well luckily your near toronto, try being an animator In Edmonton, I"m so removed form the ndustry right now. Curious are you planning on taking 3D after the classical program at Sheridan? Classical is a super tight market at the moment.

Kaiskai:

Hey. Well I just live near toronto when im at school.. During summer time i go back home to ottawa. Theres lots of animation studios in Ottawa which is good but everything is Tv production. After im done classical animation I dont know what i want to do. Maybe concept art , childrens books , character design , Game designing , storyboarding, animation Possibilities are endless when you study classical animation. Im Not SURE if i want to take computer animation. Next year the program at sheridan is changing into a degree program so its going to be 4 years long and well the will include computer animation in the program as well ( just computer animation NO modelling. Models will be provided) Unfortunatly i will not be able to get into the degree program UNLESS i drop out now and restart first year OR i finish my 3 years here and I wait a year then come back. Which would be a total waste of time. Anyways If I do want to learn computer animation / modelling/ texture i would teach myself. Animation on computer wouldnt be as hard to go from a classicly trained background. Same principles same physics. Only difference is that your on a computer and you dont have to worry about getting your animations on model. Just need to worry about getting your movement right . hehe =)

Hopefully this summer i can get somekind of art gig. BUt thats not for sure.
What you up too? id love to see your stuff

Heres some more images if anyone is interested

Hah Hey thanx man. Hey i saw your webpage GREAT final movie i love it. the whole idea.. hehe Genius.
Front PAGE I wish... I dont think many people are into this type of stuff around here.. mostly cg stuff and or fantasy paintings that go up... But it would be great if it did either way. Or maybe its because not many people check out the concept gallery.

Hey buddy!

First I gotta say that I don't go around posting in the Critiques, because I feel enough people already do. Hence, I only post in Compositing and Maya. But seeing your work, makes me happy to see that in CGTalk there is still people who appreciate the art of traditional animation. Your designs are crisp and clean, and I hope you plan on posting your 2D animations, even if they are only in B&W.

As for Comp Anim. It is true that we use the same principles of physics/exaggeration/expressions/etc. But I heard that a lot of traditional animators have it tough when they go in because, for the first time in their animation careers, they have to deal with curves.

Anyhoo, let me just say, again, that I am happy someone is still interested in the classics, and that art doens't always have to come from software (3D App, Photoshop and other 2D Apps)

Truly wish you the very best in you career

wonderful work, the backgrounds remind me a little of my own dad's illustrations that he did in the 60's, very litho like. would love to see this whole thing in motion (please post as soon as you have some of this animated).

plouffe
04-08-2003, 05:42 AM
Oh man.. I wish i would animate this haha. But unfortunatly it wont be . These are all practice assigments for characters designs and concept art.

But now that everyone mentions it i feel SOOOOOOO tempted to animate something with some of these characters.. Ill definetly put this on the back burner for a little bit. I might just surprise you guys and do a short animated sequence with little red skipping towards the house that would be neat.

Need to learn how to composite better and read more . I've been reading the vfx and compositing forums at cgtalk lately . Ive learn soo much by just reading. Hopefully ill try some of that stuff during my summer break. see what i can come up with.

I also have to add that sometimes traditional animators have trouble handling a 3d camera, there is just so much freedom that sometimes they overdo it and the camera winds up all over the place.

Sorry bout the slightly off topic.

Awsome work!

Dbach, I disagree, I think classical animators do it less than 3d animnators, since they know its the action tharts important and they are used to doing good shots rather than moving all over. I thinkn its usually those without some sort of composition and or film training (including animation) that tend to make those mistakes. Tugui-tuqui I also disagree with the thing about curves, I use fcurves in US Animation, as well the idea of curves has been there since the early disney days. When look at the corners of animation paper cells, you can see charts, those charts were adapted by the early animators who used to draw the curve of motion and then add ticks for where they want the object on that curve to be at each frame. they then moved it over to keep it out of the way keeping the drawings cleaner, and straightened them out. granted Fcurves are a little different, they are nothing new to animation.

Congratulations on the front page, glad that worked out. this is awesome work great to see so many people enjoying classical work too.

I thiink I like the style of the first two images more than the following sketches. The sketches just look a little too "generic Disney" to me.

Awesome talent, my sincere congratulations. Some of the first pics have that warm, organic Monkey Island feel to them, which is AAA class in my book. I wish you all that luck you honestly deserve.

Nice work.

I can really appreciate the character breakdown sheets, expressions and rotation. I'm starting my first phenomes for 3D CA. I hope to do more of that type of planning.

Good Luck with your studies.

I like these sketches, just curious as to what your using, marker and white out, or is it all painted with watercolors and gouache?

plouffe
04-08-2003, 09:39 PM
Hey Kai,

That last page was done on a brown sketch book using tria grey markers, with pen , white out and india ink. haha soo ghetto because i used a ripped off peice of paper to spread the ink .. Hey whatever you have around at the time just use it. Ive even used coffee to do washes on a painting a few times.

LucentDreams
04-08-2003, 11:40 PM
for charcoal renders I'd run over to the photocopy room, grap a piece of 8 1/2 x 14, run to the washroom grab some cheap industrial paper towel for smudging and go at it. man give me somehting that marks and something to mark on and I'm happy

I was pretty close, didn't think about the ink, but figured it was marker and whiteout, awesome style.

HEy kai,

Just wondering when did you graduate from vfs??? Your style seams very flat style. YOu know like samurai jack, dexters lab power puff girl style. Was just wondering if that style is very popular where you're from. We have this one guyin my year thats from Vfs and his style is very flat as well. Maybeyou know him Paul Watlins ( not sure if thats how you spell his last name)

i have a question
i saw your earlier works
and i'm a person who'd deeply consider this course

how would you rate it
and what are others in your classes works like in comparasion.
also your illustrationly recent works did they teach you to do this or is it something you just already knew?

Bambin
04-12-2003, 04:00 PM
and you are 19? God! You're amazing!

plouffe
04-12-2003, 08:52 PM
ELmo to reply to your questions.

Teachers dont really teach you . THey guide you. They dont want to change your style or anythign soo they just teach the basics and then you do whatever you want with what you learnt. Before comming into the program i already knew how to do the illustrative work BUt going to this school has enforced my skills. You will not learn how to digitally paint backgrounds although they will teach you how to paint with gouache.

The animation program is Definetly a GREAT program.

And lastlty i cannot compare myself with other peoples work. Obviously theres always people going to be worse and or better then you at different things. Also everyone has such a different style that these people might be great artists but you do not like there style? Soo you cant really say who's best and i really cant tell you how my work looks compared to other students. you would have to see it for yourself.

Bambin - Yes im 19 years old going on to 20 in 6 months.

thanx guys
