Hi Everyone,

This is my first post here. My name is Boston Dell-Vandenberg, I'm an 18yr old high school student in Toronto, Ontario and been doing 3D for about 2yrs now.

I've been reluctant to post any of my work because everyone else's is so great:thumbsup: But I've finally created something that I'm pretty happy with which I can show to the world:D

This is an animation I created in Maya for a school project. It's called Grandpa and the Wasp. I'd welcome any comments or critiques to my video.

Not bad bostondv. One maybe 2 major complaints.

I liked the video, no doubt, but i felt like there was a head floating around in there. I needed to see more of his body, maybe change up some angles of the camera a few times and see what kind of effect arises from that.

Secondly, the enviroment, i'm just not really feeling it...having a bee/wasp inside and auditorium, know what i mean? Maybe pop old gran' pa on the porch sitting in a rocking chair.

But good job over all!

Ok I tried to download the animation but it just wouldn't go so i will comment on the image. The chin and nose are nice however if you are trying for a "realistic" model you have to make the upper lip fuller and to fix the rounding at the edges of the mouth you can try moveing two points really close together. In order to make the eyesocket you just have to model the upper and lower eyelids.

To have a realistic eye you realy need to model it, in order to get the proper spec hit and reflection.

Having said all that it just applies if you want a realistic character.

I am a little confused by the style of your model because the eyebrows, pointy head, and the eyeballs lend to a cartoony character but the rest of the face lends itself to a characture.

Nice work for highschool, I can remember what I did back then and, well, lets just say your work is better :)

Hope this helps.

Out,
Don

thanks guys!

I like your suggestions Superfly. Maybe I can re-make it in the future:)

I would have liked to create a full body character but this was my first major character animation and I wanted be sure I could complete it in the time I had. Because I decided to just create the head I tried a puppet-like feeling, hence the theatre and the floaty feeling...

But I really like the idea of gran' pa sitting on his porch in a rocking chair:) would definitely enhance the story!

In the future I'll definitely be animating full bodied characters!

dbach, I think the problem your having with the video is that it doesn't show until it's totally downloaded. (it's about 7mb and can take awhile) In quicktime, I haven't been able to figure out how to get it to show the video, so you can watch as it's loading... If anyone knows how to do this with quicktime files plz let me know.

As for grandpa, I was aiming for a cartoony look... but thank you for your advice:) I find the eye sockets hardest to model... I have made a couple attempts at realism, but haven't made anything worth showing yet:P
