushes just like in Photoshop, with the exception that Painter has near limitless customization ability. The easiest way to put it would be that, Photoshop is easier because you don't really have much options, but you in result have to LEARN how to use the brush. With Painter you have so many options it may not seem so easy, but the best part is that you don't have to learn the brush, you TEACH it. So you can customize the brush that it does exactly everything the way you want it done to suit your own way of painting. You could spend an entire day making a brush in Painter. But at the end of the day it's an indispensable asset, which probably only you will fully understand how to use. No custom brush like a Corel Painter brush!:D (I do love photoshop by the way. As I always say... "When in doubt, Photoshop it!")
The brush is made up of a large Gloxinia flower, small patches of Forget-Me-Not flowers and the petals and leaves of the Helitrope flower.
(The brush is responsible for the blood and texture of the fabric, also the backgrounds of the color test variants.)
You are welcome to try it out if you wish in whatever software you fancy!

Thanks for that info about brushes man  , the fabric looks amazing now, you rock!
Martin - Hey Martin, thanks for stopping by! Wow! I can't believe you have never used Painter, you should just go to Corel's wesite and try it out. Believe me you won't regret it. I have been using Photoshop since... forever:D And that darn software can make it seem like nothing else exists, hahaha. Nowadays if I am going to do anything that has nothing to do with photos and image editing, but actual traditional media I go to Painter.
In Painter and Photoshop comparisons, the point about being able to create texture/custom brushes always was a KEY factor in the argument of why Photoshop is so cool to paint with. I always wondered about that because Painter does the EXACT same thing but far better.
But give it a test run Martin, you don't have to like it, but you will!:scream:

hey Kamal, the colors are especially great now and also a big thx for the close up and the explainations on how you`re working
I think the blood is a very important part for the piece as it is loaded with a lot of emotion; right now I think it gets too important, much more than the other subtle elements like the peacefull faces or the new texture on the fabric ;)
keep on the good work

First test on hair. (Painted using a PainterX pattern pen, after making the flower into a pattern)
Hey Kamal, the flower pattern and the colours on it looks reall nice!! ( I'm thinking in a random rotation on the flowers pattern, but no, in this symetrical way the lines of te hair looks well :) )
Nice work my friend !! Cheers!!
Ferx - Thanks for the input! I am still testing different ways to make the hair, but I do like the pattern version quite a bit. I found out that I can't fill the hair out completely because it takes away from the image A LOT! The same way the more I rendered the guy the more he disappeared. That sounds weird, I know! "The more I rendered the more he disappeared" What I mean is that he started to disappear from the meaning and structure of the image as he gained volume (value) and life (color). He started to lose what was working so well with him which was a undeveloped still foundation sketch look which funny enough is exactly what he is; a foundation and support for the woman's happiness. So I cleaned the lines up on the male and left him a bit undone. The same method I will apply to the hair, leaving it graphic rather than rendered because the hair isn't supposed to draw your attention too much. I have figured out methods on how to close this image though so I am working on it. It SEEMS technically simple but it takes SO LONG, actually longer than if I were to just render it all.
I hope to update soon. Thanks for the constant support my friend! As always I wish you all the best!

Hey Kamal, I like the design idea of the hair but like you said it might take more time and composition value in color and detail than what you really want in it, so just let the flow to speak in colors and maybe not so much in the shape...witch is the part that might take you time that wont show that much !:arteest:

Hi, Kamal...
I really touched by ur idea of romance :) . That's a great idea. But i think...since the 'heart' somehow gonna be focus in this, why don't you make it larger...so everyone can look at it clearly. But if you want to pursue the realistic image, the original size of heart doesn't matter :).

Rianti

Hey Kamal, this is looking great. I love the pattern work you're doing and it blends very nicely with the rest of the painting. Your tutorial made me want to learn painter even more. I never used it before and now it's a must! Keep up the good work!
Rianti - Thank you so much Rianti for your critique:D That very same issue was brought up very early in the development by a friend of mine (making the heart bigger). I have made the heart human size but just a little bigger than it should be, not noticeable, but just a little bit in the update. The reason I decided NOT to exaggerate the heart is the exact reason you want me to; it will get more focus. The heart isn't the TRUE focus of the image:) It's surely an important part but not what you will spend your time looking at. I have instead a focal AREA than an actual focal object.
Wow, there is a lot to tell and show, but I need to update! :D I am so happy you stopped by to share your thoughts with me. It is always great to hear concerns of others for my work, it helps me a lot. I really appreciate it.
I love your work very much Rianti, and I wish you all the best in everything you do.

Ferx - Hey Ferx, thanks for stopping by my friend. Thank you for your comments and support. I am happy you like it :bounce: Updates coming soon! :D
Rafael (RafaTer) - Thanks for your comments and critique Rafael, always appreciated :D You have a point on making an image integrate. But in this case I think you will be even more thrown off if you see everything hahaha :scream: There is a very different method I am using to complete this image and you will soon see what I mean. As a WHOLE it comes together great, and the variety of renders give life to each element. I am going for focal renders than making everything feel the same, because they aren't the same. I don't want a 'scene' I want a 'feel'. It has been hard my friend, because it's so much easier to just render everything the same. I never would have thought that, till now, but it's funny how much harder it was for me NOT to render everything and still have things fit and work together in the image. The heart is the most realistic render because amongst everything happening in the image, it is the only realistic element there. Everything else seems so out of normal behavior and more like a dream, so I treat each element for what they represent.
I hope you will enjoy the full image :D Thank you so much for your critique my friend, and another thank you for your generous comments. Yeah I do have quite a bit of refining to do.
Mathias (guterrez) - Hey my friend, great to see you!! Thank you so much for sharing your opinions, you know I love them  I am happy you feel that way about the hair because mystical/dreamy is certainly the feel I wanted. Kamal hair is looking great my friend, a feeling that is both mechanic and organic. Maybe the right side of her face is a little too dark that it looks pitch black in my monitor, unless that's what you are going for. Can't wait to see the full image!...
Jeff - Hey! Good to see you as always! Thanks for that critique on the face because I didn't take that into consideration because I know what's there :D Before I altered the pillow it was a lot more obvious that her face doesn't show since it's almost full profile and it's buried into the pillow. Very great work over here! :buttrock:I really like the graphic interpretation - this way you differ yourself from 'the others'. Also the mood is very 'strange' because of the clean-white-look and the heart.
Great idea and execution! All the best!
Martin (MartinNielsen) - Hey there Martin, great to see you! I am happy you like my heart :D Well there is no quick solution for a fleshy look, except good reference and info. I would recommend Techniques of Neville Page Volume 4: 'Rendering Flesh' DVD from the Gnomon Workshop :) http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/dvds/npa04.html (http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/dvds/npa04.html)
I got to have a look at that so I had a great amount of info and instruction on how to make something look fleshy. I also looked at pictures of hearts, even a live beating one Hahaha
To answer your question...
Painter X has a LOT of tools to choose from that will make it a lot easier to render though, especially with it's very strong blending toolset. Grainy Blender does a good job at blending but keeping the paper texture, so you can have that grain and texture while you blend. I did a lot of glazing and detail airbrushing. I love to glaze with the Digital Watercolor because it is very transparent and does a fantastic glaze because of the wet attribute it has. The watercolor stays wet until you decide to dry it on your canvas so you can mix different hues and values as the paint stays wet, just like real watercolor. You can go wild with it also because it being wet you can use a wet eraser to then erase excess and that wet eraser will not erase anything else but the watercolor because the rest of the canvas is dry. Once you dry the canvas then you will have to use a normal eraser. Also, glazing again over the aleady dried color will obviously make it darker like a 'multipy' blending mode. That Digital Watercolor tool has been a great help, throughout the entire image.
Gijs (Dutchman) - Thank you for your kind words my friend and your support, I am very grateful. I wish you too all the best!

Thanks for your information :)
I know there's no easy way out. The problem for me is though, that when painting that kind of detail i PS, I always end up painting almost at pixel level. Making it look very clean, generic and "computer" like. But your Painter tale sounds indeed interesting, and I will try this software out later. :arteest:
Martin (MartinNielsen) - Hey Martin! I definately understand EXACTLY what you mean. I always have that problem. I have to constantly remind myself that texture texture texture is what counts, not perfect accuracy in order to capture the photo realistic quality of the object. I looked at a lot of photos and tried to figure out what it was that photos have that a paint stroke doesn't. What I came up it was that the photo had a lot of pixel variation and that anything real is quite inconsistent (highly textured, even if you can't notice it). So that is the hardest part I believe, accepting that smooth is not cool :D Not unless it's a machine, and even then machines still have the texture of the tools that produce them. Trying to paint pixel for pixel is something an insane person would do! Leave that to the camera my friend!:scream: It's natural I guess to try and get away from an image looking like a photo, but a little mess and grain adds to the image greatly. (Note: I am not good at it, but I keep trying :) I hate a mess when I know exactly what the end should look like:sad: Love it when I don't! hahaha)
I was once painting a skull and I was so lazy! I wanted it to look as realistic as possible as FAST as possible. I grabbed my Pixel Spray Airbrush and just started spraying. The Pixel Spray is very random and you get VERY TINY pixels that disperse from the nozzle. At first it was just a mess and looked horrible. But after I started painting in the values and everything, the random pixels sure did an amazing job at taking care of the realistic texture feel. All it required was just sucking it up that it sucked at first, and it proved to be a good foundation :D Just know that the messy random grains will add to the quality.
Not that random pixels will make everything look the way you want, but making a mess is good! It only adds to the image when you paint over it with a little transparency. Happy Painting my friend! Always great to chat with you!:bounce:

MartinNielsen (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=169287) -
i've been reading your posts, and I think we have similar problems... One method I discovered is keeping away from the zoom tool! you can try getting used to painting from far away, zooming in very rarely when you really need to nail down a particular detail, and get the tonal values you're after far away with a sloppy brush setting. Once image looks good from far away, usually strokes come out very nicely up close too, then you can edit some of the strokes to give them a more painterly shape up-close...
Basically, I figured that the zoom-in tool is my enemy when I'm trying to paint a stroke driven illustration, unless I use it frequently with the zoom-out tool to compare...
hope this helps..

Many thanks to you both :) It sure helps me alot. I must change my style, because I don't like it that much... If you take a look at this masterpiece from this challenge, I think you all know what I'm talking about:

It just don't get better than this.
Sorry for hijacking your thread, Kamal... :)
Zara (Nemesix) - That makes me happy!!:D
Jeff - Always nice to have you share your experience and knowledge! You know you are always welcome!
Martin ( MartinNielsen) - No problem my friend, hijack as much as you like! You learn, I learn, we all learn. As for painting and anything creative, sometimes you just have to get out of your head about somethings and let the magic happen. Best of all we have a place like this to communicate and learn from each other.

Hey Kamal,
Amazing art and diplomatic networking ability! You present an intriguing contrast between the beautiful women with the fantasy art hair and the medical documentation of the man’s heart. Love the hair effects. Not sure if you should keep the Painter-X interface as part of you work. ;) Hope to see the latest update soon. :D

hi Kamal,
the hair(final right?) and the heart are looking very nice!!Congrats!
Ralph (Korendo) - Hey Ralph, nice to see you!:D Thank you so much for your kind commentary and attention to detail. As for the Painter X screen shots, there will be no more from this point. I took those when I was still working so I didn't have to render out, and it showed what I needed to show. I hope you enjoy the updates! :bounce: Thanks for your support my friend!
Doug - Hey Doug! Yeah that is the final hair, you should have seen the stages it went through, a lot of failed ones; as it was for many things in the image. But failures are what you learn most from, so I am not sad about that :D Thank you so much for the support and encouraging words. I wish you all the best my friend!

Had a change of mind about the hand touching the head of the male. I wanted her to have a more gentle stroking feel instead of the previous quick layout where she just seems to be resting her hand on the head.

Intended flow of image. Using color and texture, this is the basic flow I followed. From the inner most of the swirl outward down to the tail. I wanted first read to be in the swirl area.
http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/19/14054/14054_1193248181_medium.jpg (http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/19/14054/14054_1193248181_large.jpg)
Warm versus Cool, using Asymmetry to pull focus. This is the basic idea behind the use of color in the image. The patch of blue (cool) versus that vast amount of red & orange (warm)automatically pulls eye to the most obvious (lesser used) color temperature. The warm color (heart) sitting on the cool provides another key focus within the main focus (blue).

Finished! The image at FULL Canvas. The crop is the only thing left. Suggestions are more than welcome for this final step. I will upload various crops which you can vote on, or if you have any ideas, feel free to share. There are many ways to crop this image as I have been through several. It will be great to hear what you think and how you would crop this.
I will personally always have this image and crop it however I so choose, but what is the best from a general standpoint is what I am after.
Thanks in advance my friends!

Arne (painpainting) - Thank you so much Arne! I am vary happy you are pleased wth the final image. Thank you so much my friend for everything! I wish you the best in all you do!
Hey Kamal, awesome work my friend! I love the whole composition (and think you dont need to crop :) ) Perhaps a bit colour on the flower texture on the woman arms ( specialy in the left arm) Again, superb work my friend !! Cheers!!
Ferx - Thank you so much Ferx for that input I really needed it. I tried adding color to the flower textures on the woman to see what it would look like, but it was distracting and pulled too much attention even when I had very little. So I removed it and worked on just the impressions.
Hey Kamal, ok, agree with you, maybe then a more shadow on right arm of the woman to gain a bit in volume (IMO, much white on the rim of the right arm and beside to the blanc fabric :) )
Ferx - :D I am happy you feel that way. It means that it worked out well, because I don't want you reading form all the way out there. Form entices the eye, I want your eyes to stay where volume is, so I drown the image and figures in light. Think of it as cropping the image with light. The less form I show is the less you will want to look there, which is also why I didn't let the texture go off to the edge, because then your eyes would go too far from where I really want them :). You made a very good observation:thumbsup:

Hi Kamal,
It has really come a long way, and the composition has a nice balance (and I see the dead guy looks a lot like you?). I do miss the Painter X interface (hee, hee, could enhance the abnormal flavor we are striving for (of course I am kidding)). Maybe a touch of blood on the hand near the heart that is cuddling up with her, those dissections can get messy.
I am glad most of my heartbreaks weren’t so thorough.

FINAL IMAGE: 4566 X 7000 @ 400PPI (28.99cm x 44.45cm) - Portrait
STORY:
A woman finally found that person she was truly in love with. She saw everything that she wanted in him and loved his heart and soul. It all seemed too good to be true, too far from reality. Not only did the woman feel this way but the man too shared such feelings towards her.
But the woman wanted perfection, and alas the man being only human, at times showed his imperfections. Her desire to have perfection and to accept nothing but what she considered to be ‘perfect love’ rendered the woman unsatisfied with even the slightest inconsistency.
The woman figures if she just had the part of him she really loved, his heart, and got rid of the man, the imperfections, then she would be fully happy and forever satisfied. The man loving her so much wants nothing more than to make her fully happy, and thus willingly gives his heart to the woman to fulfill her desires; to give her perfection.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- The subtle smile on the woman’s face is to depict her innermost happiness, a sense of being triumphant and complete. I wanted to depict her as though in a dream in which everything she has ever wanted has been made possible. I tried to stay away from a smile that would make her appear as though she were being devious.
-The male who is covered in his own blood is depicted as being at peace. He is meant to look relaxed and calm as though he was just sleeping. Because he willingly gave his life so she could be fully happy; the aim is to give a sense of him being complete and triumphant, rather than uncomfortable or in any form of distress. The man is placed lower in the composition, but this is not symbolic of lower importance, but to signify that he places the woman above himself.
-The render I chose for the male is meant to build on the relationship between him and the woman. The woman is more developed and taken beyond the sketch and line art stage. The male retains the sketch qualities and line art to keep him as secondary read to the woman, and to symbolize him as being the foundation to the woman’s happiness; relating to the concept of a good sketch being the foundation to developing a great final product.
-I have the woman touching the man gently and intimately stroking him to show her continued love and affection for him. Her hands are stained with blood to show that she had a hand in the ordeal. Partly being symbolic I chose to stain her hand rather than give the blood fluidity in order to have a sense of forever being there with her, something she will carry with her forever. To have given the blood fluidity would have made it appear too much in the moment and temporary. It also would have added a different mood, one which was less sensitive.
-The textured portion of the fabric was done in the large focal area to keep the interest in that area of intimacy. The folds and design of the fabric in the focal/textured area are done in such a way as to seem organic and flower like. I wanted it to appear less like human made material and assume some of the beauty and irregularity in the design of nature; much like the idea of love itself, unexplained, an experience of emotions rather than reason.
-The textures on the man’s face and on the woman’s arms and neck are used to further unite them and also keep the area interesting to view. The textures are that of the flowers which symbolize their relationship.
The flowers being:
Gloxinia – love at first sight (purple, red,)
Heliotrope – Devotion, Eternal Love (purple)
Forget Me Not – Faithful Love, True Love, Memories (blue)
-The colors of the flowers are also what the palette of the piece is based on; the calm and tranquility of the purple blues and the burning passion of the red. The image is not meant to be sad but expressive and energetic.
CLOSING NOTE:
The choice of render for the piece is meant to be expressive and in itself give meaning to each part of the image. The heart is the most detailed and close to realism among everything else within the image because it is the one thing that remains a reality. Amongst all the unbelievable emotions and dream like experience between the lovers, it is the heart which is the clear sign and proof of how far two people willingly went for love, for what they believed to be perfect love. In view of the fact that your heart doesn’t actually mean your literal human heart, it’s amazing what human beings believe and what belief can make them do.

Holy! you really made a LOT of progress! I really really love the image!
Love how you play with the eye of the viewer. Pretty bold (but very skillfully done)to do such a prominent bloodstain on a (near)white sheet while still keeping the focus on the female's face and heart! great job! There's a lot I can learn from you.
The only comment I would have would be on the womans right arm. It seems quite flat. On purpose?
Damn those colors in the sheets shadow's rock! :applause:
DavidSmit - Thanks for stopping by to share all your wonderful thoughts with me David!! :D To answer your question about the right arm... yes I did it that way on purpose. I did it that way to keep the eye from being too attracted outward. You voiced a concern that my friend Ferx also had. After going through my progressions (which you can see in the post after my final image) I noticed that there was a point where I did have more volume on the arm and it worked out quite well. At the time it was certainly too much, but I may just go back and see if I can get a little bit more dark in there nearest to the pillow. Not sure why it wasn't working later on in the image, but if I can make it work now, then I will surely update. Thanks for the comment and question!

After 2 colleagues voiced their concerns to me (Ferx & DavidSmit), I revisted the image and realized that the woman's right arm in fact could certainly use some volume.

Ferx & DavidSmit - Thank you Ferx for voicing your thoughts early on in the challenge about the right arm, and thank you David for bringing it back to my attention. It certainly was a bit underdeveloped. Somehow along the way I lost that ever so slightly needed volume. Thank you guys!

hey Kamal sorry it took me this long to post (this was my 'resume-my-routin' week, wheew)
You came to the challenge and rocked with this image, it has a style of its own and is probably the most white we are gonna see in the contest! and that's something good for the eyes! I liked a lot too all the information about your brushes papers and stuff, it helps for the rest of us who never stop to think about the canvas texture.......
Kudos Kamal! I enjoy this one a lot!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Gabriel (SteevieWoo) - Hey Gabriel!! You don't have to be sorry my friend, I know you have lots to do! It sure is great to see your piece progress. Thank you so much for your very very kind comments Gabriel, it means a lot coming from you. I just remembered that you also use Painter :D Yeah... there are so many things that program can do it can drive you nuts trying to use them all.:argh: But what a beautiful tool it is though. You use it oh so well by the way. Your piece has a true feel of traditional, and that's one of the things I love MOST about it, since the very first time I saw your foundation strokes :D Great to have you stop by my friend! Thank you for all the support you have given me from the start.
Oh... if you wish, you could check out the Corel Painter forum and download my Brush set containing the custom variants I used for this piece.

Excellent final image Kamal! the composition and simplicity definitely make it stand out. The folds on the cloth came out really nice and the color choice is impecable. The explanation is also very good, and it did help explain more of the meaning of the piece. awsome man! I hope you're rewarded for all the hard work...

jpmonroyal - Thank you sou much JP for checking out my work and being so kind as to share your thoughts with me, I greatly appreciate it. Thank you for such thoughtful comments! :D You work is very amazing, I had a great time observing your color and brush work. I am curious... those really nice textures you achieve in your pieces, are they a result from the paper texture in painter, or are they just brushes?
Mathias (guterrez) - Hey Mathias, great to see you!! I bet Tokyo was soooo much fun!! I am glad you like the final my friend, nice to hear your thoughts. Thank you!!

hey, no problem man. The textures are actually scanned images of some canvas and gauze I have lying around. I layer them on top of the image and use different blending modes to achieve a certain texture. At times I also use Photoshop brushes for added texture and grunge..... hope that answers the question. Again, your image rocks!

Hiun: Nice update! Small but it works like a charm!
Now, I really don't have any comments anymore. I'm sorry.. I can't think of any.... I was really trying to find something.... just a little thing... but nothing, everything seems to be there for a reason. And it all adds up. :( It just works. Sorry I can't be more of a nitpicker. ;)
again: Great job my friend!
