Hi, I am currently working on a short that was inspired by the work done in the Harry Potter movie “The Order Of The Phoenix.” I am working in Maya 7, I am trying to recreate the Partronus charm effect. I have chosen a goat for the animal and I am currently working on the effects for it. This it were I am getting into unfamiliar territory. I am hoping with some help from the community I might be able to sail through these uncharted water a bit quicker. So thanks in advance for any help.

Ok so I made this from a few ghost shader tutorials I found. I am really starting to like the effect but there is a problem. I have a ramp attached to the transparency of a lambert making parts of it transparent like a ghost. This unfortunately enables you to see though to other geometry i.e. you can see the right hind leg through the left. So here is my question it there a way to make the goat transparent with out seeing geometry though itself?

This is an image of what it looks like from the movie to give you an idea of what im going for.

Im also working on the particle effects and if anyone has suggestions or tutorials on this kind of smoke like light trails feel free to post some links :)
Thanks for reading - Steve

One way you can make it so you dont see the hind legs inside the model is make all the polys display only 1 side, I dont have maya right in front of me but Im pretty sure its in the render settings either on the geometry or in the render globals. Its just a check box that says make one sided, or something simple like that. I only recently learned about it myself thats why I cant give you the direct location.

You turn off double sided on the objects shape node under 'Render Stats' to get single sided - that will then enable the reverse attribute if you need it :)

Also to get the trailing smoke effects im fairly sure its actually a cloth simulation - seriously cool effect indeed.

Hope that helps
