cosmonaut 04-04-2003, 06:37 PM Modeling in Wings, rendering in povray with radiosity (for now). I know the headlights need a lot of work, anyone know of any good tutorials? Also, the rendering in povray seems pretty flat, any suggestions on how to improve it? Let me know what you think. Thanks.

I really like the first one, it looks like it has rocks for headlights!
The look you've acheived is nice and distinctinctive, I think you should work on tidying up the models but keep and experiment with the style.

Great work cosmo! Prooves that you can achieve stunning results without spending a dime on expensive software :applause:
as for the headlights I cant see why they would be that difficult to make, look at a photo of a headlight and model what you see (I know its a lot harder than it sounds) ;)
Keep up the good work.

if you didnīt use curves you should try them..but I donīt know what I could give you as advice...well there is absolutely something wrong with lights and some corners too. Try to make them smoother.

This is a very good tutorial, although its written for Maya users. You may be able to adapt it to wings. Give it a try :)

And for crits, a few things I noticed were the part of the main body around the back wheel doesn't seem circular. Also in the second picture the whole body looks as if its elevated, a little too high up in the air. It gives the illusion that the wheels aren't connected to the body.
I hope that helps some, keep up the good work!

for your povray material try using two different values in your reflection
eg.
reflection { 0.2 , 1 exponent 4 falloff 9 metallic }
is what i used for my car

Thanks for the replies guys
PaulSheffield: rocks is a good way of describing the headlights, i gotta work on those next for sure.
Martin NH: true, good work can be done for free but it sure takes a lot of time, i'm still waiting on my demo version of lightwave to see if that's the tool I want.
Killerj: any specific corners?
mindz0f1: thanks for the tutorial link, looks very helpful. You're completely right about that back wheel area, I didn't notice just how square that was, it's really apparent in the second pic (the funky one). Thanks.
robbo_145: here's the material I'm currently using:
reflection { 0.400000 exponent 0.500000 metallic 0.7 }, I'll give your material a try, thanks.

The only thing I can suggest is on the wheels themselves you might want to use a material thats not pure black. There is no clear transition from the wheel to the body of the car, it looks as if it just melts together. Also the hubcaps don't look connected to the wheel. A new material might help.
Besides that the textures for the most part are looking much better.

Thanks for the suggestions mindz0f1
Did a little tweaking in povray to try and clean things up including the tire texture and the hubcaps. Both still need a little work ... Also tried to brighten things up to give the image a little life ... I think with a little more tweaking to the materials and some actual headlights I'm going to call it good and move on.
Any other suggestions? Thanks.

are you using a sky_sphere for your bg?

just a regular ole (big) sphere with the ambient way up and no_shadow. I pretty much lifted the idea from the povray radiosity sample.

try adding "no_reflection" to your sphere so the top of your car doesn't look faded
this isn't realistic but it works well
