I am lighting my very first scene. I modeled a doctor's examination room with only one window that is about 4ft by 2 and half feet. The only other light source is a pair of flouresent like lights. I get really deep shadows, I am using basic maya software render, but I guess I need to switch to mental ray. Most of the objects will be textured. I will post a pick later on when I get off work, but I want to have light streaming in through blinds, using Maya 8.5. I heard about using the sun/sky in Mental ray, but not sure of the lighting and direction setup. I have never used anyting but default light for a scene or object and want to start learning how to use light to give more detail.

Thanks in advanced for any help.

In mental ray there's a shader called "glow" from Lume library, you can apply this to the fluorescent lamps. About the color:you can choose from variety of for fluorescent, look in real life or in films - they can be blue, green, pink etc. About the light from the window, you should use direct light type without faloff it it's the sun. Also there must be a light from the sky, which must be maybe half or the sun intensity(color it blue or another sky color). Look on the net for maya lighting room tutorials with mental ray.
But I think you room might be too dark if you use only 2 fluorescent lamps, you could add a lamp with a cone abat-jour. For such a lamp use inverse square falloff, that's how light works, apart from very strong light like the sun or stars. And make its directional parameters hotspot to falloff like 1 to 10 to make it smooth and natural. Or use a photometric light type instead. Use a warm color temperature for this bulb, but doon't oversaturate, from light pink to light yellow is a good range.
For the light coming throughout the windows you could use volumetric light to enhance the dramatism.
And don't forget about dramatic camera position.

Thanks Mister 3D, here is the image I did on my own before I got your message

I'm using Maya 8.5, I tried to use direct light and turned on emit Photons, but it washed out the scene and I only had the photons set to about 15000. I tried an area light directed in from the window and set emit photons to default of 8000, it turned out ok but some areas were to dark.

I would ctiticise now not the lighting, but the concept design. The proportions should be more precise. Place a 2 meters primitive as a human height guiding. You will see that some elements are too small and some are too big or too high. I guess you didn't use reference images when you were creating the scene. Why not to use them? Look http://images.google.com.ua/images?q=surgery+room&svnum=10&um=1&hl=uk&start=18&sa=N&ndsp=18 you can search by another keywords, but you can find a lot of good sources to make your scene more believeable.

Yeah, I had sketched out the room when I got the idea to do, but it was a month later before I started and I lost my sketchs. I also was in several different rooms, the original room I started in was the only one with a window and the smallest. I tried to remember my hieght in relation to the room. I about 6 feet and 8 inchs and about 480 so the room felt small to me. I should have used inches and calculated the room which I think the dimensions where 12ftx8ft. I should have thought it through a little more. Thanks for the advice, I will make sure the next one is more accurate.

Here is a view of the room from a different angle.

Thankyou again for your help, I really appreciate it. I really want to work at becoming a good CG artist.
