View Full Version : Free/cheap game making

I'm thinking on a game project for a while, and now that so much free and cheap stuff are avaible maybe I could do it with some friends and the help of the community. What I tought up is that we could discuss here our experiences about different packages' merits and penalties compared to each other.
Torque game engine for 100 bucks. (Tribes2, Starsiege used this):
The Nebula Device (free):
And Blender of course.
I know this, but maybe you know of something else. If so please share!I'm just sinking into these stuff, so your opinions are needed to help me and the others in the same boat made the choice.

Isn't the Blender developement team giving the Blender game engine a huge overhall? I'm waiting to see what they come up with. I have had a game project on the 3d back burner long before I ever heard of Blender. If the new Blender dynamics system is all that Ton and some other coders are saying that it is, then I can hold off for a bit. But if you know C++ and such why wait? Get it on. How many free 3d game engines are there anyway?

I've just run across one more... THE SCROLLING GAME DVELOPMENT KITT!
I'm interested in a game engine where minimal, or no programming skills are needed. Are Blender one of that kind?

yes blender is one of those programs that don't require programing knowledge. If you know programing, you can extend it's functions with python, but you can make fairly good games without python.

The skate girl game (you know what I'm talking about) has two versions. One with python programming and the other without it. Both versions are in the file you have. Python version is on the scene called 'after' and the pure version on the 'before' scene. Play both and tell us the difference :D

There is a development kit called RPG Maker (2000 and 95 versions are available for free), it is aimmed to side-scrolling games and you can achieve nice games with it. However, they will allways have a retro feelling (remember those first versions of Final Fantasy?) because the graphics output limitations: 640x480, 8 bits.
Not programming but a good understandment of the system is requiered.
Just as with blender, the final game can be turned into a stand-alone .exe file, but file sizes are usually BIG.
