hey,one good way for dynamic rope simulation is using Flex modifier,
so take a look at paul's website www.paulneale.com (http://www.paulneale.com/) and there is a lot of usefull tips,
goodluck.

For Maya, the wire deformer tool is pretty good, since it keeps a volume when you stretch it

To give control to the animator, I usually skin the curve to a set of bones, which are controlled by the control curves.

Make sure you over extend the curve beyond the geometry otherwise the ends don't deform nicely and set the "dropOff Distance" to about 10000.

One limitation of the wire deformer is that it start twisting as you try to rotate it upwards. But if you have cylindrical object like a rope that should not be a problem.

Hope that helps

if this is maya then Id strongly recomment using spline Ik with a dynamic curve driving it. with maya unlimited I'd recommend maknig the curve a hair curve. but regular dynamics should work fine too.
