Hello everyone~ Well... just yesterday I decided to try my hand at realism. So I took to painting this lady:

I seemed to do alright with the skin, but the hair doesn't look realistic at all... I'm wondering how I could make it stand out and not look like dead strands. Any techniques? I'm not a pro by the way... this is probably my best rendering to date.

Also, what would be a practical background? And how is it best to make a foreground character fit a background? (I generally suck at choosing colors.) :p

Any help is appreciated!

Nice skintones :)

There is an issue with the shading on her right cheek, the eyes look a bit small and flat, otherwise it looks good.
About the hair, I had done a quick tutorial, maybe it can help you, you can find it here (http://fc02.deviantart.com/fs13/f/2007/035/0/5/Hair_painting_tutorial_by_Dianae.jpg)
It's the same techniques I'm using in all my paintings, I don't know if that's the kind of result you are searching for, I hope that it can help though :)

Hiya, I think your image has some very nice detail around the nose and mouth. I would expect some bunching of the cheeks if she were attempting to smile though. Perhaps some more observation of the area below the cheek bones at the level of the mouth. are you aware of the muscle movements involved in the smile. muscle movements, bunching of skin and direction of bunching have helped me with my faces. The nose and mouth are the most prominent parts of the face then the forehead then cheeks.
