I posted a question about this in the XSI forum and got a wee bit of feedback but was hoping I could get more by going straight to the source as it were for texturing.

I'm using XSI and I have a creature, actually the one I wasn't able to get finished for the Lord of the Rings challenge. Anyways, I am "finished" modeling him and wanted to move onto texturing.

I have watched a tutorial I have from XSI on using their texture editor and they use an image that already has all the parts of the body spread out. I don't see how I could make an image with all his parts without know where those parts are, so, am I to unwrap first or attempt the texturing?

btw, here's an image of my guy so you can see what i'm going to ask about next...

So for blending between his lower body and his upper body I have seen tutorials blending two things together but with blending his arms it becomes a bit more difficult...or then maybe not and I'm doing it wrong :D
An example tutorial of xsi blending two images is at

Thanks for any and all help,

Ok, read over Leigh's helpful primer on texturing and ran across something that pretty much sums up what I thought. It answers my question somewhat. She says basically to have a base color that'll show through that way the seems aren't so noticable. I think I'll be able to do that for his upper body but not sure about the blend midrange part.

i guess you want to know how to start while you have nothing, no guide, you have no way to start UV unwrap nor painting in photoshop.

here is what i do: i render a front side and a right side of my character. and use it as a guide to do the uv. once you have your UV is set. It is very easy to paint the textures in photoshop.

Don't try to make everything attach together in the UV. You must brick it down into sections.
