View Full Version : help w/ gold shader
Slythis 09-19-2007, 04:53 PM I'm having some difficulty re-creating a polished gold effect in a shader in Maya(v.6)
currently i'm using an anisitropic(sp?) shader with and increased spec, and colors accordingly set. Is there a better way, or perhaps does anyone know of a tutorial to help out?
I'm more of a modeller and i'm trying to get better at texturing surfaces using shaders, so i'm pretty devoid in this area, any help would be greatly appreciated.

A very basic polished gold material can be made with a fully reflective shader, no diffuse, no spec. Set the reflection colour to RGB(205,174,94).
If you can't set the reflection colour properly then set the reflection amount to 100%, then multiply the output of that shader with the same RGB colour posted above.
As it's reflective make sure the object has something to reflect.
Of course this can be made a bit more realistic (and complicated) by mixing in a bit of diffuse or blurry reflection here and there. Or a very subtle bump effect. Or see if you can find a shader which allows input of measured reflectance data to get the reflection correct at all angles.

Fully reflective shader? not sure quite what your talking about...like i said, i'm a bit devoid in this area...i'm basically familiar with Maya's standard shader set, and how to generally manipulate them.
thanks, for the assistance though, it definately is appreciated. I'm gonna research a reflective shader now though and see if i can make some head way

awesome...worked great, thanks a bunch friend. I knew exactly what you were talking about, it just took me looking in the menus to figure it out haha
