View Full Version : Scroll Wheel plugin for Maya (?)
Sammy 04-05-2003, 02:48 AM perhaps I'm the only one that prays for this functionality with Maya ... (snif, snif)

What exactly do you mean?
Sammy

scroll wheel zoom - if WinAmp can program it into it's volume control, surely AliasWavefront can engineer it to operate the zoom on cameras and viewports ...

You want do something like the plugin to have Internet Explorer in Maya with Winamp?

I'd like to be able to use the mousewheel to act as a zoom tool for the viewports/cameras instead of MM+LMB+Alt drag ... methinks maya doesn't support this at the moment (?)
-Sammy
personally I'd like the scroll wheel to actually work in maya...
i.e. in my outliner when there's a big list of stuff, instead of having to click on the scroll bar, I'd rather just use the mouse wheel.... but noooo, they make me be un-lazy...

my only regret is that I didn't continue studying C++ in high school in favor of playing with charcoal more
... it would seem to me that there's a library file, a .dll file that would bring mousewheel functionality to maya. Perhaps that's too lamen.
Just a tiny squeak ...
and speaking of squeaks, if someone could tell me how to remove the 'click' sound from my mouse? :D

Ive used scroll wheels in Maya with success, the secret is you have to have the UI window active, and often times you must have the mouse pointer over the scroll bar area. Try it, it should work. As for the Scroll wheel working as a zoom, it sounds like a cool idea, but the I'm so used to the origianl way that it might be annoying if Maya built that into their functionality.

umm. in maya you can zoom by using alt+right click. :) no need to hold 2 buttons down.

but tell me what is the point to use the scroll when u are allready over the scroll bar. A|W should definatly do something with the scroller and also let u scroll in windows. I am constantly trying to scroll in scrollable windows in maya with the scroll whell.
they should also let u change it from being alt to something else. wouldn't that be nice if it was the MMB in stead of alt then u dont even need to use the keyboad sometimes.
I ways mix up the hotkeys(kinda) between windows and Maya.
like sometimes I will use the MMB to try and move stuff around on my desktop or i will do shift z or z to redo and undo things. and sometime I will try and activate the hot box in other windows apps and cuss out the program for not working right until I figure out that my brain is the one that is doing the "not f%$#ing working"
has this ever happend to any of u people here or am I just a hopeless low I.Q.(below 10) supreme moron.

no I do the same thing, especially dragging things with the MMB. The hotkeys are slightly confusing as Maya comes from an IRIX background.

:) Scrubbing in the timeline with the MMB scroll would be much cooler. (Maybe by defined increments)
You could also hold down the shift key while scrolling to go to the nexy/previous key.
I started a thread at 3dbuzz where I offered this idea to any coder. But only one guy responded.
Hope somebody here finds it interesting enough to implement this for all maya users.

i would like to use the MMB scroll to change between the manipulator tools (move, scale, rotate ect...) the MMB scroll is what i use in video games to change weapons, so using it to change my maya "weapons" would be cool,

I find QWERTY much more usefull and just as fast(minus the Y).

I didn't know what UI was until I used Maya's QWERT keys:)

it would be cool if you hold down the MMB and click the LMB to go back a frame, RMB to go forward a frame, and hold to play back or forwards.
I think maya's UI is the best out there.

Why minus the Y ?
It's as important as the rest.

the function of Y might be useful. but its positioning might not be the best for every type of keyboard..

QWERT are the select, move, rotate, scale, everything keys. Y doesnt have anything to do with moving stuff around.

But "Y" is selecting the last tool used, it's very helpful when making skeletons, or splitting faces with the poly modeling tools, things like that.
btw, Ambient, I can see your point, that doesn't look too helpful for Maya, only for code and Word.

This whole thing with the mouse wheel is silly. 3DS max uses a mouse wheel for zoom, I thought it was annoying. You do use the mouse wheel for selecting and it has other advanced functions.

I like the idea of the mouse wheel as an animation scrubber. I'm gonna see if I can find someone to make that happen.

just in case:
you can scrub with the 'k' button. not as spiffy as being able to scroll w/ the wheel but it does act as a safety. :)

I like Maya's default setup better , Holding "k" and scrubbing left or right.
I find I can do a slow motion scrub better for longer than if I were to use the mousewheel.

y is still usefull even if you have one of those keyboards.
too bad they excluded the "draw your own selection" tool.
it is really anoying when you need to use it and have to reinable the bar on the side to use it.
