i really don't think there's any way of doing this without some pretty weighty scripting - i'd be interested if anyone has any ideas though... i cant think of anything quicker than just going in and selecting everything bit by bit. I'd reccommend making a quick select set too in case this happens again

Hi...
This may not be a correct way..but u can give a try..
If u have 5 shatter pieces...
1.Select the first piece.
2.change selection mode to faces.
3.Goto Select --> select using constraint.
4.Change the following option
- Constraint: nothing
-Location : Inside
-propagation:shell
5.Select the any of the outer face of the piece.
6.The outer faces get select.
7.Shift + select to inverse select.
8.The interior faces get selected.
9.Apply the interior material.
10.Click close and remember in select using constraint window.
11.Select a outer face of second piece, all the faces get selected automatically.
i am not expert in mel script so i gave a long explanation...
