This is a great challenge! I'm in!

This is what I have sofar:

First the bad things. I totally don't like the interior of the buildings.

Now the good part:
Your animation is just AWESOME. Great work. Looks fantastic.

But you can see a mask line on the front layer when it leaves the shadow part.

The building in the canyon which is in the shadows looks totally cool. Great light setup.

Can you tell us how you did the job? Is it a camera projection on polys? And GI or just a normal light setup ?

thanks for the kind words... :cool:

buildings are not final, I made them to have some reference for the lightsetup... I will make them more organic I think.

also the camera mapping isn't complete, I'll make a more detailed model. all polygons...

lighting is standard max lights and scanline. a couple of months ago I wrote a tutorial about how I light my scenes, you can find it HERE (http://www.3dluvr.com/content/article/92)

Ok, so here is an update...

I changed the buildings to be more fitting to the environment.. still have a bunch of stuff to add... more buildings, smoke and cloud elements, maybe some birds... AND fix the camera map model...

small update, some color corrections and some adjustments to the cam map model...

hmm...buddy I tried to download those avi files but there is just no way I can. I even tried Save target As, but all I get is download html file and if I click on it New window opens with file url on top but nothing hapens.

Great work..
I'm new to these type of effects..some parts of the maps (in the video) were not even in the original images..did you add someparts to therocks.. i mean when the camera moves..some parts were hidden behind others..& they were revealed by camera movements by they didn't exist in the original image i think.
anyway..that rocks & i hope you can show us a wire frame of the maxscene plzz.

Yes, that new link works. I like the camera move and scale it creates. Black holes around pillars are a bit annoying but that is WIP I think. I think alote more geometry detail is needed on the front most pillar rock. Trees around center rock are doing weird thing, soften them or something.
Maybe all around atmosphere jus a touch to bring it all a bit better together.

But all in all looks pretty good to me.

I like your buildings much better now, and I love the ship. But please, with its roll it would fly a left curve, not a right, please roll it a bit during flight.

Black holes are really strange, but the lighting is great.

Thanks for your comments guys. I'll try to fix the things mentioned, primarly the "black holes".. They are indeed very distracting...

Maybe I won't be able to finish the piece until after deadline, but it's been educative to work on.

I'm down with a bad cold right now, hopefully I'll be well enough to continue working on it tomorrow.

One more thing to add: maybe a bit smoke behind the ship? Keep working, looks very nice:thumbsup:

Ok, so I didn't manage to do much about my entry, but I'm still posting it for voting. I'll continue working on it tho ..

:shrug:

I removed the black holes in the image, but it's still in the animation, didn't have time to rerender... :hmm:

Kool. Looks like something from a movie. I'm kinda just dropping in here after a link from Zorbi. I don't follow all the challenges much. I don't know what this one is for. I assume the background is live video composite.. or did you make all of that in 3D? The first image I thought was live footage. :airguitar

I've been trying to contact you for awhile Mathias. I've sent out an email, pm, etc. Zorbi said you are really busy with a trailer. Good luck. You're going to E3 in LA this year? Wish I was going. There are several people I know going and it'd be a great way to actually meet some of you guys. I'm way on the other side of the USA in Florida. Good luck... CYA
