Hi,
it might be unusual to post things done with macromedia freehand around here but anyway ;)
I'm trying to translate an image which i found over at photoshopcafe to vectorgraphics.
colin smith gave me his kind permission to show this, since he's the one who created this awardwinning piece with photoshop, which i use as a referenz.
Thanks you so much for showing the respect to ask.
What you have done so far looks very good.
I am sure the forum members will be excited to review your work.

Colin

my goal is to achieve his photorealistic look by only using vectors.

so crits and comments are highly appreciated

100%freehand

thx in advance

Looks nice, but I think the focus and f-stop ring(grip) looks a bit flat - add more depeth there. The flashlight clip (hope you know what I mean :D ) looks waaaaaaaaaaay to clean - add some irrgul. there - some scratches on the surface etc.

But all over all it looks good :)

last one for today

to match the gradients from mixed paths for the final touch will be a pain i suppose
cu tomorrow, hopefully with a reply
cheers

I myself own Freehand 10 but rarely get around to using it.....too busy with MAX ;)

but this is good work.......mighty impressive

Hi!

Really nice work you have got there! Making stuff like this in photorealism with a 2D-tool, ending up with a nice 3D-impression deserves respect!

Wicked!

Maybe you should split up the focus-puller in two darker areas (top and bottom) and one lighter area in the middle, just to add some more volume to it?

As it comes to if 2D is more unpopular than 3D, i dont know... But all the magic out there sure makes people fuzzy! :hmm:

Well, anyhoo... Keep up the good work!

Peace and greets from

Nice work.
It might enhance the realism somewhat if you established a more definite lightsource and tried playing with shadows.
Try to give it more depth.

the buttons with the dead center radial gradient are a little flat.
The smaller buttos on the flash fitting look better with the off-center highlight.

I do stuff like this for a living, but in a corporate environment you don't typicaly get requests for something as refined as what you have here.

I have never used freehand
My experience is all with Corel and illustrator.
But, I have found that 2D vector applications are all pretty similiar.

are you doing this for a class?

Thank you so much for those encouraging words, guys. They are highly appreciated.

robo_obi: thank you, and i know...max is highly addictive ;)

sand of norway: yea, your right...focuspuller will be fixed in next update, thx

mmiller:good point...so far i was only trying to get the shapes right, next think will be to match all the different radial gradients as if lightened by one lightsource...a bit tricky since they are all mixtures, last step will be the shadows, which will all be mixed paths too. buttons will be fixed next time.

whitey: this is just for fun, to get familiar with vectors. I never used a vectorbased software before, found the pentool in photoshop always very tricky so i started this to become handy with pathes.

I'll see if i can show the changes today.
keep em coming
thx again

That looks nice  I used to make vectors long ago, my favourite software was something called Corel Xara, now it's XaraX.... Cheap, fast and powerful....It was fun as long as I didn't decide I wanted different point of view...

keep it up:thumbsup:

Thanks Azazel, I'm glad you like it

Here's an update:

http://www.hct-live.de/cam/camera7.jpg

What I've modified:
added softshadows to the buttons with multiple pathmixtures
added a hardly noticable shadow to the inside of the display to get a bit of depth.
modified the shadow and appearance of the big button and the switch
and last but not least made both grips completely new

what do you think...keeping in mind that everything are vectors

i didn't thought that freehand was able for this only one week ago, i'm surprised :bounce:
cheers

This is really impressive but I think it is going to be nearly imposible to get the minor imperfections that are so nessacary using vector. Also You will need to add object reflection which will also be very tough. If you can do it I will truely be amazed. It looks great so far but has a ways until photrealism

Nice camera, Troub.:) Will you be giving it some wear or are you keeping it shiny new?

Thanks m8s

Adam: You're so right....that will be a challenge, i agree nearly impossible with vectors...i'll see how much time i will put in this wornlook-challenge.

Grub:Thx, well...as i told, I#ll see if i can make it due to capability, keep your fingers crossed ;)

thx again
cheers

I'm not entirely sure that it would be a valuable exercise to try and get a "worn" look using vector tools.
texture is definitely a raster kind of thing ;)
You could define a raster image as a fill but once you start with this I would imagine you would have to do the same thing with almost all the other fill patterns to keep a consistant look.
IMHO vector graphics is just not very well suited to the task.

sort of like trying to do an oil painting with watercolors.

however, it could be educational

love the idea of this project.

nothing really to crit on my side, i will be just sitting in my corner over here watching you progress.

good stuff so far.

I'm sitting in Stimpy's camp here too :wavey:
I think this is a really cool idea for a project. You have a lot of skill's from what I can see. I'm gonna really enjoy seeing this progress.

:lightbulb Maybe I can add one suggestion shouting from our campfire here hehe.

Maybe make the shiny light bits more anisotropic and less linear. Light more often or not on such objects dances off it in mad ways.

Keep going it rocks :wip:

thx guys...
didn't had the time to work on this but will definately finish it.
thx for your encouraging words and support.

mmiller:sure vectors aren't created to achieve realizm this way but since this is only for selfeducation i'll try out how far i could come.

fraggle two: a tut? on what specific...pathmixtures?
btw: nice new avatar

Stimpy:thx m8...hope you'll enjoy it in your corner :)

PCollier:Thx...nice suggestions from the campfire.
So your in MarlboroCountry? A warm campfire, a hot cup o coffee and a good smoke, heh?

I hope i can show you an update tomorrow.

Hi,
sorry, didn't had much time the last week to finish this...
now i'm praying for big eggs so i'll finish it next week.

but since fraggle two asked for a tut i made my very first one, yeeehawww! :bounce:

it's a vid_tut on how to make the display of the camera with multiple pathmixtures in macromedia freehand. nothing special and retty easy ;)

tscc_codec is required.

grabbed the whole screen so it's 1280/768 resolution and made with a german version of freehand(sorry)

dl it here (http://www.hct-live.de/cam/display_tut_freehand.avi)

hope you'll have fun and happy easter!!!

Wow! You did this all in freehand!?
Well I would never make a painting in a vector program
but this is awesome!
Compared to the lense the grip area looks still a bit flat.
Maybe you should edit the size of the small rectangle
components a bit more to bring up the perspective. Or maybe
it looks flat because you used 2highlight areas for the lense
and only one highlight on the grip area.

Great work!
