View Full Version : Sketchbook Thread of Iuvo
Hello everyone!
I'm Nikoline, 21 years old and I live in Denmark. I've recently come to the conclusion that in order to get anywhere with my drawing I need to limit my studying to one (or maybe two) subjects instead of just doing random studies.
I've decided to focus on human anatomy, and started doing the "50 heads" exercise. I won't be able to do them in one month but I'm doing two every day I have time to draw, and I can already see great improvements in my other sketches, especially in expressions.
What else is there to say? I'm very serious with my work and I'm therefore very interested in getting critisism. Another thing I'm struggling with is composition so any advice regarding that on the finished pieces I post is very welcome! I hope to become active in the community and I will offer my advice any time I feel I can.

Hi ...Nikoline ...:)
FANTASTIC START on your thread ...
Dynamic lighting on that last demon piece..:applause:
A black background might add to the drama, and make the main interest of the piece jump right out of the canvas at the viewer..just a passing thought..:)
REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING MORE OF YOUR WORKS, AND PROGRESS ...

Wow I didn't expect to find som many replies, thank you all for taking the time to look at my work..
SpiritDreamer: Thank you for commenting! Perhaps you are right about the background.. I actually originally painted it black - Maybe I'll go back to that version some time..
Auria: Thanks very much for your encouraging words!
NR43: Thank you :) 2004-2005 is when I went from scribbling "floating heads" on white paper to starting doing studies of anatomy and colours.. So I've been working seriously on it for 3 years.
batte812: Thank you very much!
lildragon: I wish the future would come sooner :) Thanks alot.
Update: I did the next batch in pen and ballpoint pen because I was a bit sick of working on the computer after doing the "Shadow Demon" pic. It actually feels like I'm learning more from doing the studies in pen because I have to think about every stroke I lay down.(Even though the results are not as accurate) It's also way faster but perhaps not as interesting to look at.

Hi ..Nikoline ..:)
Nice pen and ink drawings..
Burne Hogarth has some great books that you might check out..DRAWING THE HUMAN HEAD, DYNAMIC FIGURE DRAWING, DRAWING DYNAMIC HANDS, DYNAMIC LIGHT AND SHADE, DYNAMIC WRINKLES AND DRAPERY...They are all great books, and will really help you in your studies..:)
On composition...take and analize old master works..forget about the images,..Just look at the ABSTRACT SHAPES/POSITIVE SPACE that creat the images, and the ABSTRACT SHAPES that are created surounding the images NEGITIVE SPACE...how they creat a flow/direction...How those SHAPES are repeated in different areas, acting like wieghts to create perfect ballance...equal wieght distrubution creates stability/no motion,..unequal wieght distrubution creates motion.
The same princables apply to the lighting in composition also.
Study the way the old masters use lighting to achieve and enhance the the flow/diection in their composition.Light and dark have wieght also.
The more you analize the composition of the old master works, the more you will see composition at work..:)
Hope that helps some ..:)
Keep going...a real pleasure seeing your work progress..

Thank you Glenn. That sounds like very good advice to me.. and makes a lot of sense. Thank you for giving me something concrete to work on with composition - Great to know how to study it. And I'll have to give those books a look.
Hopefully I shall get to it before long. I haven't been very active due to a lot of things going on here, moving to a new place etc. I did have time to do a small fun thing for the Daily Sketch, ("Wonder Woman") just to keep drawing even though I'm busy..
I used lots of refs with it, different for legs, hands, hair, did the torso without ref as well as the face. I think it turned out okay, maybe it lacks a little more interest of some sort..
http://theisel.dk/iuvo-art/wonderwoman.jpg
Back from my holiday.. Just a few sketches to show I am alive. These are fast anatomy studies, probably 15 mins each. I tried out painter (Essentials) for this - I still find it rather hard to work with.
http://www.theisel.dk/3stk.jpg
Here's a WIP for the Daily sketch: "Blond". I went for exagerated anatomy on purpose, I'm not sure how it's working. I used a ref for the original proportions. Just an idea.
http://www.theisel.dk/web.jpg
Hey, why haven't I never stopped here? Did see the heads, but the new stuff is neat too, hehe. Uuh, the pen studies must be hard to do, I mean there's no erasing possible, but a very good practise as I was told. Though never picked a pen to draw. Not confident enough I guess.
Wonder woman's feet look strange. Kind of like she has hooves. I like that you've done her with a skirt, not just a tight costume we see everywhere on those superheroes.
Keep going!

sorry double post
Elnaz: Hey! Heh thanks for the encouragement... And I'm glad you like the hands .. They were killer to do.. ;)
razz: Thanks for stopping by :) Pen studies are good. I recommend them because you really have to think about what you're doing.. And if you don't like the results.. Well.. It's just a sketch!
Yeah feet.. I've got to get working on those. I'm glad you like the dress. Thanks for the comment!
Here's one more head from me. Heard somewhere that you learn more if you repeat the exercize.. I think I did. The values on the first one is better (I did the second as a pen sketch) But I think I caught the angle of the face better on the second attempt. Neither are quite there yet. Ah.. heads are hard..

Hi...Nikoline..:)
Nice wonderwoman... ...On the feet/boots, you might try drawing an arched curve,a C shape standing on it's ends, where her ankle rest on top of her foot...same thing, but lesser of an angle on the front of her boots, where her toes are...this should give them the right perspective, and make them seem as though they are coming towards the viewer...also you might want to give an indication of ankle bones...make the outside bone lower than the inside bone..:)
I like that last ink drawing...came out nice...:applause:
REALLY looking forward to seeing more of your work, and progress...

Hello Glenn :) Thanks for the critique, you've helped me a lot.
Well I realized that I didn't know much about drawing feet so I did a lot of studies and tried to rework Wonder Woman's feet. One is supposed to be heel down, other is supposed to be standing on the toes. I'm not totally satisfied with it, but I think I'll move on to other things now (Hey, who knew feet were that much fun to draw? Also there's really a big difference between people's feet. How pronounced their bones are, the shape of the toes..) This thread is great for giving me motivation to improve..

Wow, super nice sketchbook this! :bounce: I really like your headstudies, feet studies, all of it actually.. :)
About that supergirl character of yours, maybe you could add an interesting background? Perhaps a crowd cheering on her after she saved that little girl from getting hit by a semi-truck. Or maybe she just killed a resurrected, frankensteined dinosaur which rampaged downtown Copenhagen? I'm rambling aren't I? ... sorry ...
Well, keep going!
Thanks vaaken - great inspirations hehe. I might do something like that, you know we never see Copenhagen as a motive it's alway NY or something.
Okay, so I haven't gotten much done lately, being pretty busy and all, moving and family stuff. I also haven't commented on other people's galleries as often as I would have liked, but hopefully it'll all lighten up for me in a couple of months..
I did this as sort of a skin-tone experiment. I reffed some parts from looking in a mirror so it looks sort of like an older version of myself.
http://www.theisel.dk/iuvo-art/upld.jpg
Here's a pic I'm working on for a friend of his World of Warcraft character. It's pretty much just sketched out. There will be more lighting from the left on the succubus. I think the composition may be a bit over the place but I'm trying to focus it with the lighting.

Thanks for looking
More work on compostition. I'm trying to use the light to guide the eye. Plus I changed her pose to something more interesting.

Great skin tone study! A self portrait in skin and flesh. Original. :)
Coming along good this last one. Cool to see how things evolve. I'm curious about how that thing in the background will turn out. Time will show I guess. :)
An idea for the hand holding the flame: What about making that flame shine through the hand revealing the bones and blood in the hand? Making the hand appear red/orange? Could be added as an subtle effect?
Keep up!!
Hey vaaken :) - Thanks for the input. That's actually a really good idea for the hand, might get me motivated to work some more on that piece.
I've been in kind of a slump lately - Then suddenly managed to whip out a self-portrait for the Daily sketch (one that actually resembles me hehe)
http://www.theisel.dk/iuvo-art/mefin3.jpg
New stuff ..
playing with skin colour..
http://www.theisel.dk/iuvo-art/2267.jpg
http://www.theisel.dk/iuvo-art/2255.jpg
also a daily sketch (golden dragon) ref used for pose, also tried "inventing" the skin colours in this.
http://www.theisel.dk/sdcfin.jpg
Did some more work on this..
http://www.theisel.dk/6lightuplnew.jpg
Gave him armor on his shoulders - was hard to design something that wouldn't block the view of the girl and I'm not sure I got the angle right.
I'm not totally happy with the composition - and I have the same old problem: too much light/details/contrast attracting the eye, even though I try to cut down on it and only use it where it's important. I can't seem to resist putting detail in - I think the shoulders are overpowering atm.
Thank you for looking and thank you again to those who have already commented..
Excellent studies here, I really admire the way you can quickly knock up these sketches and then turn them into these intense studies! I'm really liking all of them but I especially like the way your 'Golden Dragon' sketch turned out - the skintones might be made up but I think it looks great.
In case you're looking for skintone inspiration, there's an article on skintones in last month's ImagineFX magazine by the incredibly talented Marta Dahlig - might be worth a look for some more study!
I would get rid of the shoulder armour and add more detail to the anatomy.
Getting some ref for his arm and hand would be a good choice I think.
Also, I think the horns are too big for the female. Giving her a ribcage will make her look very sexy in this pose.
Your colors are really nice. Don't be afraid to push them further in the area closer to the fire.
It's digital... save a lot and experiment ;)
This painting has got so much potential I really hope you will go all the way with it.
The studies in your previous post all have really nice skintones but the anatomy needs work.
If you can, squeeze in a few torso, arm and hand studies.
 :bounce:
edit: oh and don't let my crits discourage you. I think you're doing great! Keep drawing!
thek: Thank you! I will definitely look up that article. And thanks a lot for commenting - It's nice to know you are on the right track..
NR43: Awesome crits! That was exactly what I needed - Thanks for looking at this with fresh eyes. I really want to push this picture as well, but was getting blind to my mistakes..
I've shot some reference pics for the poses and did some redlines to work from. I think they look better like this, only remaining problems are that my model for the pose is a bit too buff for the skinny guy I'm trying to paint here, and I'm not sure about the woman's pose yet - I can see your point about the ribcage, but am finding it hard to correct. I need to do more studies as you said - so much to learn so little time.. ;)
Great that you like the colours - When I've got the anatomy down I'll experiment a bit more..
The arm is closer to us in the picture, but I think it somehow looks wrong that it's so big. I might do somthing about that later as I've learned that you shouldn't trust photos entirely..
I've changed the angle of it, so it's actually closer to what I originally wanted.
Thanks for the crits again- It's a great motivation to get better...

I'm still alive - I'm in the middle of moving to a new house right now - Not much time to paint. But here are some quick studies
http://www.theisel.dk/iuvo-art/man1.jpg
http://www.theisel.dk/iuvo-art/aj.jpg
here's an update on the pic. Sometimes it feels more like I'm just moving things or changing them and not really making it better. The green lines are there to show the things I haven't changed yet. Will play with colour when I get the figures down. I'm finding the hat really tricky to get in perspective - will it ever get done?
http://www.theisel.dk/iuvo-art/8upl.jpg
Hello. I've been busy - getting through exams and a member of my family (not my closest family) is seriously ill, unfortunately. I'm still working on my drawing skills on and off though - it helps to put my mind off things :)
studies (sorry they're kind of bland)

a somewhat failed attempt at doing good anatomy from imagination. More practise ahead.. :)
