Some nice work.

Your shading style of hatchwork kinda bothers my eyes, tho'. It's a bit too haphazard and sloppy looking, and has crossed the line from "loose" to "uncontrolled." But that's just my personal preference...

Looking forward to seeing more!

Thanks CybrGfx! I agree my hatchwork is a slop mess in which given the proper attention and time I'll be able to tighten up. Truthfully, the whole concept of contour and value linework shading is pretty new but alas I could not fool you hahaha. "Nothing a little study can't fix" right?

Here's some updates!

Some further venturing into the unknown... I think some moonlight/rock/bear studies will ensure success

Little more progress on her (it's been crazy for me). Pushed the ceiling down to bring it into this thing called "perspective"....

Need to add some highlights on that metal to bring it out more. The middle ground might get a redo to prevent the island approach and finally I need to add more veggies.

Thanks for checking it out!

hey man nice stuff :) I actually like the lose style of your cross hatching, it feels free and at the same time frenetic and chaotic.

MattVogt
10-12-2007, 07:34 AM
Thanks Ajay! Glad you enjoy my work.... as they say, "you are how you cross hatch" hahaha. I'll put it to good use and do some Ruben studies where the hatching actually helps further define form.

A quicky portrait. My gloomy face of unauthentic 9-5 gradually turned into a "oh that's right" grin.

Hello and thank you Viktoria! The trick is to plant the biggest mirror in front of your workspace. hahaha Iain McCaig's known to say that his face hurts after a full day of drawing hahaha that's hilarious!

Great work Matt :) I really dig the bridge piece. It reminds me of the Truckee river here in Reno.

Wow thanks Dan! Checked your local river out and indeed it looks exactly like the Vedder here in Chilliwack, BC hahaha. I'm glad you liked it. Now when I drive over that bridge to work, I'm reminded to hurry home to keep painting ;)

Thank you Hugh! I find it a balance between creativity in design etc and hardcore educational study. It's sometimes tough to see the profound benefits of study, but they do add up!

Starting up a new piece. 20 creatures with your eyes drawn to the bottom left one... hmmmm

Study begins:
http://mattvogt.com/post/bugs.jpg

http://mattvogt.com/post/stairWay.jpg

The creature?

The result so far:

She's pretty dark still. I'll work up the lights as I progress. There is 20 creatures, although tough to read

Any comments are warmly welcomed and thank you for swinging by!

Update for the end of day. Increased the values to pull the eyes in on the little critter plus increased the contrast of values and muddied up the cockpit area to lessen the pull:

Hey Matt, cool round of submissions :) I particularly like the sketch of the boat going up river. It looks like it could be in Vietnam or Cambodia or someplace like that. You should consider expanding on it with some color and perhaps a dark foreground object -- a rock or limb, sometihng like that. Anyhow, it's strong horizontal composition exudes a nice serenity.
