View Full Version : noob: edges and smoothing, tips?
Sk0ll 04-04-2003, 06:19 PM Hi all,
I'm making a very simple part of a model, but already now I have questions that need answering before I want to move on...:)

I want to smooth the edges marked in red, but it should be impossible with that big polygons, wouldn't it ? :p
So I need to get them smaller near the edges, but what is the best way to do that? There is something called "inset", but I doubt that should be used, it's not really doing what I want. Then there's "tesselate"...is that a good idea? In my opinion my model get's messed up with it, but maybe it's the only way?
BTW: is there something opposite to tesselate ?

When you say smooth the edges, do you mean that you want to chamfer them, or that you want a meshmooth to apply properly?
A little clarification is needed.

well, both of them, I guess. I just want the edges to be smoothed nicely the best way. Chamfer is of course a good way to do it but I still have too big polygons after chamfering, so when I meshsmooth it smoothes too much, you know what I mean ?

Just chamfer it a tiny little bit.
That really should work. Also, consult the "Theoretical Sub-D" sticky thread at the top of the page.
Look here:

Let's clarify this.
You want the edges to be hard when smoothed, or soft?

Can edges be hard when smoothed ? :) :)
...or am I missing the point ? :p
Ok, I'll look at the "Theoretical Sub-D" and try to find something there. Maybe I'll post some other pictures later to clarify...
tnx for replying

I chamfered, and then meshsmoothed...it looks good now. I needed to change something in the meshsmooth options to make it look like I wanted.

Ok, wait a sec.
I'm glad it worked for you, but I have to mention that the setting you probably changed is "by smoothing group"...
While it's ok to do this, I would'nt recommend it. If you want a hard edge transition, I urge you to use the method in the link I posted.
It's mostly a workflow issue, but checking that option can bite you in the butt later...
Just some thoughts, glad I could be of some help.
Best of luck to you, and I hope to see some of your work in the forums real soon.

Thanks for the kind words =)
You're right, I used the "by smoothing group" and got my model to look good, but I guess its not a good idea...
and about that link you gave me, I didn't see it!!!:D
I never clicked it :D but I did as you said and I found it anyway on the "Theoretical Sub-D" thread, so now I know that :p (no need to worry about the model now, I wont finish it, because I have some other ideas too, and I think I learned alot making this one)
BTW, I really like this forum and that I enjoy browsing it, so I think you'll see more of me :)
