Hello Everyone,

Decided to have the old SB nuked ( thanks RK). If anyone is curious as to the old work, can find the thread at ConceptArt:
AztcFireFlower's Figures 'n' Stuff (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=81093)

Fresh start and newer studies are my intention for this book. Hammering away in an attempt to reach a new level.

Many things, some of them not good, have been happening in my life. This forum and all who visit my SB always help me stay sane. Thanks to everyone for coming to check my book out.

Will start with some master copies of some Chinese master works. These guys are incredible. Will definitely be doing more from time to time.

anandpj Thanks! Your sig statement rings so true at this time in my life.
Womball Aaaaww, I do want to show how my skills have changed, hopefully improved, better skill level. With that aim, I'll re-post some of the older work only to show the progress I've made since my first appearance here.
Hi SpiritDreamer Wouldn't be the same without your support in this here sketchbook. Thanks always for visiting.
Johan So great to feel I belong to this 'lil community of talented artists. Thank you for the welcome.

Okay, I am going to post a few of the older life drawings long poses and quick-sketches, an activity which I am particularly partial to.

I myself am curious to scroll through the old to newer stuff and see how I've incorporated the latest advice from the many talented teachers I've the privilege to study under. Will expand more when I get to post the newer figure studies.

More than 10 years ago, Times i've felt I drew better then than I do now:

Portraits around this period also:
This first one is an example of having just gained more control in my drawings, but now I look at it and it's looking flat in terms of calligraphy. Pencil stroke are there, but don't add that flair of personality to the drawing, THAT"S what I'm working towards! Flair and fresh ease of pencil stroke. Never give up...........

These are better in terms of execution:
http://www.image-upload.net/files/4068/Portraits/Max.jpg
http://www.image-upload.net/files/4068/Portraits/John.jpg
This is one of my favorites, now lost forever, when the school it hung in closed down.

http://www.image-upload.net/files/4068/Portraits/Adi.jpg

This is my all time favorite Portrait. I think this is the pinnacle of all the experience I had in that period. First time I was able to trudge along on my own with minute input from my teacher Mark Westermoe at that time:

More recent, about 3 years ago:
This one was completed in Charles Hu's class a student of Steve Huston.

Hi, fantastic work, great rendering.

I think you had a fantastic style to begin with. Although if you really want to challenge yourself, I think you could try painting figures with a sumi brush and ink. Or with a caligraphy fountain pen. I think you could improve in line weight, but your still leagues ahead of me. Yoshitaka Amano is someone you might want to check out, and Don Hertzfeld. I think a lot can be done with just a well controlled line. Also the drawings are a bit too tight, if you wanted to have a crit on them. I think you should experiment with a less rendered look, like your 10 year old woman image, that's fantastic. A lot is done with little and much thought.

I have been copying studies from this book the last month, you can google his work under Giovanni Civardi. HIs style reminds me of yours, just its more based on crosshatching. The asian man seems to be more crosshatched so, I thought you might be interested.

Thanks to all who offered kind words and thoughts. I do miss my father very much, but, I know there will be a time to remember his love without pain. For now, I will continue forward with my art journey as this loss is dealt with.

So here are some 2 to 3 minute sketches. Am working on simple shapes and am trying to create more flow and fluidity of rythyms AAAACK! Not easy! My tendency is to construct, hence the angles.

This set, I was struggling with a soft pencil that was not conducive to precise control.
My strokes were much rougher, by necessity and frustration.
Why not chuck the offending twig?......'cause I'm cheap.

Hi...AZTEC FIRE FLOWER..:)

Always a real pleasure viewing your thread..Great eye and skill at work..:)
I was just thinking, that if you are going for a more fluid approach,..you might try sitting in a park, mall, or wherever there is a mainstream of people passing by,..and draw them..:) ...This approch was taught to me by a great illustrator named Bill Oakes..he illustrated the Nixon Watergate courtroom hearings, and a bunch of other stuff..He just passed away last year.
But anyway, his approach to drawing was a very fluid one,...his pencil, or whatever medium he chose to work with, would never leave the surface that he was working on, until what he was working on was captured and done...:)
He used to take us down into the busy subway stations, bus stations ect. and have us draw the people going about in their rushed ways...No time for hesatation..after awhile your brain and vision adapts to the motion, and your drawings become, spontanious, fluid, and full of motion,..and accuracy, depending on how much you know your anatomy, which is by far, not a problem in your case..:)
ANYWAY, just thought it worth mentioning this approach to you...Sometimes, it is just a good idea to get out of your comfort zone, when going for something different and new to you.
Challenge is a good thing, and usually leads to good things..:)
Keep posting, and I hope all is well with you and yours, out your way..

voraz Thank you. Lately, I'm putting myself through basic training in drawing skills. The charcoal studies help reinforce the process, BUT, I will definitely continue exploring other media, right now its a bit of oils.
Hey Rebecca No, haven't cruised by the Getty, but checked it out online. Expressive line work to be studied.
Glenn Thank you for your viewpoint and ideas. You are right. I am ina sort of comfort zone. Partly as a cocoon against confidence killers in my art and in my life. But, you can't advance or progress without risk. It's good to try different things. Experiments often bring about key skills.
Thank you for your words and thoughts. I'm hanging in there.
thek Hi, and thank you for your visit. Am settling into a routine where I do certain exercises and master copies of apporaches I like. Never really tried to draw people on he fly. Will be good for me, I'm sure.

Hey Mu, always so kind in your thoughts. What kills me is seeing kids that weren't even born yet, currently with mad skills beyond my exprience! Well, what can ya do. Hope that this time I may complete my goals without anymore lifes hard punches for awhile.
Not wanting to sound wishy washy, just a little down with my situation. It will pass.:)

Hhhmmmm, I realize I have to advance again. Gotten too comfortable within my skill level.....considering where my next instruction is coming from. I'll always train the traditional skills, while trying to enter the field of character design. Something that's always fascinated me. I'll also keep myself open to the gallery and perhaps portrait commission path as I progress in experience. Am rather frustrated and depressed with my circumstances, but I know that this is the norm, gotta stick it out.........just not getting any younger.

Gord-MacDonald Thank you.
anandpg You are too kind.
SpiritDreamer Thank you. I hope this year is a good one for me....

I am currently in an analytical anatomy type quick sketch class that I really love. May be awhile before I post new stuff. There will definitely be a bit of a reworking of my thinking process, incorporating many new concepts and a different approach. I plan to maintain my gestural sweeps as I learn new skills and mental drawing tools.

This is the last of the 2007 quiks. As soon as I have decent work to show, they'll appear.

I love your drawings! I'm a big fan of charcoal, and you are clearly very skilled with it. I admire the way you incorporate gestural strokes with clearly rendered masses - beautiful work.

If you don't mind, could I ask you a little bit about your approach? My problem is my gestures and quicker drawings are a lot more fluid and full of life than my longer poses. With the long ones I get stuck plotting things out... measuring... and they end up dull and stiff. How do you keep that wonderful loose quality you have with your longer poses? Sorry to be so long winded and pepper you with all these questions, but I really love your work!

anandpg, CyborgJA Thank you. Always very glad when you come by to support.
ceruleanvii Thank you for your nice comments.
I also have the same problem with stiffness as a longer drawing gets rendered.
What I have been afviced and found to be true is to exaggerate the initial gesture, more than what you see. Also, egg shapes as gestures over the form to place some of the muscle shapes helps alot towards counteracting the natural solidity that comes with construction and building form over a gesture. This is what I have been excited about as I have experimented and found that this indeed helps to keep the figure a little more fluid.

The 4 drawings were done in Steve Hustons wonderful class. His advice and instruction broke me our of the stiff phase my drawings had existed in for so long.

I've reached a new level with my work that I'm very happy with. Now the next BIG challenge is to invent figures and hands to the same degree of effeciency that is possible with life drawings. The bad thing is you never stop learning.......but, the good thing is you never stop learning. :)

Here are the first in a series of home studies from pics (poor artist, here) where I focus on keeping the gesture as I build up the forms. Roughness is okay with me at this point.
2 things I pursue in my studies, keeping the figure fluid throughout the process and really 3Ding the forms.

anandpg So kind. trying to get motivated to continue my studies. Always a great help to see your support. Thank you.
Johan Thanks for being here and visiting as much as you do. Watching me draw is like watchind paint dry. 90% of the time there would be a giant eraser covering the paper.
Hey Mu Thank you.
Heozart Thanks for comments. constructing is, indeed, the lay-out of the figure.
Usually start with gesture, correct weight balance of the pose you are seeing, proportions. Constructing is then applied to flesh out the figure from the 2D lay-in to the 3D forms. A process, I am still refining as it isn't 2nd nature (I'm lazy).
ceruleanvii You are most welcome. Keep on advancing.

I've been AWOl for a long time. slooooooowwlyyyyyy getting back on track. Sigh, being an adult is hard :D
Responsibility for parent's well-being, AND figuring out my own path...............sometimes not fun.

I miss interacting with the creative community.
Couple of drawings inspired by Body Worlds, here in Los Angeles. I thought I was going to be repulsed, but, I found it actually very fascinating. Displays did not subtract any dignity, in my opinion, of the individual. We were given a glimpse of firsthand visuals and some mechanics for the human body and to me that's just an incredible opportunity.

Here are some studies of the most intriguing to me. Wish I had had more time. I found that immersion into a drawing was very relaxing as well as magnetic because of the subject.
Thanks all for visiting. :)

sanpaiya Thank you. I am trying to put a nice big gap from then and now, but, sigh, the process, is going to take as long as it's going to take. Can push it but you can't force it when your really focused on learning. So, I am making way, in increments.
monicaitt But see, that's why oils are great. You can keep refining without fear of wrecking the paint. ANd, there are stuff to accelerate the drying time.
For me, there is no richness in any other medium using a brush.

aethalin Hey, Thanks for your kind comments. The model for the portrait had a definite Roman/classical character to him. So, I had to draw him. I don't know what I would do without art. Drawing is a passion for me. May your art path be straight and pebbleless. :)
alenah Thank you. Appreciate your words. Maybe at some point I'll post a process.

Here are a few sketches from this week. 3's, 5 minutes. Still working out a process between using as much gesture as well as, as much construction as possible. Keeping the life in your final drawing is the goal. Takes adding more gesture than you actually see and then building on that. As you construct you wind up with a small fight to resist stiffening the figure. It's part of the normal process.

A few more volume studies. I tend to really exaggerate the forms and shadows to define the area in a study. In a complete final drawing, I would probably be much more understated in the muscle separation.

Hi JMART, Why thank you for such high praise. Glad, you can sense all the thinking behind the effort. Thanks for comng by.
collings, Thank you. Construction is very important. I can't build a figure withour a base. I actually like seeing these frameworks in drawings. Gives a unique view into a persons process.
battes812, Thank you for your comments on the lines. It is a discipline to think and act where you want those lines to go.
anandpj What would my thread be without your visits. :)
Hi vikramvr, Thank you. Quite a compliment to see that anatomy is fairly clear in the drawings. If you feel you can learn from them.......

Here are the better ones from this weekend's local workshop.
. Many people, as well as myself, use plumb lines to find the most accurate arch, angle, etc.
I'm remembering THE big shape and negative space to place and space the proportions of whatever pose the figure is in. Much more visual training, but good for the eye/brain and creating efficiency of live model drawing.

Always look forward to your kind words and encouragement. I have been hitting several drawing workshops a week, so I really hope to add many good drawings in the weeks to come. My focus is always on improvement. So, there are things I am working out, and hope in time, the improvement will stay consistent.

Hey Johan,
I'm happy to see you can take something out of my work. The core elements I am developing are dynamics, balance & solid description of the muscles in an aesthetic way.
Means learning the muscles and how they sit on th frame, but, more importantly, how to design the pencil marks to explain it ina fluid, strong, clear way what it is I see.
Thanks always for stopping in. :)

You say that you are looking for a permanent process for drawing.

Eg, what should the initial phase exist of?

Hi Johan, Thanks for coming by, and for the thought-provoking questions and your interest in my direction. :)
Helps me to really define my path clearer.

Among the many goals, one of the important ones, is realism in my work. And in order to do that, I've spent time honing in on construction and learning surface anatomy. Acquiring a basic lay-in understanding of spacing and placing a figure. How to deal with foreshortening, etc. Well, I've spent alot of time on the skill of capturing the model's likeness using these schematics. I've gotten pretty good at it. But, after many years of that, then what, I'm a human Xerox.

I found that what draws me to an artist is that persons view and sensibilities with the instrument of description, oils, watercolor, pencils. So, staying with the media of charcoal pencils in my case, I see there has to be something unique I bring to the depiction.
I've realized it's starts with design.
First, acquiring (and understanding how to use) a set of design elements; tools, and filling my mental library with interesting use of these design elements taken from artists I admire (and boy do I got alot!). Designs that appeal to me or have impressed me in an emotional or graphic way, I must take and stuff in my mental art box for later use. Have a long way to go B4 I have an intuitive grab bag. But, what else do I have but time as I grow older?

My struggle is seeing the design possibilites in my own initial work. And without experience, I can't figure out what to do. Frustrating. Fortunately, both my teachers have pointed us students to the source - Master Copies! :)
Acquire someone else's skllls in design. And create a mental library.

I'm ready for it. Actually painless, but, the important thing is to ask yourself questions and analyze the answers in a particular Master Work.
As my physical trainer has said to me, more than once, do every movement with a purpose. Don't just fly through the motions with momentum, control the movement with awareness.
Because of these exercises, I am, slowy but surely, acquiriing much needed discipline, as well. The more discipline, the faster I'll get better at this. I hope.

This path applies to whatever approach you learn. All the "rules" of constructing and composing a piece remain pretty much the same. Only recently have I become ready to absorb and understand these themes in a deeper way. A small progress I am happy to note.

There are 2 qualities I want my figures to show: Solid construction and beautiful design. What I'm trying to reslve is this. Construction although well done can make for stiff figures. Design without construction leaves figures with no weight, wimpy. There is also graphic 2D design vs volume and my need to retain both in my work. That is a huge resolution of approaches for me, knowing when or how to use those elements together.

Kevin Chen teaches strong strong construction that will leave no doubt in your mind or the viewer's mind, what's going on.
Glen Orbik teaches a method that leans heavier on designing the figure, or anything for that matter, right from the start. Not that it throws construction out the window, but, allows you to use that knowledge, if you have it, to create more design options for yourself. Much is based on rhythms and gesture in your lay-ins to give life to your figures.
Both teachers methods do cross many times in approach, still, it's for me at the end of all this to grab what helps me the best to reach my aesthetic goal from each of my mentors: Beautiful design with solid figure knowledge.
After I finish Kevin's class, I will stay with Glen O's classes, for guidance, as I learn design & pencil mark calligraphy, be that a year or 2. But Kevin's construction won't leave me. That's part of my kit, now.
I must add that Kevin also lectures on composition and design. Extremely knowledgeable and his concept work is awesome.
Glen, he has this amazing sense of design in his portrait sketches that sometimes takes my breath away. There is life in every stroke.
As I am teaching, I really want this degree of skill in design, that I may explain and pass it on to my students, someday.

Hope this dialectic (learned a new word!) hasn't made anyone's eye's bleed. I appreciate the questions and wanted to also try and resolve the conflict of approaches to myself.

Tonik Thank you for checking it out. I have the same feeling about my own path. I have much studying ahead of me. But, that's what gives life some meaning. Life should be filled with discovery and applying some of the neat things we learn to our lives.

Hi Kris, thank you, I appreciate it.

I'm in a transition of tonal type drawings versus line and blocked constructive drawings. Transition consists of designing flow. Clear, clean structure explained with value & edge treatment not line. A lot to experience while not losing what I've adopted from construction class. Construction explains form and mass and planes. Not always an elegant presentation. But, A piece is about design and creating a focus. How to explain structure with value and no hard lines, retaining gesture and rhythms. Not an easy task, but, an engrossing one.

Latest with some tweeks from my instructor.

Hi Esmeralda...:)
Really like this new direction that your heading into.
You might study the works of... Titian..., especally his later works.
When he painted, he never used line, ..he would paint the way you are drawing in this latest direction that your exploring..using color values and rhythms in his strokes, gestures, and most importantly focus...He was one of the greatest masters of the technique of never using line.
Just thought that I would mention him to you, just in case you weren't aware of his lineless technique..:)

Hello Esmeralda,
As usual, your work continues to amaze me.
I was wondering, what size are these longer studies drawn at? Are those charcoal pencil drawings?

When drawing full figures, do you always concider the head/face the main focal point? Does the facial expression have importance to you?

Anyway, you seem to enjoy the creative process, which is what it is all about.
Keep us posted please.

Hi Glenn! Thank you.
I'm now moving out of line depiction to a more tonal description of the figure. In learning about construction, I used line to feel the muscle over the bigger forms as well as to describe a 3d volume.
I love the old Masters. Rembrandt. Caravaggio, Titian, Tiepolo......
Seeing in terms of value only and learning to use washes of tone are going to be a fascinating study for me.
Thanks always for your comments.
Johan Thank you. The drawings are on 18 x 24 sheets of extremely un-archival newsprint paper, but sometimes the whole page isn't used. Charcoal pencil is my medium of choice. I'll learn to use good paper soon.....
Generally I consider the figure as a portrait of the model, so the face is an eventual focal point. As I acquire skill in my marks, the expression will definitely become a powerful element of the image. I think of the Russian Masters Ivan Kromsky & Ilya Repin as a magnificent standard for portraits and the sitters mood. Incredible.
The creative process is wonderful, but every now and then a small acknowledgment from my mentor is a charge to the spirit. This last drawing I've posted has crossed a point of understanding, not just of technique, but of the psychology of fear of messing up. A huge block against producing good work for me. This drawing is a breakthrough for me and my teacher recognized it. It's done wonders for my confidence. You can see it is quite different from the drawings of a couple posts back. Value is now the vehicle of expression. I will probably lose alot of the line and some 3d form (because line's what I used to depict it, and I'm still learning to handle tone), but those elements of 3d and solid forms over forms will re-surface once again in a very clear but subtle way. Anyway, that's my goal.
:)
AmrutRaju Thank you. Appreciated.

killermachine Thank you. I am, indeed, getting just a little more confident with tone and edges. nothing like experience and the tutelage of a master to nudge one along.

Here are a few more.

Beatifull art as always. When i see your drawings, the way you use the pencil...i think (i´m certain) you could achieve amazing paintings using watercolors. In your drawings the lines are precise and the shading style is natural and loose, wich are great skills to aply in watercolors. Well, let me have hopes about you doing some of that in some future.

Cheers.

Hello, I've just spent some time looking at your amazing drawings in large part due to Spiritdreamer's (Glenn's) suggestion.

Your style is amazing and from the beginning of your posts until the most recent ones you are improving!

I'm learning how to draw. As someone who hasn't had much formal training gesture drawing is something I find very difficult right now. It's so important to get the base form correct in order to get a good finished product. Your writing about exaggerating the pose more than it seems is very helpful. I've been going through your unfinished drawings in particular to see how you do it. The way the lines for the limbs go off further than the terminal points at the hands and feet seems like a wonderful way to keep the gesture loose and flowing. These are all things I am going to try and start doing.

Thank you so much for sharing your time and your work!

Hi Glenn, Thank you for those kind and very appreciated words.
Thanks for stopping by and reminding me that I should update this old thread. :]
Hey Tasp,
I totally agree. The first step in a representational figure drawing is to get the lay-in to work. Even with a quick sketch (which necessarily emphasizes the gesture of the moment) structure should be evident. And you hit the nail right on it's specific head. Often to keep the flow moving not just on paper, but through your arm, the end point isn't primarily important. I was taught to seek the simplest shape to explain the pose while the longest line of flow is sought than placed on your page. Generally this is found in the silhouette. As time allows, you add the points of change, like wrist points or indents in the torso for rib and pelvis seperation. Thanks for your comments. I appreciate the visit.
I am moving into new territory - Tone and value as I begin to find and create complete pictures, finished pictures and not just studies. Think I've acquired a good sense of many of the components of figures and now am movingt hrough a thorough exploration of composition of light and dark pattern.

Am slowly bringing around all I've learned and absorbed from all my wonderful teachers.

First 2 incomplete studies of a figure in a fuller value range. Not enough time for a finish.
Am loving this approach! Charcoal as paint!
The last post are head studies pushing design and rhythms.

Kanga Thank you! It's always a challenge, but, as you explore make mistakes you learn. It keeps the brain alive.

Wow! Very inspiring thread!

Your sketches have a very classic illustration feel. Your values are especially dynamic - I think we could all learn from that. Thanks for the kick in the butt!
