View Full Version : mods - any chance of a material sticky
flingster 04-06-2003, 12:08 AM hey guys.
any chance we can have a material presets sticky thread...for those often requested sla or material settings like...chrome, snow, cell-shader, whatever...you know what i mean...that way people can post tips...or can be directed to update thread with tip once completed....waddya think?
thanks

That would be great for me too. That's the sphere of C4D that I most want to learn. The other stickies have been fantastic for me. A materials sticky would be so cool!!

i don't have anything against that, but don't forget we already have Deepshade

Personally I want to avoid having too many stickies, especially since everyone seems to skip the three we ahve and askthings that if they check answers might be available especiually regarding tutorials, someonasks HOW DO I MODEL A CAR? when there are a few tuts on that very subject in the tutorial thread.
if people want it then sure we'll make it, just be wary we already had waaaay to many once.

hey i agree with all your points.
1) the current stickys are working...if someone posts now people generally refer them to the sticky...
2) i don't mean to replace deepshade...its an excellent resource...and a link at the top of the sticky would be useful for it to have...but i'm talking about....say users recommend using say falloff..in a particular setting etc. etc...
3) i agree with not getting bogged down in stickies...its just a pain in the ass...but i do think it would be useful to check other peoples settings on particular materials.
thanks guys...up to you.

Okay here is the thing flingster and other users, how do we set this up. I mean right at the moment we have a great eye shader and good thread on chrome. thing is how do we moderate a shader/material thread, is it just for sharing, how do people comment or critique, be a pain to have to fish through 30 posts for the next shader, then another thirty about that one before the next shader. I would like to do this, get SOC, the eyeball, some of those awesome glass shaders, some of peranders awesome presets all into one thread, butanyone have suggestions on how this should work for new shaders people make.

okay...i'm beginning to agree with you...:wavey:
to hard to manage...it would turn into a mess within a month.
what really bothers me is that all these cool tip/method/workarounds etc all based around one material...say snow...will/have been lost, and every time someone wants to get a method on how this or that material is built...we have to go through the whole process again...only everytime the post request is made...less people participate...the other way you could go to search a listing....but a sticky is probable not the best way to do it.
deepshade does not cover this its a shader resource...but doesn't cover the settings for various materials...just the actual file.
arh well....if i had time a database would be in line me thinks....i'll have a think...thanks anyway guys....just a thought...:wip:

a good example would be this thread.
good chrome
http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=54135
leigh & mjv gave some useful insights into chrome creation...both of which will be lost long term! damn!
then there is this thread also about chrome
http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=49742&highlight=chrome
mdme_sadie talks about fresnel...again...this will be lost..
i don't know what the solution is...but all this knowledge leaking away is well...criminal...INHO...

just so you know deepshade is slowly being redone, don't know when we will see results from this, but a database and such is being set up. I think bhodinut's forum was the shader forum in a lot of ways, but since its gone we lost a lot of great resources. I"ll talk to thirdeye and see what we can come up with.
One thing, personally I think the idea of presets is to look at the settingsand see how they work. I know thats not how a lot if not most users use them, they tend to just apply and maybe change the colour, but really the whole idea is to look at them and expand. For example Squid's awesome eye, I'm trying to tweak to get them even closer to what the pixar eye is.
Hmm just thinking what if whenever a good shader thread is started we add its link to the Sticky shader thread. so I could got through collect all the links to say the chrome examples, the eye one, the various celshading ones, and make it a sort of material reference link resource. :/ Dunno, I see the use of it, just how to impliment it oner problem with the tips and tricks thread as I see it is the mix up of questions and comments inside it.

cool, whatever is good.
i would have no probs if only mods could post to it...that way you guys keep control...
i know deepshade is being redone...but my impression was a database around the files...more so people could upload themselves...
yup we should look at settings and there control/usage....but come on we are users....and sometime these discussion bring us stuff we didn't cover...or even try.
(then again people could just search...!:bounce:
i'll leave it with ya...thanks again.:buttrock:
Have to agree with the direction ya'll are headed. I know it's more work for the moderators, but I think it would be great to have a sticky that only mods could access. Whenever a thread came up with good discussion of material, could slap a link in the sticky. Then you get the benefit of the full discussion... Seems like the best solution under the circumstances, IF the mods can afford the extra time...

very well then, not ure how to limit it only to mods, I"ll look into that but I"ll set it up and then tomorrow I"ll start gathering old lonks, anyone that knows one off hand can pm or mail me and I"ll add them to the list.

consider it done and open to the public
I have made it possible to add your own links rather than limit, I will delete not related posts, and those containing no links. want it clean and easy

I've got nothing against a shader sticky, but as far as knowledge leaking away, it's a good idea to keep a clip file of all the posts that you find helpful. I use a little program called Clipmate that's great for this. It replaces the Windows clipboard and it lets you set up different folders that you can clip into. That way you have a permanent, easy-to-access list of tips and tricks. Just a thought.
