Very great, looks like a photo. Did you all parts in lightwave?

Thanks! No, it's all Lightwave, (the moon's texture-map inspired by USGS Selenography,) with Layers tweaked a bit in Compositing. Two different kinds of grasses were made, then distributed with HD_Instance. Everything else was modeled by hand.

The trippy thing is to have actually been there, standing on the runners of a dogsled, knowing that the place I had to get to was somewhere beyond the edge of the mountain. It felt so much like being on another planet, with not another living human being around for about sixty miles in any direction.

very nice, it looks perfect. Is it possible to get a nice high-res version of this?

Thanks!

There is, but since I'm making my living currently as a "Fine Artist," selling prints of these works, (which is slightly more profitable than being an author, believe it or not,) I can't really post it. (I'm sure you understand.) I'm selling 18"x24" Art-Prints of the works insanely-cheap though, ($35 for most pieces,) so if you'd like to see the 6400 x 3200 image, just let me know and I'll have a print on its way! :)

Yep, I was there. Inspired from a solo mushing trip to see my friend who lives on Chandalar Lake. It's in the Brooks Range, (though the mountain here looks suspiciously like Denali,) just south of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

On another Thread someone asked, "Why Alaska?" This is why.

Looks cold and unforgiving :)
Nicely done :D Some clouds would have looked cool as well, but the clear sky looks great anyway

Very nice, would look great as an animation with the vegetation blowing in the wind.

Thanks everyone! :)

Something I never realized until I moved up here two years ago is that when it gets really cold, below ten below F, the air is incredibly dry. (Many people wear felt shoes up here because the snow and everything is dry as dust, until spring thaws - which should be in about a week or a month or so :P )

At -20 F, no clouds no snow, no breath hanging in the air, and exposed skin can freeze in minutes... (though "Ice Fog" can happen with "Temperature Inversions" in "the flats")

At -40 F, (which is the same temp. as in C,) a cup of boiling water thrown in the air evaporates before it hits the ground, car tires freeze with "flat" spots in them and your car/truck goes "kathunkety-kathunk" driving down the road until your tires thaw enough to become round again...

At -50, heating oil can gel if you don't have a special additive to it or the tank is well insulated.

Here in Fairbanks/Salcha, those temperatures are without wind. Up in the Brooks Range, I was mushing through some areas at night where snow was blowing so hard I couldn't see past my "Wheel" dogs right in front of the sled...

Tim

've actually got a short story written about the adventure, available in its entirety from the "Books" section of my website... And yes, it is all true.

wow..such a peaceful landscape...:)

everything looks SO real..buuut......erm..is the snow supposed to look a little grainy, or is it the file type?

man...I love this type of thing...just not the cold tho, lol...

~Solarix

reminds of the snowstorm we had today....it's April..but still snow...and I live in Notrthern NJ...:surprised

is it just me or is the moon a little on the big side?

Pushing things to make a "comment" _about_ the experience, rather than trying to "re-create" "Reality." It's what "Fine Art" is all about! Everything comes togeher to paint an _Emotion_ within the viewer! (The media is simply the "carrier wave.")

Re-creating "Reaily" is good practice to make sure you've got your "chops," then... it is letting others share what _you feel_ from the experience, and your tools are more than just your ability to render. Your main Tools are in accentuating certain things, blending others, clarity, grain, blur, color shifts... it is what builds the connection with the dreamlike worlds within the Subconscious...

These are the Tools an Artist has to truly make an impact on the world(s) s/he touches. Using these tools we can let others experience within them things they've not yet dared to touch within themselves... and in so doing, we make a positive and lasting imprint on the Worlds within which we live.

Looks amazing.

It's been my lifelong dream to someday get up to Alaska. Just the thought of it brings a smile.

Anyway, really well done...I'm sure it will sell.

Congrats.
