Currently, all weighting is stored in one tag So if you had a car model with tags in different areas, and came back at a later date, not remembering exactly which edges etc. you used to get the weighting in an area, then if you delete the one weight tag, you will lose all your weighting. Even in the areas where you like them.

Is it possible to have a weight tag per weight group , so that every time you weight, a new weight tag is created. That way, if you wanted to redo a section, you could easily delete the given group. without affecting the ones you like, and you also wouldnt have to back track and try to locate the edges used in weighting that area.
A work around is to store each edge, pt, poly selection that you use for weighting and label accordingly, But I was just wondering if this way wouldnt be better.

Any input, How is everyone doing it currently.
Thanks

Hi,

Personally I prefer the "Claude Bonet"-system: use colors to inform you on the weight being applied to certain parts. Of course, you also need numerical feedback: select an edge / polygon / point and have the weight as an attribute.

Adding extra weight tags would be quite messy, in my opinion - it would add clutter to the interface. What I would like, is having separate weight tags for points, poly's and edges. I know they are interrelated, but it would help to have seperate tags.

Cheers,
BaRa

hehe terminology getting confusing here. Bram he's refering to subdivision weighting not vertex weighting.

As for weighting on a car, save selections so you can recal the selectons to edit them. multiple weight tags would be slow, and could cause problems if one point is used in two weighttags :/

So select the edges or points you want to weight, save a selection, then weight them. Then you can recal those selections anytime.

Do know that the new plugin Tagmanager really helps in sorting through all those selection tags too :)

I think it would help if there was an option to display HN weights in color gradations like bone weights or Claude Bonet maps.

agreed.

Excellent suggestions guys,.
Ok , so scrap the multiple weight tags I suggested earlier, and at least have feedback in the Attribute manager and via color coding? That sounds nice.

@Skai: I agree using the selection sets helps.
I hadnt thought about a point included in various groups and weighted as you pointed out, but wouldnt that be mutually exclusive, ie the last weight of a given point would overwrite the previous? Could you elaborate?

Also, when I use the selection set method(which is the method I currently use ), it works fine. The one problem though is that when I select the edges (or pt, or polys) I actually have to drag right and left just to see where I am in terms of how much weight was applied.
So definitely adding feedback in AM would be really beneficial.

Is this kind of fuctionality difficult to implement? I guess the programmers can tell us that.

Thanks for the suggestions.
cheers

no the feedback isn't hard to impliment, even the colour one they could do it pretty easily. Thing is a matter of time. who knows maybe for 8.2 or 8.3/

Edge weighting is a great time saver on complex geometry, but I find it very disapointing in a few areas, firstly as already mentioned there is no feedback on applied weights, secondly when working to a deadline and you rush your modelling if you weight edges prematurely and then change the geometry by adding polygons the edges that you have previously weighted become disrupted and you have to start your weighting from scratch, even saving selections offers little help with this since they become disrupted as well. I would like to two modifications implemented, weight value feedback in colours and numbers, and also for selection and weight tags I would like to see a system like the unique object ID where it would remember the selected edges where ever they appeared in the structure manager and when subdivided it remembers the right components of the whole. This I feel would be a great improvement.
