View Full Version : light & volumetrics problems

Hi there!

I'm right now working on my try of the lighting challenge #8, haunted hallway and after setting up the lights and basic texturing i started doing a volumetric light which enters by the hollow of the window (i cleared the 2 lateral windows in my scene).
And after trying, changing, testing lots of things i'm still at the same point: the volumetric seems to go through the column, but not affecting it: if at least it makes some shadowing on the wall, i could use it but as is, it isnt.
The other issue i do have is that the volumetric DOES NOT ONLY enter by the hollow of the window, but does all around its angle or cone angle: isnt it supposed to be a volumetric light?¿?

Here are some test renders only with that light on, no objetcs excluded for this light, i've tried it with shadow map, raytrace, different texturing, etc etc.

Dunno what's wrong and i would appreciate your help cause it's driving me crazy, thanks in advance!

We can't access through your ftp without login and password. You need to link to your images differently (via http/www). I cleaned them up for you. Hope you don't mind.

I'm no expert in this field. But do you have the Raytrace Shadows flag on? Are you using the right kind of light?

thanks evenflcw, i forgot to edit the links :P

and...yes raytrace shadows are active and this light's a spot so it's supposed to work fine with volumetrics

i tested lights in another scene with a box with a hollow, and they worked fine, they only illuminated the "real" light that was supposed to enter by that hollow, so at this point i'm more confused than before, that even without volumetrics that light goes trough my walls no matter the light type.

The difference between the 2 scenes are just than in the one i just did, the model was modelled in lw and in the other case i don't know but maybe it has some maya data (or other 3d app) becausa of the challenge and that may be doing some crazyness (i did clean up the model, merge points, eliminate some double polys...it seems ok for me)...

Im gonna try to do the model myself and see if the lights react the same, let's see...

after making another object, sending to layout and see the light was reacting exactly the same as before...in the middle of desperation.... i added a spotlight, placed it in the same position and with similar values, cleared up all the lights, press f9 and voilà!!! the right things happens, so dunno why or how but that light is wrong. if anybody figures out, let me know... gonna finish that scene now that i can :))))
