There are a couple different schools/colleges in the states I think that have some blender/3D classes that use Blender. Other than that, the main way most people learn Blender is by online tutorials and video tutorials. Search around for greybeard's tutorials, as well as Cogfilms.com. The features page in blender.org as a few good flash videos (that are horribly too big and slow to load...) which show some of the newer features. Also try the wiki's tutorials (wiki.blender.org).

That said, if you learn the principles of 3D using another application at a school near you, you can always translate that knowledge to the Blender interface. (or any program). But you need to learn how the interface works, what it's capable of, and how to do it or find out how to do it.

One of the things i like to do is learn on my own. Blender is a task that i under took for that reason. By doing so i have greatly improved my ability study or learn on my own. Its a thing to keep in mind, though it can run you up the wall at times. Its an other view to your question, out side the fact of money.

Its a little confidence booster at times. It shows you how you learn best in that aspect and how to manage or even teach your self study habits. To learn new resorces and were to find information if you need it.

Just thought i would throw that at you. There are more things that you learn by yourself then in a class room. Still the choice up to, see what other have to say. either way good luck my friend!!!

I'd recommend picking up 'Essential Blender' from the Blender Foundation store and also probably 'Introducing Character Animation with Blender'. That will get you a long ways towards Blender proficiency with very little investment.
