Here is my pre-vis stuff. this animation is going to be based off a 2d cartoon idea i've been working on recently. decided it would be cool to convert to 3d for this competition. still getting the idea fleshed out, but it will revolve around this skydiver and his interaction w/ an alien ship. depending on the time, i may introduce some "men in black" into the scene as well.

the original cartoons for freeFall can be seen here: www.casey33.com, this should give you an idea about the type of humor i am going for.

thanks for taking the time to check out my entry!

some modeling that i have been doing for this project. thinking i may use cloth for his jumpsuit, if i can get it to behave the way i want it to.

OH ... Very cute.
I like it.

just a concept. this pic actually gives me a bit of motion sickness!

still working out the maya cloth...hoping it works...the tests look pretty neat, but a bit out of control.

Hey casey nice work

i checked the animation on ur website looks very hilarious :)
I really like the idea
Good luck!

this was supposed to be part of the modeling milestone.

almost finished textured, lighting, etc. i'm sure i'll make a handful of tweaks. i want to add a spec. map to the helmet, still. i have a few other things i "want" to do, but we'll see how it goes w/ time.

not finished.....but this is progress on one of the inhabitants that will be in the ship that our brave skydiver will encounter.

still have some modeling to do, trying to make him look non-threatening...almost as if he could be friendly. the texture is not complete, either...have a handful of details that i want to add.

modeling with polys in maya.

more progress on the alien. i can't help but work the textures and the modeling at the same time. anyway, all polys from maya. made the skin texture in photoshop by creating a few different layers of skin to try an add some depth. a few bad seams, but that can be corrected down the road.

just a bit of an update on the alien....worked more on the texturing as well as a bit of the modeling. have his limbs almost done, as well as a face rig.

some images showing a few things.

The alien looks good, the pose of the man too.

09-28-2007, 11:00 PM
Very nice and friendly monster! Reminds me somwhat on Star Wars. Also atmosphere is very good, colours are in harmony of mad fall :). Possibly you can work a bit on the parachuter's face, it is little bit plain, flat, when compared with alien!

yeah, i agree 100% about the human's face. i was planning on adding a more detailed texture map to make it look a little better. thanks for the critique, i appreciate it.

a comparison in heights of the characters. the alien, i'm thinking, will probably be hunched over...maybe like how a gorilla would move. not sure. thinking about slapping on a cape or some kind of garment on the aliens back. we'll see.
anyway....test rendering and stuff.

working out the face weighting, rigging, etc. these are some tests.

pretty much have alien skinned and weighted. test shot of him in a pose.

Great motion in that still "free fall" image - superb!

And good luck!

been away for a while. the good news is i was on a plane and got to take some cool photos and video from above the clouds.

here is a test render of the "abduction team". they are flying on some little floor-buffer-looking things. may still tweak them a bit. the sky image is one i took from the plane.

basically the single guy will distract the skydiver while the tandem team shoots him w/ a tranquilizer dart.

something like that.

just a small update. i thought the textures were a bit too bright...at least for my taste. anyway made a few adjustments and plopped their ship in the background, too.
i should have some animation to post pretty soon. had some rig trouble, but i think i have it taken care of....at least i hope i do.

Well this will have the full power when the some motion blur clouds/environment jump into the background... for now looks good! Probably you will find the time to twak it more, add some main ship motion, and extra movements to characters... Maybe only I would smooth a little the momment when they blast against the camera...?

thanks for the crit. i appreciate it. yeah, there is still a lot of stuff i want to tweak on that playblast. it is still a work in progress for sure. hopefully there will be enough time to tweak everything.
thanks again.

10-17-2007, 09:10 PM
Huhh huhh.. time is almost gone... there is a render time very soon, and we must finish swiftly... me too, will not have time to get everything done propper... but everyone should go what one has, i guess. In my case, i am forced now to make sure that there will be no great failures... tweaking time will be very short...

Good luck!

The last animation was nice... i was wondering how you did all the optical fx

Seems you also have a lot to animate... Keep it up:thumbsup:

10-27-2007, 09:44 PM
thanks. i'm actually very close to being done. just compiling everything in post production.
not sure about what i'm going to do about the sound, though.

as for your question....i did the optical stuff in after effects. i rendered out the background light separate, applied glow, etc. the same for the flashlight. i rendered out just the basic bulb shape, applied glow, and keyed a lens flare that moves w/ it. stuff like that.

just posting an image from the animation. still working on it.
very happy about the deadline extension. i've been able to tweak a handful of things i wasn't happy with...as well as add a few things i didn't think i'd have time to do.

ok. i think i have everything pretty muched wrapped up. there may be one part of the audio i want to tweak before i upload the final animation. if i'm going to be real picky there are still a few sequences i would like to tweak....but not sure if there is enough time for that. overall, i'm pretty happy with the end result. will upload soon. can't wait to see everyone's final animations.

just thought it would be fun to show you my amazing note taking skills. somehow, out of all that jumbled mess, i was able to put together a coherent (i think) animation.
also, i scanned the original sketch of the alien. he changed a little, made him a bit more menacing, i guess.

ok. i will be uploading the final animation early evening, tomorrow. i could tweak it for another 2 weeks if time allowed....but i guess we have to let these things go sooner or later.
for now, just another screenshot.

strange behavior:
well, this is the finished entry for the strange behavior contest. i am fairly happy with the end result. very glad to have the extra 2 week extension since i entered the animation contest a bit late (mid september).

i've always been interested in the idea that there could be other life "out there" and the possibility that these lifeforms are interested in interacting with us. to me, the strangest thing that can happen in everyday normal life would be to be abducted by these creatures. so it is their behavior that is strange to me, because it is unkown. what do they want? why us? are we just dumb animals to them?
the underlying idea came from watching nature shows. i recall once seeing people in a helicopter tracking down a moose, tranquilizing him, studying him, and monitoring him with a tracking device after release. surely that animal thought he was being attacked by some alien lifeform.

i had a lot of fun with the sound editing as well. originally i wanted to make the music with propellerhead's reason, but decided that would take way too long. so indstead, i settled on using acid
pro, and a collection of royalty-free sounds, fx, loops, etc. i wanted the sound/music to be sporadic and appropriate to the situation...since this is a short animation and things happen quick, you'll notice the music changes quite a bit.

why a skydiver?
well, he originated from a 2d cartoon idea i had been messing with around the same time i decided to enter the animation contest. so i figured i might as well work from there since he was fresh in my mind.

i'm excited to have him in 3d and might make some more animation w/ him, too. the 2d freeFall cartoons can be seen at www.casey33.com/freeFall.html.

so i hope you guys enjoy my entry. i had a lot of fun working on it and can't wait for another contest to enter.
thanks to everyone who took the time to check out my thread during the days leading up to the deadline. i appreciate the feedback, critiques, support, etc.

i just want to say thanks to the handful of people who have taken the time to check out my entry. i appreciate your comments and critiques.

this contest is great. i've spent the last two days just checking out everyone's stuff. really fun to see this many completed projects in one place. there is some really amazing stuff by some of you guys and gals. i don't know what the judges are looking for, but they have some tough choices to make for sure.

i'm already excited for the next contest.

11-16-2007, 12:13 PM
wooo, this one turned out absolutely great. You nailed that "x-files on-ship atmosphere". And the point is just perfect. Like it a lot! Good luck.

I didn't really expect all those parts, and very well animated, parts you have in here...
Very nice. You are right, there's a lot to look at for the judges and really no clue what it is they are looking for.. :)

Very good indeed!!!
Like the editing as well, nice job!
Good luck!

Great work Casey, the effects at the end are slick, and the overall finish is very nice. You really brought through a menacing feeling :) Congrats & good luck.

12-04-2007, 06:22 PM
dang it....i could have sworn we were limited to 2 minutes for the animation.....

...however the subtitle for the Animation forum says 10 second to 3 minute animation.

i remeber thinking it could have been 3 minutes, then seeing somewhere else that it is only supposed to be 2 minutes.

had some other stuff that was cut due to the (i thought) 2 minute time constraint.

oh well. i guess i better investigate more next time.
