I have finally started on texturing an older model of mine a few of you might recognize him.

here is a refresher for those of you that don't

http://members.shaw.ca/murkworks/content/images/bohboh/boh_dirtA.jpg

here is the first progress on the texturing.

He is supposed to be rubber-esque (rubber not invented yet mind you  ) you have to imagine all his metal internals are oxidizing and it is seeping out all the seams staining and eating away at the surface.

Constructive Crit is always welcome.

Enjoy.

Cool model! I really love the head with these goggles!

Maybe make the shininess more diverse - vary it in places. He is very shiny now, like ceramics. Rubber has a softer feel i think...

Rubber/plastic gets these dark fungus rings when it is kept in wet place for long. The surface would be not so nice and smooth there and thus less shiny.

erik2003: First thanks for the reply. I have been struggling with the shinyness. Rubber has basically the qualities I have given the surface and yet, I too get more old ceramic bathtub than rubber, it is really baking my brain. I am afraid the rust is part of the problem, the rusty bathtub image is very familiar to our eyes.

The fungus idea is a nice suggestion though. I will look into that.

Thanks again.

Oh by the way the forarm has just got the base matierial on it I am more wanting people to focus on the hand.

i think he might be TOO shiny though, if you want him to be plastic. of course depends a little bit on the kind of plastic you have, but i would suggest toning down the speculars a bit..

besides that: great modelling.

I have tweaked the spec a bit. and painted more age wear and bump maps.
Here is the results.

Body is just the base Material right now, and the head is only part of the way done.

But I thought I would share.

04-15-2003, 08:55 PM
Teckniel: Thanks man. I am really anxious to complete it I designed him literally years ago, he then got started and shelved. I myself am really excited to see him this far.

BiTMAP:thanx

Edouard:thanx

stipen:Thanks man. Your site is looking good. I haven't seen it for a while I like your dwelf he cracks me up.

Mattrne:I have been thinking about that, which is a good point by the way, I just don't know quite what that would look like on rubber. The other thing is he (part of story) was basically new and aged in storage (not very air tight storage mind you) over aeons so he would have very little wear of that type. Thanks for your suggestion though and the compliment.

Nice stuff man.

I've found to get best rubber look is to have quite a large specular highlight (3-4 times the size now), but at a very low insensity - looks as if light is diffused by the surface.

buzzlightyr:Thanks

Teckniel:I will try my best. Thanx.

neilmac:I think you have to think more shined up latex. Not so much industrial rubber hose. I do know want you are talking about though. The spec and reflective values are changing as I paint up the age and dirt maps. Thanks for the crit and compliment.

Willem:Thanks man. I likes him shiny. I think I am just going to say he is oiled up, hee hee.

You've raised the bar for me (I wish people would stop doing that)

One silly question :
Why does it have a number one sticker on his head?

Nice job!

Entangle:Thanks for the compliment on the eyes I am really happy about how they are working.

Meka:Thanks

neilmac:I wish I could take the credit for that. The stitches you speak of are unfortunatly compression artifacts. So you are all right the bar is still in the same position. Thanks for the Reply.

Willem:I am going to rig him. He is one of my main characters for my film. I can't wait to do it but, I am also dreading it. I am also trying to keep the pipeline in order, hence I have to finish texturing him first.

yowchuan:Thank you. As for the number that is his denomination for identification. He is a maintenance drone, first of thousands off the line. Things maybe clearer in the update.

Gremlin:Thanks that means alot.

If an one is wondering about the white stuff around the bottom edge it is frost from condensation. He will be leaking coolant through that faulty seal. One last thing the knob things on his shoulders are untextured.

Enjoy.

i really like this new update, the texturing is working really well.
its good you've turned down the highlights. i love the idea he is rubbery with metal inside and the frost is great.
one area that needs a little more attention is around the arm joints; although there is lots of detail on the joint (the running stains) the rims above and below would surely have some of this grease on them when it slighting spilled over. they just look a bit to clean.
other than that i'm very impressed and well done, keep it up! :)

oh and could you give us a little bit of background on him?
:D

so_hi
04-18-2003, 11:56 PM
nerdfiles I actually did nothing to the highlights directly. I have been expanding the age mattes which is effecting the highlights. I will be revisiting the arm textures, I hadn't finalized the look when I did them. It is a very good point about the spillage though. Thanks for the compliment.

As for the background like what?

E.

nerdfiles
04-19-2003, 09:52 AM
you keep saying "he has this...because of this.." like the frost.
and also he is the character in a film you plan to make, and by background i meant sort of a bio on him, what is he for, where is he from.
i'm interested in such a unique character as this.
can't wait for the next update :)

When I first saw him, I thought he was one piece, but I see that you have him in parts. Could you show me where you have him separated? I am just curious. Would also like to see a wireframe if possible. You have his mass down well, the eyes have a nice feel to them in the turnaround. How many lights in the turn around. He is coming along nicely.

Fetus23

Nice model so_hi....I like the idea of a chunky robot! The textures are giving him alot more character....nice and dirty... Keep going in that direction! :D

so_hi

nerdfiles:He is supposed to be a waste management synth one of thousands (garbage collectors). Basically nothing special yet there is something different about him (story point). He is very childlike. He's not stupid just inexperienced. He is found by the other main character in storage almost drained of power. She helps Bohboh to get more power and from then on he follows her around. I really don't want to give to much away though so I hope that is enough. Thanks for your interest.

Michel ROGER:Thanks man. I am impatient too.

PsySpectre: Alright Three.

Entangle: Maybe in few days. I am having some trouble with the lower half of him.

Hickory2.5:I was trying to make him one peice at one time but I broke him up into 7 peices, head, upper torso, lower torso (includes the crotch and upper legs), two arms from above the elbow and the two shins from above the knee. There are two area lights for diffuse and two infinites for spec (helps with calculations). Thanks for the compliment.

Fetus23:Thanks man.

I really haven't been working on him for a long time. I am now working on the scratch layers. I have done the most on the belly lower back and upper legs. I have started on the uppbody mostly around the text. The arms and hands need to be revisited and revised the shins and feet have not been touched.

The specularity is a little too sharp. The reflections resemble plastic more than they do rubber right now.

Remi
05-07-2003, 10:24 PM
Nice work so far only thing I would comment on is the specularity being a little to strong....dull it down a bit...by the looks of your textures he's looking a little beat up....tone those specular highlights down a bit and you're good to go....nice work regardless...keep it up:thumbsup:

so_hi
05-07-2003, 10:34 PM
slaughters and Remi: Thanks for the replies. As for the spec values I have come to terms with his shinyness I like the way he looks in that repect and I am probably going to leave him as is. He is more of a latex than a rubber by the way.

Hope that clears things up for you and puts to bed the spec stuff.

Thanks for the crit though.
